RIAT 2024 Departures Day Highlights (including U-2 arrival!) #riat2024 #airshow2024 #airtattoo
Departures from the Royal International Air Tattoo 2024, RIAT 2024, filmed on Monday 22nd July 2024, held at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, UK
Something a little different, but plenty of references and inspiration for future builds.
And not only were there the departures of the aircraft on display at the show, but I also just managed to catch a glimpse of a U-2 spy-plane land following real-life operations.
As well as filming a few highlights, I also tried to take a higher resolution photographs of as many aircraft as I could - both on the Static Displays (over the weekend) as well as whilst waiting for clearance to depart. As there were a lot more photos (about 800...) it will take a little longer to edit those down - especially as they all need a bit of tweaking to make them look their best!
I will be be back again next year!

    • @RobsModels

      In theory, possibly yes… But they would need a plenty of mixing with a suitable thinner. If you’ve got an airbrush I’d recommend using paints and not risk these clogging it up!

    The cockpit has a molded on wiper which is ridiculous! It can be taken off carefully but it was totally unnecessary. They also provided decals for the cockpit frame. Also useless as they would only adhere to the inside or outside of the frame, leaving the other side clear! I suggest masking and dual painting (inside color and outside.

    Ooh, you cheater. A true beginner uses a Stanley knife or a penknife and doesn't sand anything. 😉 I hadn't realized that the kits in the "starter sets" are simplified, although it does sort of make sense now. I guess Airfix don't want to put off beginners by going overboard with the "fiddlys". One pedantic detail (if you're interested): The narrow cable on the side at 1:37:06 was actually used for removing and replacing tracks (a constant chore for Tiger crews. Each track weighted nearly 3 tons). They'd attach one end to the drive sprocket, fix the other end to the end of the track then rev up the engine and get the cable to "pull" the heavy track back over the top of the road wheels.

    • @RobsModels
      @RobsModels 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did consider using the "wobble" method to remove the parts from the sprue, but couldn't bring myself to do it! ;-) I couldn't find my cheap retractable craft knife so I allowed myself the compromise. As a kid I'd 'borrow' one of my mum's emery boards, but these nail blocks worked a treat and have three grits and a polishing side in one. And they're cheap. I must admit that though the individual wheels and link & length track would be fiddly for younger modelers, I'm sure they wouldn't have too much of an issue attaching the spare track pieces to the turret, the tow ropes and eyelets. However, they did require pre-drilling the holes and of course it saves Airfix a sprue of plastic. Crucially from Airfix's point of view they can keep the more detailed one in their range, with the Starter Kit being a more simplified overing. Having now completed the model (video soon!) the Starter Kit Tiger 1 does look a little sparse when compared to it's more detailed brother. I'll admit I thought it odd having the additional cable on the side but admit I didn't give it much thought, but as soon as I read your comment it seems so obvious!!!

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. I also have the Spitfire after hearing great things about it - but did an unboxing was a little disappointed that it didn't seem to have similar features to the 109 kit (such as posable control surfaces, and of course the ability to switch between having the engine displayed or closed up). However, many claim the 1/48 Spitfire is one of Tamiya's best ever models, so I guess the proof will be in the building. Hope your build goes well!

      It's a shame that this kit is based on the test Saturn V of the mid 60's. It's full of little mistakes and assumptions. Fortunately with some research you can use it as a basis to create something more accurate - if you have the patience and dedication! I had hoped that a company would release a newly tooled (and correct!) version for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, but with people still buying this old kit I guess they don't want to waste their money.

    • @RobsModels
      @RobsModels 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Off the top of my head: I'm not too sure! The kit in the box (and hence paint and decals) is based on the test Saturn V, and was in production long before man was landing on the moon. It appears that each Apollo mission had little variations. It doesn't help that quite a few books and documentaries use 'stock' footage and videos, so the pictures may be of a different Apollo mission. I found an official NASA website which had pictures of the various missions, so tried to piece together my painting and decals to create the Apollo 11 scheme - and made sure I only used images and footage when I knew for sure that it was Apollo 11, and not another mission. Saying that, it was piecing together a jigsaw of different pictures from different angles, so I may be wrong.

I’ll just build it as a one piece rocket, which is all you really need and give it a light weathering..... ....anyhow, thanks for pushing my hand, I’ll look forward to building it in the new year. It you were to have it next to a 1/32 scale model I think the difference in scale would be too large. However, if you were to create a diorama and use forced perspective using a 1/24 model in the foreground with 1/32 scale models in the background (so objects that are closer to the viewer appear bigger) it might work.

    I cannot believe how badly Airfix messed up the tracks on these kits. The Tiger used only one shape of track link. It was the same on both sides of the tank. This was to simplify maintenance, spare part supply etc. So, the fine detailing on the tracks would point forward at one side of the tank, and backward at the other. But airfix have MIRRORED their track parts, making TWO kinds of track. And yes, I'm talking about the more detailed "link and length" parts which are supposedly the better ones.

      This kit didn't have a price because it was given to people who were members of the Airfix Model Club in 2022 - though as it costs money to be a member I guess you do pay for it indirectly! Being a member does mean you get a 10% discount off online orders, and a couple of weekends a year that can be increased to 20%. Therefore, if there's a couple of kits you have your eye and don't mind waiting for the next offer you can pick them up cheaper than on Amazon, etc. Saying all that, the hobby is getting a lot more expensive with kit prices going up for all brands. And don't even get me started on the cost of paint...!!!

    The best primer for a secure base coat is a Lacquer and then paint your acrylic over it.....................

      What’s your preferred primer? I tend to use different primers for different builds. More of what one I feel like at the time! 🤣

    I've gone with the Allclad2 paint. I got fed up with the acrylics.

      Agreed! Coincidentally I spent my Sunday afternoon working out what acrylic paints I need to replace. Using acrylics just seems to be a constant battle.

      I find the black Allclad2 base makes a good undercoat for polished aluminium, but it it gets a bit too chrome like and probably an acrylic varnish in places to dull down the aluminium. The black base has to be sprayed wet, or it doesn't dry high gloss, the down side is that it can fill the fine detail. I sprayed it directly over the acrylic mistakes, which has added even more filler. This has been a learning curve for me, I have a 1/48 Airfix Mustang with multiple Eduard parts and don't need too many mistakes there.

      @Rob's Models Have you tried Humbrol acrylic polished aluminium? It's easier than Allclad2 but not quite as effective.

    Are you clamping the parts together and then gluing with extra thin cement instead of applying glue and then fitting together?

    • @RobsModels
      @RobsModels ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the parts are held together in the correct position without any glue - then a little is put on the join. The Extra Thin glue will then seep between the parts, gently melt the plastic, which sticks the parts together when the solvent dries. Effectively it's wielding the plastic parts together. On larger jobs (such as two halves of fuselage) I may put a little glue (such as the Revell Contacta) on the internal joint parts such as the location pin holes. This gives the plastic an immediate grip to hold it together whilst the Extra Thin is applied. This mean it has a stronger internal bond, but without glue splurging out the sides. Hope that helps.

    You definitely need an editor. Took 30 minutes to describe a process that could have been covered in 5 minutes.
