Bali Jatra, a major festival celebrated in Cuttack, Odisha, is one of Asia's largest open trade fairs. Held on Kartika Purnima and lasting for seven days or more, usually until Prathamastami, it marks the ancient maritime traditions of the Sadhabas (Odia mariners). The festival takes place at Gadagadia Ghata, along the Mahanadi River, and commemorates the day when these sailors would set off on voyages to distant lands like Bali, Java, Sumatra, Borneo (all in Indonesia), and Sri Lanka for trade and cultural exchange.
Bali Jatra is a testament to Odisha's rich maritime heritage, with the Sadhabas traditionally beginning their voyages on Kartika Purnima, taking advantage of the favorable winds at that time. The festival is also linked to the Ta'apoi tradition, where young women wait for the return of their sailor brothers.
The event is filled with a variety of attractions for children, such as toy stalls, giant wheels, games, the "Maut ka Kuan" (well of death), and food stalls offering Odia specialties like Cuttack Dahibara Aludum, Thunka Puri, Kulfi, Gupchup, Mathura Cake, and Banarasi Paan, among others. Additionally, there are numerous cultural performances throughout the festival. Every year, millions of visitors from around the world come to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Bali Jatra.
This year was no different, with several celebrities, including the legendary Sonu Nigam, performing live. Witnessing his performance was truly unforgettable.
