Crashed Futures: A Sociological Investigation into the Failure of Cardamom Futures Market
Crashed Futures: A Sociological Investigation into the Failure of Cardamom Futures Market | Tony Kurien | FAS YSOSS 2024-25
The third seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series 2024-25 was presented by Tony Kurian, Assistant professor, Azim Premji University, Bangalore on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 4 PM IST.
Tony’s study delves into the reasons behind the unsuccessful launch and subsequent closure of the cardamom futures market. Despite being a globally traded spice with moderate price volatility, cardamom failed to establish a viable futures market. The primary factors contributing to this outcome are examined, focusing on the unique characteristics of cardamom as a commodity and the political dynamics influencing its market. This study uses mixed research methodology and places itself in the interstices of political economy and economic sociology.
The discussant for this session was Dr. Sumalatha B.S., Assistant Professor, Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation (GIFT), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The series is chaired by Barbara Harriss-White, Emeritus Professor of Development Studies, University of Oxford.

Wonderful discussion, thank you! 🙏 No wonder, feku won't release data, and when it is released would tinker with it!! What else does one expect from a feku?!! No wonder, while China with a similar population pulls ahead with a per capita income 5 times that of India, while we try to tinker with our data & manage the media but NOT our governance or manage our economy! #feku India has the potential to grow much much faster, with better governance! 👍

Prof. Ramkumar gets it correct. Nobody has claimed that there is no poverty in India. Poverty itself is an arbitrary subject. What surjit bhalla & karan bhasin et. all have cliamed in their papaer now accepted by IMF is that poverty as measured as per world bank definition of 1.99$ PPP is less than 2% . This poverty line definition is important because, this is close to the line on which 2011-12 URP,MMRP data is available. This might not be the best comparision, but we have to go with the data at hand & based on this bhalla & bhasin have showed that it has reduced from 21% to 2% in the years 2011 to 2023

Utility maximization as singular objective of labour movements from farm to non-farm is not a sound proposition.

Nature of employment itself is changing as..... Large portions of workers on casual or irregular employment rather than regular and stable employment is one the evidence. This so called structural transformation are not qualitative but just quantitative fluctuations..?

  • @NileshKumar-ek6rm

Concept of wage rate is problematic ... Construction sector as driver of Rural Non-farm has not offered a stable alternative to farm employment. Larger sector of Rural Labour Force has not seen any transformation in the quality of employment.
