Daves TR4A 2024 Final Solid State Overdrive Control Design Changes
We found one bug in the previous circuit design that has been fixed. The design function is really solid now and I am looking forward to getting these out to my beta testers. I should be ready for production in the early spring assuming my testers are blessed with weather good enough to get out in their cars!
I will be offering my control for sale in the early spring of 2025. If you are interested in purchasing one please send an email to me at dconnitt@gmail.com with "Overdrive Control" in subject line. Projected cost will be in the $130.00- $145.00 range.
The control will work with a standard Triumph overdrive switch if you operate in as a "momentary" style switch. That is you would flip it on and off to engage or disengage the overdrive.
If you have any questions about my solid state overdrive control, please leave them in the comments below.
Thanks!
Dave Connitt

    Hi Dave, This might be a stupid question but what is this unit actually controlling? Does it replace some sort of 50 year old wired controller that is currently in the overdrive unit? If so, how does one replace the controller it has now and you replace it with this? Just yesterday, I was looking at examples of guys who have added an overdrive switch to the top or side of the shifting knob. Would this controller make that sort of modification any easier? I’m always interested in your TR6 upgrades. 👍

    • @DavesTR4A
      @DavesTR4A 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not a stupid question Dave. The stock overdrive electrical circuit is designed so it’s either “ON” whenever the switch on the steering column is “ON” (down) and one of the transmission interrupt switches is closed. So if you leave the steering column switch “ON” and go through the gears, every time you go to 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear the overdrive kicks in. That’s aggravating by itself but my biggest aggravation is driving along in overdrive and I have to stop like coming off a freeway. I forget to switch off the overdrive as I stop and when I get to 2nd gear again the overdrive kicks in . My overdrive control automatically turns off the overdrive every time you shift through neutral. If you want to shift into overdrive you must flip the overdrive switch on and off once. If you install a shift knob with a momentary push button it’s even easier to operate. Jeremy Chin is working on a custom shift knob with a momentary switch and a Triumph logo medallion on the top. I have a picture of it somewhere.

    So if I understand this correctly, this will save my transmission overdrive by shutting it off when I go to thru neutral to perhaps shift into reverse which would otherwise damage the OD, correct?

    Great video Dave! You did a perfect job of following the line, it made for a true feeling of the course in your car. I was the #1 car in group 2 and you can see me in the video waiting for your group to head out. I saw and heard you come through on lap1, you were well cooking well over 55 and sounded great! I had a bit of a different approach and car #1 coming out onto the track than Chris did in your group. Chris followed the pace car much closer than I did initially, I gave him some space and it gave me and the others behind me more open road to run. I probably never go closer than your spacing to the pace car and hoped the guys behind me could also stretch out although I seldom saw anyone in my mirrors. I followed the same racing line and loved the ride, something about running upper rev's in 3rd and 4th that was very satisfying. I did get to see what Jolene could do pedal to the floor on the final straight away, yeah, well over 55 mph. The experience was only eclipsed by the friendships made, I enjoyed our time together Dave and hope to see you again my friend!

    This is very interesting Dave and I do have a J-type overdrive in the OrangePeelr. I hope to find you at British Car Day and talk about this new controller. My column switch was acting up the other day so this digital unit might be arriving just in time. I think this unit, installed into your TR4A, and you’re at British Car Day would be an incredible opportunity to share your story and see it working. I know that means a little pressure to finalize it l, install it, and then do the TRials. That might be a little much, but if it worked out, that would be an incredible testament to this new product. See you at BCD regardless! 👍

    I had to laugh at that pile of luggage! When I was in college, one snowy January evening I drove my TR4 from Boulder CO to the Denver airport to pick up my girlfriend, who was returning from a month-long holiday break between semesters. I had no idea how much luggage she had brought! Fit what I could in the boot, strapped more on the rack... but still had to put the top down to fit the last two or three bags! It was January, it was night, it was cold, it was snowing a little, there were a couple inches of the white stuff on the roads, and we had a 30 mile topless drive home! But we were young and fearless! We survived!

  • @alanm.4298
    @alanm.4298 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    One TH-cam certified mechanic calls the pinch bolts that retain the joint on the steering shaft the "bolts of death"... if left out or not properly tightened! 🙄 (He's not talking about Triumphs, either... most cars have at least one.) Over time the all metal, TR6 style joints will wear and get sloppy... occasionally need replacement. Of course the rubber ones harden with age and eventually need replacement, too. Latet TR4, TR4A and subsequent models mount the steering rack in rubber, so there won't be a whole lot of additional road vibration felt through the steering. The early TR4 had a solidly mounted steering rack, so at least one of the rubber "donuts" is a good idea. I can't tell from the images, but would hope the nuts on those pinch bolts are the locking type. The stronger all-metal locking nuts would be ideal (instead of Nylock).

  • @hollywoodd3191
    @hollywoodd3191 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I never trusted that rubber joint on my TR6. One of the English suppliers sells a solid shaft with u-joints at both ends. I replaced mine with that. Like you, I didn’t notice any extra harshness in the wheel after replacing.

  • @dlyrag755
    @dlyrag755 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You are so lucky having this happen when it did. I'll have to check my joint tomorrow. Funny you didn't feel any play in the steering before it failed.

    • @DavesTR4A
      @DavesTR4A 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It wasn’t an instantaneous failure and you are absolutely correct as it failed at a point where there was very minimal impact on my safety.

  • @TR4Ajim
    @TR4Ajim 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Dave the clamps that hold the rubber joints are notoriously poor. They have a design flaw. The point where the bolts go in cannot exert enough clamping pressure. There is a fix by cutting a deeper slot for the bolts to clamp on. The UK Triumph Registry forum has several topics on this. I also fitted a TR6 universal joint to the lower shaft, but kept the rubber donut on the top (after doing the modification to the clamp.

    • @DavesTR4A
      @DavesTR4A 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why not replace the upper rubber joint? I have put about 30 miles on the car since I replaced both rubber joints and I honestly can’t feel any negative effect. I was only able to buy 1 “new” TR6 steering universal joint and that one is on the rack end, The other joint is a used one but it seems pretty tight. So far, so good.

    • @TR4Ajim
      @TR4Ajim 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DavesTR4A I had replaced both rubber couplers before I found out about modifying the clamps. So they were in good condition. Then I decided to pull them both to modify the clamps. However that lower one always bothered me because it barely cleared the lower radiator pipe (not an issue on RHD cars). So I decided to swap that one for a TR6 coupler, and now there’s plenty of room. With the clamps on the upper rubber one already “fixed”, I decided to put it back in. As long as the rubber couplers are in good condition, they’ll be fine. But it’s the poor design of their clamps that is the real safety issue. So yeah, replacing both with TR6 ones, is easier than modding the stock ones.

    • @alanm.4298
      @alanm.4298 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The "design flaw" must be a shortcoming of the replacement parts. I had original OEM "rubber donuts" in my TR4 for many years with no problem keeping them clamped tight. (I've owned the car since 1977.) It will be getting new donuts (or one donut, one TR6 joint) during the current restoration, so maybe I will be able to compare. Thanks! It's good to know to watch out for this possible issue!

    Good thing I am not close to Cincinnati to drive on this tour. Because I am in the process of breaking in the restoration of my TR4 with a Judson supercharger. So far about 250 miles into the break in period, the car stalled out and I was NOT out of gas. So I sat alongside the road for about an hour and could not get it started . Called a towing service and got it back home! The next day the car started up and I managed to go about 50 feet and the car stalled again!! So I suspect something is causing the Holly carburetor to fail or flood. So if I was on this tour, your group would have had a mechanical failure! The tour was a great drive and I yearn for the day to successfully finish one with this car. Thanks for the video. Is is very entertaining.
