    That is a great project! I wonder if you can just use the rp2040 and the wifi chip to layout a completely self-contained PCB. i.e no pico w needed. This will make the card more compact. Pico W’s design file is open so it’s technically possible.

    • @yyzkevin416
      @yyzkevin416 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do not believe Pico W design is public is it? the pcb antenna is licensed, and also possible license issue with cyw43 binary blow. but yes this is would be ideal and I was looking at the CYW43 chip.

    • @XinmingChen
      @XinmingChen หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@yyzkevin416 Yes, the CYW43439 module is the main pain point. But I think you can use your own PCB antenna to work around the license issue (not sure if you are willing to do that, probably FCC certification headache). and they do have a free commercial-use license if you have RP2040 and CYW43439 together on your product.

    I only just heard about this... What a great idea to go with a different CD-ROM interface, that is simpler to implement. I remember having a Matsushita drive back in the day. AFAIK the Creative CD-ROM drivers didn't work at first, but you could HEX edit them or something, the details escape me. The drive was 2x, but for the target games this should be all that's required for DOS retro gaming. Maybe some later games could benefit from a faster drive, but then also many games had the option to copy most of the files to the hard drive. I dont' remember if there was a faster than 2x Panasonic drive...

    Any plans on CardBus to PCI expander? I know those exist, but impossible to buy. PCMCIA to ISA expander is also really nice to have, but I wanted to connect Voodoo card to random CardBus supporting laptops. Also in theory some laptops have video mixing capability for MPEG cards, I wonder if my ones support it and would allow Voodoo signal to be shown on laptop own screen. Good progress and good luck.

    Really cool! Never seen this type of mechanism before. My Powerbook 190 and 1400cs have spring-loaded ejectors that get triggered by a bimetallic strip, so there are just buttons next to the sockets to request an eject, or you could drag the card icon to the trash to eject a card. Overengineered solution of course, but quite nifty :D

    Wow, pretty impressive. Sound and connectivity / storage were the biggest hurdles for me with old laptops. I'm interested. I got a few old notebooks a card like yours could be very useful for. I own 2 Compaq LTE Elite 4s with DX 2 or DX 4 CPUs and some others a bit newer, up to the XP era. They have dual PC-card 16 slots. There were docks with SB's, more ports, and ISA 16 or PCI slots in them, but the are now unobtainium or cost like 500 bucks over here. Your card could fill some of the same needs. I'll fill out the form. International shipping will likely be the biggest problem for me along with customs stuff. I got refered to this video after watching Adrian Black's videos on the PICO ISA cards and he mentioned the creator of I think the PicoMem was trying to distribute his cards in Europe. If your card 'takes off' might be something you can do too. PS: saw the demo of the CD emu you did, pretty useful. I think different drive emulation similar to the PicoMEM would be incredible. Especialy if it would be possible to boot from them. I ask because the floppy and HDD drives in a lot of mine are dead or dying. then there is things you can do with the USB port, like the PicoMem with its gamepad emulation over USB. But what you have is already pretty awesome. Looking formward to more updates and if you put it on sale, I'm gonna see if I can import one.

      I do have a variation of this that would fit into a Type I slot, and I have talked to a few people about it. Basically for devices that did not support i/o mode if it is not possible to enable, it is still possible to communicate through emulated memory, i.e. we could make a memory mapped packet driver so mtcp etc could be used on these devices as well. I do not currently have a Poqet to test.

    It's way better then Panasonic KXL-D745 (which is a sound/scsi cdrom card combo). Combination of CD (with audio), audio card and ne2000 and serial port/modem (fax modem? ppp? slip?) is a killer feature. If it will be capable of emulating both ata/ide and linear flash for storage options in addition to cdrom support it will be close to ultimate pcmcia device. What would be left out is audio in (which was rarely used), parallel port emulation (which there is little point to emulate unless a physical connector will be present to connect, say, link cables or printers), scsi adapter emulation (same as parallel port, physical bus connection for peripherals is an overkill here. there were parallel port to scsi adapters anyway). As for other obscure pcmcia devices like video cards and mpeg accelerators - they didn't work in dos AFAIR, and even under window 3.1. Never seen anything doing zoomed video "direct to framebuffer" in real life.
