Massive skill issues here. No pikes on chokepoints? No baiting axethrowers? Putting your squads in front of incoming boats? Not even putting your archers on the shore? No wonder you find this game hard. It's really not once you get to know the vikings and your units. The Holy Grail is a terrible starting item. Once you know your limits, your squads shouldn't die early game. No mentions of mines is a huge ommission. Warhammer is a top tier item for the simple reason that you can delete an entire wave with a single click. Bomb is probably the worst damage item in the game, but that's relative considering how good mines and warhammers are. Bombs are still very good. Each island is procedurally generated, every campaign. Once you unlock all the traits and starting items, you can experiment with all kinds of starting combos tailored to whatever crazy idea you have.
