Bows (Guitar Playthrough) | Beautiful: The Carole King Musical [PIT CAM]
Recorded at The Lawrence Batley Theatre, Oct 24 for Longwood AOS’ production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
I was playing guitar 1 part for this show
Guitar is a Schecter Nick Johnston Trad Strat running through a Line 6 Helix LT into a QSC CP8 Monitor.
Audio is a blend of di from the Helix and the microphone on Zoom Q8n camera. This explains my guitar being significantly louder, this was not the FoH mix!

Woah!! I did this show a few years back and it's amazing to see a pit view, as I was on stage!! Loving the work and dedication.
Very fun show, I've done it twice now and will be doing it again late next year.
Was a lot of fun
sounds great !
Thank you!
Good stuff man! Is it possible to find the proper sheet music for the bass parts at all? Can find plenty of piano and vocal stuff 😂
@MrJoewill92 send me an email at thepitbandguitarist@gmail.com and I'll help if I can
Pit cams are SO precious. Thank you for posting this, really cool !
This looks so fun to play
It certainly is. Always looked forward to this one!
This is great- thank you. I’m playing this in November and unsure what guitar to use. I normally use a PRS silver sky for pit work, I was unsure whether to use my semi hollow for this one for a more jazzy tone or whether it will cut through the mix well enough. After watching this I might take the silver sky!
It was an enjoyable guitar score to play :) Yes, I'd use the silver Sky as I'd say there's not actually that much jazz in this show other than this number really, and you can always get away with playing Jazz on a strat 😏This is my channel dedicated to pit band guitar videos, so check out my other videos for more from this show and others too, I use a variety of guitars! I'll also be uploading more videos from Sister Act, Priscilla Queen of The Desert & Made In Dagenham soon.
This is really good!
@@Makememesandmore thank you!
I like the reason I came here was because my school is doing this show lol
@@Makememesandmore it's great fun! I've played it twice now.
@@ThePitBandGuitarist Cool! :) I play piano, so I'm no good at guitar
No comments yet? I think that was so cool 🤩 (I also love school of rock)
Thanks!
Hey, Do you happen to have videos of all of the other songs you played?
All of the videos I have from "School of Rock The Musical" are on this channel. I have others from other musicals which will be uploaded soon
Do you tell anywhere what amp or amps you used and effect selection, just setup. Strings and neck relief, ht of srings to pickups etc. Not many people share this info but I'd love to know. I use to build custom guitars, but I'm always wanting to know the guitar setups. I have a number if guitars and always like to try something different as far as setups of complete guitar. Are the pickups stock from PRS or your own. What are some of your favorite or most widely used amps? Strings and picks. Etcetera. I just love your awesome ckean tone with just the right amount of grit for what your doing. Do you do studio work also? Sorry for all the questions. What was and is your background of training? Sorry just noticed yiu put in about the guitar but setup could you give some specs on that. Line 6 helix. I haven't heard of it but I haven't bought any new gear in sometime. I have the line 6 amp and the 1st POD that came out. I have quite a few 1st out gear lol. Orig Walkman which I used with Orig Rockman, 1st Zoom floor effects, first Zoom that came out with a kittle speaker built into it that you could close and just use effects open and use built in speaker. Zoom 7010 I think. I have a amp with a speaker built into a cigarette box, you plug it into a 4x12 cab and IT cranks. JUST input and output a collectors item. Lol There's a lot of equipment that I'm sure I'd like and if I went iut and looked I buy mire than I need as I have now. I'd like to sell a lot of what I have rack gear and all and go back to the bare minimum pedals. I have some gear that I bought years ago and it's never been plugged in, only taken out of the box and looked at. I bought gear to setup a nice over the board home studio, but was in a auto accident and became disabled. So it sits. I had a rackmount computer made that has never been used and would need a new motherboard. Everything I own looks brand new even the gear I do use is in excellent condition. I have an acoustic that is 47yrs old and it in excellent condition only 900 in the world when I bought it. I tried a row of them could have bought one that was in the lower 200 but I bought 727th guitar made. Inky because iut if all I played it sounded the best. Has book matched back and sides of burled Mahogany, cedar top very straight grain , mah neck with ebony fretboard. It a Alvarez Yari DY50. It wasn't made at the factory. It was made a Yari's small guitar studio where 20 worker and himself build customs guitars and one offs. I have papers in it and papers to sign it over to person, if I decide to sell it. I also have a classical that I had built in Spain. Took 6yrs to get it. I paid so much down to get it started then while I was touring in Europe I went and picked it up. That was almost 40 years ago. I paid $6000.00 then wonder what it would cost now. He only built so many a year. He was so back logged when I ordered mine. I had played one from a classical professor who also performed and recorded.
D Are the leads written or do you get to adlib, or both?
A bit of both in this particular show. The guitar solo in this number isn't written so the guitarist has free reign!
How do you know what effects to use or what they may want. Is their practice play though where ideas for tones are suggested?
It usually gives you an indication in the score such as "distortion & delay" or "phaser" etc. It rarely indicates specific models of FX so it's down to the guitarist to use what the deem is appropriate gear to achieve the correct sound
Enjoyed watching and listening to this. So smooth , I can't imagine playing and counting until you play your next passage of notes and chords. Counting and reading music seemed so difficult for me. If I would have had a good guitar and or piano instructor when I first began learning, I believe it would have been so much easier, since I would have been learning dexterity using the instrument at the same time learning theory and applying both together. Now that I've been playing for many years learning by ear , I never use tabulature wasn't around when I started, it slows me down plus you need to count also. I learn faster by listening. I can hear something and know where it's played on the neck. I taught myself lead guitar first, when I should have learned or been taught rhythm since 90 to 95% of songs is rhythm. But that also depends on type of music being played. I'd like to know more of your back ground. Where can I find the information. I know you work with Rick. He a wonderful instructor loves teaching. I love the fact of he goes about teaching, he's serious yet light hearted and funny. He's a type of instructor who people of all ages can learn from, and if he teaches something that you don't understand he'll find another way for us to understand.
When you keep reading music & playing while reading music you end up getting to the stage where you don't feel like you're counting. You can almost hear the rhythms in your head as you read them on the page. Same goes for TAB if the tab has rhythms included!
Thanks for posting this!! Working up the musical here on the west coast and its nice to see where you are positioning the riffs. Cheers!!
That's cool. Whereabout are/did your production take place? I've done it twice now for local groups, great fun!
I like the tone of your guitar along with watching you play. Your touch is so light, both hands. Effortless. How many times have you practice to le as an your part, and then rehearse?
@@ThePitBandGuitaristyou a extreme low action light player like me?
@@DrAdams-fx6gy For amateur shows such as these, the usual structure is you just have one session called a "band call" where the band meet for the first time and play through the whole show with the cast members singing along. Then there's tech rehearsal, dress rehearsal and then the shows each evening & a saturday matinee for about 4-5 days
@@joethrelfall6370 Yes, I suffer from DeQuervain's Tenosynivitus in my left hand so I need low action and low gauge strings. I use Daddario's 9-42 strings
are there tabs for this anywehre?
The band parts for musical theatre scores are always written in standard notation so I don't think it'll be easy to find TABs unfortunately!
Stick it to da man!
I’m intrigued by the bare wood nature of the PRS you’re playing… did you strip the paint off? Cheers
Hi, It's a PRS SE Tremonti Custom Spalted Maple Limited Edition so the bare wood look is actually called 'spalted maple'. It looks lovely and every single guitar PRS made with that wood has a slightly different grain/look. It plays very nicely and has a great neck profile :)
@@ThePitBandGuitarist Tanks very much for that, it’s a truly lovely guitar. I don’t like the bling of many PRS, in fact I’ve got a S2 Vela in satin nitro which also has got a woody quality. Take good care
