Dump Trailers are out through some tough conditions. Occasionally things break. It’s best if you can fix it yourself, but make sure to do it right.
My first attempt was an effort to have as few welds/breaking points as possible and for the welds that had to be there to be more than the original equipment.
The original equipment had a single flat piece of steel welded on to the front of two arms. Each side had a single weld. Over time, and probably an impact or two, the welds crack, leaving your spare tire vulnerable to falling off. Not good!
The first iteration, I heated a piece of 3/16 steel and tried to bend it into shape without any cuts or welds. But, In order to have the wheel completely vertical, I had to cut and weld. So I had a significant overlap instead of a but joint. However, without full-blown blacksmith tools, I was unable to get the front straight enough for the bolts to fit the wheel.
Plan B was to use a similar method to the original but with much more support. Instead of a flat piece I use angle iron. To support it, I welded a bracket inside both arms. So instead of a single vertical weld on a flat piece there are 3 welds holding the angle iron.
To reattach the arms, I added a patch the overlaps the weld, so instead of 1 welds holding, there are 4.
That’s not going anywhere.
