Sometimes, brugmansia grow too tall and don't allow for easy pollination. The solution is shorter plants! Here's a way to get 2 plants from one, save flowers and pods in the process and create better looking plants.

    How does one determine which brug cultivars make good choices to hybridise? (I'm in Australia and grow about 40 different warm climate types)... I'm wondering is it about colour choice, or crossing singles with doubles?

    • @thegardener7721
      @thegardener7721 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to come to know each of your plants intimately. Which perform the best. Which have the best color and form. Which have stamina and are more resistant to insect pests and disease. When you identify those characteristics in some plants in your collection, use them for hybridizing new cultivars. I also use the Brugmania Growers International list of known cultivars to research plant genealogy. Its my hybridizer's Bible. Good Luck!

    If you pollinate then you will get seeds, and you can cross pollinate, that is what she is doing, Hummingbirds love Hibiscus, and will pollinate, as well. Hibiscus flowers are also used for making a drink Mexico Jamaica and you can buy the flowers dried. Very beautiful flowers, and I am researching using Hibiscus Dyes, in Eco Printing.

    Hello. Are your amaryllis' planted in the ground or are they in pots? I have 30 one-year old seedlings that need to be transplanted. I would like to plant them in the ground. Any suggestions?

    • @thegardener7721
      @thegardener7721 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what type of amaryllis you have. Some are epiphytes and enjoy living in the nook of a tree branch. Others like being crowded in pots. Still others like to be in ground in order to take advantage of changes in season. I'm in Florida, so I keep almost all of my amaryllis in pots.

    Can you please show how to collect the pollen? Also when how soon can you collect the pollen once the flower opens up?

  • @jojoohno7401
    @jojoohno7401 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok so you pollinate it to make a new color right? After that do you take a cutting and root it or collect the seeds?

    • @thegardener7721
      @thegardener7721 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the flower is successfully pollinated, you wait for the pod to mature. When the pod is fully mature, you plant the seeds. If, after a period of time, you get flowers, you can decide if the flower is worthy of keeping. Then, you can either graft it to other stock varieties, root it in the ground or a glass of water. It depends on a bit of trial and error.

    Just did this today, Took a cutting home from my mom's place, she had beautiful pink hibiscus, grabbed 3 cuttings, and left a early bud on one, and today it bloomed a half sized hibiscus, and my other red hibiscus has daily flowers and I grabbed some of the pink pollen and pollinated 3 of the red ones, and tagged them. Curious to know who those turn out! Thanks for your video and info, I think I might have to re-do two of the flowers, I know I got one in the female parts :)

    Is there a certain amount of time that pollen must be used for hibiscus, or can pollen be kept in keeping for an indefinite amount of time? I know that with corn, pollen has a short availability of time to be used before it's not longer viable.

    • @thegardener7721
      @thegardener7721 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its best to use it right away, but you can collect it on earswabs, dry it out, then enclose them in small tubes. I wouldn't let it wait too long. No more than 3 months.
