Thumb Draw Archery Skills - Arrow Feather Orientation
I think what a lot of people forget is that the crossbow isn’t necessarily better than the longbow and longbow necessarily better than the crossbow. They are simply good at some things over the others. Crossbows pros are that they are easy to use, have no required limits of poundage, and don’t take much space to give mobility advantage. Cons are that they are slow to reload, expensive as hell (back in those days not now), and are much less powerful than a bow with lower draw weight due to the short draw length. A bow pros is that it is simple so not much risk of breaking and less maintenance, powerful, and fast to reload. Cons is that it takes an insane amount of time to build the muscles needed to pull back a heavier draw weight, it is fatiguing to shoot for more than a minute itself, and is less accurate. (Please note that im only talking about medieval aspects primarily. New bows and crossbows are different. Essentially a bow is more like a battlefield weapon meant to support the infantry. A crossbow is more like a siege weapon best behind covers to take down enemies. They are good in certain situations is all. This is what i understood from reading on the internet.)
Yes many of the asiatic designs are very smooth and efficient. But we still need to know draw length, pull weight, and arrow weight. Along with the exact bow and its specifications.
I notice my arrows fly a bit straighter with a slight bit of string twist
@@kevinmaughan4290 - There should be a slight be naturally with thumb draw itself
@@AlanOdinson that makes sense
So you twisted the string, consistently aimed at the balloon, and consistently hit to the right of the balloon. That tells me that if you had twisted the string and aimed to the left of the balloon, you would have hit the balloon. So that tells me that the technique was not likely meant for a stationary target in plain view. Try that again, this time put a kydex barrel or a few fiberglass bicycle flags between you and the target and see if you can shoot around the barrel and hit the balloon. Also, go review some of the videos by Lars Anderson. He shows a technique of nocking the arrow off center and getting a consistent and predictable curve in flight that can go around objects and still hit the intended target. Granted the target needs to be back away from the object you are shooting around...the arrow won't go around the corner and hit someone who is standing with their back against the tree or whatever the obstruction is. I have seen War of the Arrow once and if I remember correctly, he twisted the string during a fight in the forest. I feel that the technique does have some use in warfare but it does not offer an unlimited advantage. It may be more useful in hunting where you have a rabbit or bird moving at a predictable speed and direction. It may also be useful against targets on horseback moving at a set speed, much like a modern machine gunner will lead their target and walk their shots in until they connect.
@CharlesHuse - I can make the arrow hit where I want it to hit. That isn't the point though. The point is the ability to aim at a consistent spot and hit that point rather than attempt to "game the shot". If the arrow will not fly in a straight line after the curve, it won't go around an object to move around something to hit it. As it relates to Lars, there isn't a "consistent curve" to be had when shooting like this. What you're seeing is a highly edited video demoing the ones that work. James Jean is probably the best at this trick and has shown this to be the case in live performances.
Isn't there another method similar to this but you use the hand holding the bow to hold the arrows as well instead? I feel like that would make firing 4 arrows rapidly possible.
@LeoDragonheart13 - There is but it's a tad slower but you have better ability to transition to a secondary weapon in combat
Trying to explain this to my DM
My phone didn't display my comment. I must have mislayed it.
@@Wiseblood2012- It put the comment under another person's comment 👍
Great advice as always. Appreciate ya man.
It feels like I'm going to explode my thumb knuckle. Is that a technique problem, or does your thumb build up to it?
@@AllThingsFascinate - Technique issue. Are you shooting with a ring or thumb guard?
@@AlanOdinson Barehand. Can you recommend a thumb ring?
I really like the arrow guide method for firing short arrows from long bows.
They separate the terms , but the two ways you demonstrate here are essentially the right and wrong ways to do the pinch styled grip which really was the fastest way to return fire .

Is it possible to use one with a recurve bow and a "standard" draw? Mediterranean draw on the left side of the bow, shooting from the shelf
@@mauricioruiz9021 -No. You need the inward pressure from the thumb draw to keep it on track

Nice bow!
With my 55 lb bow shooting off the shelf using carbon shafts, I use 340 spine and a heavier head, about 200 grains, flies perfect overall weight is about 11gr per pound.
@@a-macthegeneral4705 - It's because of the heavier head that it shoots well at that spine
@@AlanOdinson yes, it’s absolutely intentional, more mass up front makes up for lower speeds with a longbow and hits harder
@@AlanOdinson my point wasn’t to critique just more to comment on that there’s different kinds of set ups that will work 😊 as always I love the content brother, and that new longshot assassin bow is pretty bad ass! Is the Mongolian bow in your other recent video one that you made? Are you going to be selling those?
Damn! Another bow I didn't know I needed!
I make my own. I am indigenous and have always used various styles of ndn bows when hunting. My favorite is an Osage recurve 65lb at 28 inches. How does this compare to Manchu and other long siyah bows?
Aweeome video, I'll be trying this.
New SHooters here. I bought my wife and I new longbows and the arrow tends to slide off the rest if any slight movement is given to the open side when holding the bow straight up and down. You explained it clear and concise. We tried what you said and no arrows are falling off now. Thank you!!!!
