Susan Murphy on Zen Koans for Facing the Climate Crisis, the vast meaning of Country, and...
“A powerful and important plunge into the reality of the mind and climate.”
- Joan Halifax, author of Being with Dying and Standing at the Edge
Susan Murphy is an Australian Zen teacher whose passionate feeling of kinship with the natural world began during her early childhood years living near the Great Barrier Reef and the Gondwanaland rainforest. A successful filmmaker, radio producer, and writer, she received dharma transmission from Ross Bolleter and John Tarrant in 2001. She leads regular retreats around Australia and teaches an Australia-wide sangha that extends internationally online. She is the author of numerous books, and most recently A Fire Runs through All Things: Zen Koans for Facing the Climate Crisis, which holds the center of this conversation.
Susan and I talk about a childhood moment of awakening, the vast meaning of the word “Country” in Australia and its ringing formation in her, the punchy joy of Zen koans, and so much more.

"In Touch the Earth, Drew Jackson's poetry offers a word-weary world a new language of engagement, disruption, and insight. As with all great poetry, the words are spare, but the literary images loom large, creating indelible impressions on the reader. Like echoes that reverberate long after the first sound, the poems stay with you, they dance with your spirit. After reading the poem 'Shake the...

Breakfast with Satan is not by any stretch of the imagination, anything like having tea with Jesus.

Thank you James Finley. I noticed you said that you've forgiven your dad now. Does thst mean that he repented and repaired the deep harm he caused you?

I probably listened all of Jim Finley for the past decade, and I always check out new release on TH-cam just because I am seeking for something new. I enjoyed the sentiments and authentic questions, the host asks and dialogue which I find connection and see a different way of Jim sharing his experiences in a way I haven’t heard over the same story which is newness. I hope you understand what I am trying say.😊

I just ordered the Healing Path and am looking forward to reading it. As a pastor, psychology professor, and therapist, I would love to know how Finley would characterize his therapeutic approach? Jungian? Contemplative? Existential? All of the above?

I was raised just up the river from the Hubbards. One of our school field trips was to Payne Hollow. They were gentle people and had a quiet presence about them. After years of "life happening" I discovered Thoreau, then the Smokies ;and George Ellison connecting back to Horace Kephart (co-inspiration for the Great Smokies National Park.) As I talked with George in the magic of the forest, I asked him if he ever heard of the Hubbards and was thrilled to hear that he had communicated with them many times. All these people struck me deeply and led me to live in the mountains, cherish nature, grasp life by the tail and live deeply. Thanks for sharing this.
