Backcountry ski touring and camping adventures high up in the mountains in wild places.
Took the Ski's Hiking and Wild Camping Up a Mountain
Sprinter? It's weird this winter in the backcountry. I have never seen such a minimal amount of snow and such warm temperatures. Regardless, I was able to find snow and a nice view in the calm alpine.
It was a good time to take the ski's and tent and head up high into the mountains.
Join me on this (spring/winter?) camping adventure, share some laughs, enjoy the scenery, and please leave any tips or questions/comments in the comments section. I also share some tips along the way about winter camping and backpacking.

Merry Christmas! Thanks for watching/commenting and wish you all the best for 2025!
love the videos ans a question is what is the condensation like on the remore 2 as i looking at the remote 3 but heard condersation is bad on the in side with a lack of venting
@nikonlover6602 Thanks for watching, commenting and your question! We are very satisfied with the MSR Remote 2, no major problems with condensation yet. Can expect some condensation in any 4 season tent from my experience to date. Just the nature of winter camping when sheltering/sleeping inside tent with body heat/exhaling warm air inside of tent, creates some condensation. But for us it’s important to have tent that can endure rain, snow loading, wind, provide space for 1-2 with gear, etc. The vents situated high and low, which is important for proper airflow, they work well reducing condensation. Plus the two entry/exit points with vestibules allow for ease of movement and positive airflow as well. Sturdy for snow loading, highly visible colour plus reflective points, numerous guy-out points, spacious, snow flaps that can be pinned/buried to help seal & keep spindrifts/cold air out. Haven’t tested in strong winds yet. Footprint of the MSR Remote 2 is bigger than our last MSR 4 season tent, but that’s due to MSR Remote 2 having 2 vestibules which we really appreciate. So yes, so far very satisfied with the MSR Remote 2. And MSR has excellent customer service/warranty/repair services from our experience. Thanks for your question/comment, wish you a Merry Christmas, happy 2025 & all the best in the gear hunt, and on your adventures!

@muamertkapetanovic7940 Thanks for watching and leaving the kind emoji comment! Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025!🎄🏔️⛺️⛷️❄️
Great videos. I am going to try winter camping this year with snowshoes and sled - maybe Hector Lake to start. I actually linked to your site based on your MSR Remote 2 review. I am going to buy the MSR Remote 3 for 2 people. My question - I have demo disco 15f and Corus 20f Quilt and R3.4 pad. I live in Banff area and it gets to -35f. I don't want to spend lots and change my mind. What's your strategy for warm enough sleeping bags? What is your sleeping bag? At what temperature do you cancel? I think I need to upgrade to R7 pad? I really like your SOL reflector pad to keep warm while getting ready.
Thanks for watching/commenting/question. My wife bought me the Western Mountaineering ‘Versalite’ few years back, 2 lbs total weight, rated to -12c, 850+ fill power goose down, packs small. They do sell bags rated for colder temps. I pack 2 inflatable sleep pads to get off the snow/insulate. Might purchase one thick winter rated sleep pad eventually. I also pack enough clothing as always try to remain warm & dry. And the warm water bottle in sleeping bag trick overnight helps. Lots of tea to stay warm, and always extra food just in case, weather checks pre-departure to pick best days, trip plan & ETA left with someone, avalanche training, satellite device for regular and emergency communication. I also really try avoiding sweating, this leads to chilling off rapidly…to point it can be very dangerous. Down booties for camp I enjoy for comfort/warmth/sleeping to keep feet warm, but I’m mindful with where I use them as very slippery, so I don’t use them if in exposed terrain/hazardous conditions to walk around camp site. Regarding when too cold and to cancel…that’s up to personal preference/experience/location/gear/conditions/forecast/etc. Everyone has different ideas of ‘fun’/comfort/experience/locations/conditions, etc. I started out slowly in backyard as a kid, then backpacking overnight trips spring to fall, then eventually with experienced friends mountaineering/winter camping etc. Winter and even other seasons, leads to many people getting lost, injured, or even perishing/going missing, things can turn quickly especially in the cold. Issue I could see with sled travel/winter camping, is if get way way back in the remote backcountry with the fast sleds these days, and something happens, (injury/broken down sled/tree falls on top of someone, avalanche, rockfall, wildlife attack, etc), could get hairy. SAR teams/helicopters are often unable to be dispatched if weather is not conducive to flight or no trip plan left with someone. Hope that helps.
Very cool! Looking also for a 4 season tent and the Remote 2 is one of my choices. Are you satisfied so far? Trouble with condensation?

How you solve wet clothing( thrrmo Tshirt etc), did you dry it somehow?
I was taught very early in life by mountain folk to try to avoid sweating too much when in the mountains. I pace myself, wear many layers so can delayer and layer back up again as necessary. Merino wool base layers are great as they breathe very well, keep one warm, lightweight, and don’t collect smell as much as synthetics, even after several days in the backcountry, if one has been careful to not sweat too much. I also take extra pairs of socks, clothing, many pairs of gloves etc, and air everything out (eg. remove soles from boots) and place items in the sun and wind any chance I get. In the tent a trick is tuck the next days clothing in your sleeping bag and your body heat warms it up nicely, hang items up to dry outside or inside tent in summer, in winter tuck in sleeping bag and body heat will help to at least keep clothing from freezing if a bit damp. Sometimes you may be able to build a fire and dry clothing/footwear but be careful to not place things too close and always ensure legal to build fire in current location, no fire ban (wildfire season restrictions) and only build one when necessary and use dead wood, as wildlife depends on healthy trees/lichen etc. Be sure to put it out properly too and clean up camp/trail. Sometimes you may just have to be a bit cold initially when donning clothing or footwear if it’s cold and/or damp in the morning, but body heat when start moving will warm things up. A warm tea or coffee does wonders too. Tuck insulated hot water bottle in sleeping bag overnight. And good waterproof/breathable shells for upper and lower body (wear accordingly, I use very little when hiking or skinning up mountains as will sweat if too bundled up) that protect from weather at camp with proper base layers, toque, buffs, goggles, gloves, good sleeping bag and pad etc. And lots of food that provides fuel for the stove to keep heating your body. Avoid stepping in puddles and if have to cross river plan ahead with light water shoes or go barefoot, caution sharp rocks that can slice open numb feet in rivers and slippery rocks due to moss etc. Ziplock bags or lightweight dry bags are your friend in the mountains to keep things dry. Hope that helps, happy adventuring!
@jankralik533 Thanks for the question, see reply, happy trails🏔️
@@airoutthere thank you for your response
Nice video. Very relaxing to watch. May I ask what brand and model on the skies you use? Thanks
@alva_niklas Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it! Ski’s: Brand-G3 / Model-SEEKr. Several years old so not sure what G3 has on market currently. Bindings: G3 Zed 12 Skins: G3 alpinist universal Hope that helps, enjoy your adventures 🏔️⛷️
spectacular video and experience. What was the approx. total weight of your backpack and how many hours did you walk from the parking to the place you put up the tent? Really curious if I could manage carrying all those nice things..... well done!
@maxw1nter Thanks for the comment/questions! Approximate weight of loaded backpack ~50-60 lbs…but that’s a guess as I rarely weigh it or track distance/times, more about the trip and destination/experience for me. It’s an old backpack so that adds more weight compared to the new lighter packs available these days. ~3-4 hours skinning up but I don’t rush and try to avoid sweating and I enjoy taking footage enroute, snacking, hydrating and enjoying the surroundings. Hope that helps and that you get into the air out there soon, enjoy!
Love the content please keep posting. a bicycle front light might up your game for filming at night and they are relatively pretty light weight.
Thanks for the comment and lighting tip. Will post next when able. For additional footage, head over to Instagram for shorter additional clips. All the best!
What is the reflective tarp you use under your sleeping pad?
Thanks for watching, the big reflective tarp is a multipurpose tarp, can be found online at following stores, and possibly more stores: Canadian Tire, Cabella’s or MEC (Mountain Equipment Company), it is listed as SOL Brand (Survive Outdoors Longer: All Season Blanket; four season of protection | windproof | durable | heat reflective and waterproof | rugged lightweight tarp | highly visible). Price ranges from ~$21.99-$25.95. Advertised to reflect 80% of radiated body heat. Very versatile. We use it as internal tent footprint and could come in handy for signalling for SAR and survival blanket, etc. Have a good one.
Great stuff man!
Hey man what’s the exact reflectix sheet u put down there ?

I love the tent vestibule snow pit camping arrangement. Sitting, cooking and getting in and out is nice. Great spot and nice tent. Excellent outing
Awesome viewing. Appreciate your work! Stay safe and God bless you!!

Thanks for watching and for another encouraging comment! Have an awesome week😁🌄
Love your video. Excited to see the view of skiing down the mountain. Just way too short.God bless you my friend.
Thanks! Very little skiing down on this one as we had a warm spell in our area that melted most of the snow. It was still fun to get out there again! The first day was beauty with sun and sunset. Second day was more moody weather but I never regret getting outdoors into the fresh mountain air. Glad you enjoyed it & God bless you too!
What a beautiful scenery my friend, shots are brilliant!
Thanks Ervin for watching again and another kind comment! Grateful to be able to be active, and get out there to film and share a glimpse of the beauty that’s out there. Have an awesome day!
What drone are you using? Looks like it’s able to kinda follow?
@scottponiewaz1316 Thanks for watching. The drone is the DJI Mini 2, it doesn’t have a follow feature but quick shots (programmed shots one can select and drone will auto fly), which enable you to lock on subject of your choice during the quick shot. If subject is moving too quickly it will end the quick shot. The latest model (DJI Mini 4) does have follow feature and additional sensors to avoid objects. Hope that helps!
Awesome video dude definitely gained a subscriber
Awesome thank you!
Another great video. I'd really like to hear some hiking stats, how far in, elevation gain, time traveled. I looked up the MSR Remote, nice Tent, that large Vestibule will come in handy for sure!!
@jeremypeter4048 Thanks again for watching/encouraging comment! When I head out I try to unplug and don’t track any info…but if viewers are interested in stats I can track some next time😊. This trip wasn’t a big one ~2,280’ elevation gain, some flat sections but mostly a climb, time travelled trailhead to camp ~3.5 hours skinning up but took breaks for delayering, filming, hydrating and snacks. I didn’t track distance so not sure this time but ~3.5 km in. Next morning skinned up to ridge and skied down to camp which is super fun to ski down back to the tent! Still amazes me how fast it is coming down on ski’s, heavy overnight camp pack so the climb is definitely slower than a day ski tour. Very happy with the new MSR Remote 2 tent, looking forward to trying it in the alpine in strong winds etc. The snow skirting on vestibules is a big plus, the side entries and exits make for ease of exit/entry and large vestibule is a great cooking area out of the weather. Hope that helps!
👍11 I love this wonderful, uplifting feeling! 👍👏
Great trip, really enjoyed that. Going to be heading out west in Feb to do some touring and camping as well!! What's that big reflective mat that you have under your sleeping pad?

What a filming bud 😮😮 outstanding content!
Thanks Ervin!
I'm very sorry to see you lost your tent. Given how much high country winter skiing/trekking you are doing, you should consider a used Hilleberg 4 season tent. I definitely love mine. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Best of luck to you.
Thanks for watching and the Hilleberg tip. What do you like about the Hilleberg tents? Where can one find used ones to purchase? I looked at the Hilleberg tents online the last few days. They do sound like a solid lightweight 4 season tent. My wife and I ordered the Mountain Hardware Outpost 2 as it’s currently on sale, similar to our former MSR Fusion 2, fairly lightweight and compact, 2 vestibules and should handle most of the adventures. Maybe one day I can look more seriously at the Hilleberg line.
Happy New Year!
All the best for 2024!

Love your channel. Not many else on youtube who combine the skiing with the camping and make quality content on it like yourself. Do you actually know of any other channels?
@Mikenolan123 thanks for the encouraging feedback! A few channels I really enjoy which sometimes have winter camping included with their ski touring trips: @Nicolai_Schirmer @CodyTownsend @patagonia I enjoy how these channels tell stories of their adventures and show the work, decision making and joy involved to document/travel/camp in the majestic mountains. Thanks again for watching and commenting. If not too much to ask, please let others know about my channel and subscribe, as it really helps me to get out there to make additional content that hopefully inspires and encourages others. Nice Video! I love Winter Camping! Whats the name oh the Tent?
@user-vy8ex8wn4m We have had this tent for years, MSR Fusion 2, not sure if still available from MSR but they probably have other similar options. Ours is 4 season, double wall (solid fly with vents plus mesh tent). MSR makes great gear (not sponsored so unbiased feedback). They also have excellent customer support from our experience. Enjoy your adventures out there!
@@airoutthere thank you for your answer! I thought that the Mountain Hardware Outpost 2 is a good alternative. I am searching for an all Season tent which isnt to heavy.
@user-vy8ex8wn4m I hope you find what suits your needs. I find the 4 season tents are bit heavier but worth it as usually slightly better construction to handle most stiff winds and wet heavy snow loading (still have to brush our tent off occasionally to prevent tent from caving in and/or poles from breaking if heavy wet snow). Reflectors on tents and highly visible colour are helpful too if returning in dark with headlamp or for SAR. I put down a reflective tarp inside to stay dry from snow and it helps a bit to prevent heat transfer. Also I currently use 2 air sleeping pads in winter with a good down sleeping bag but may research/buy one thick air pad as gear options better as each year passes. A proper large fly that actually covers entire tent but still allows some airflow and pegs out securely with vestibule(s) is great for any season, especially in winter, the vestibule on ours is great for digging out to have feet lower to take off/put on boots and other gear. I would probably try for 2 vestibules on next tent if doesn’t add too much weight. There are many options/shapes/sizes out there for tents or tarp prop up options with hiking/ski pole in centre style (dyneema material I’ve heard is super lightweight and durable etc), depends on what terrain you’re travelling in and what type of adventures you’re doing and price willing to spend. For me personally it’s about getting out there with family & friends, with gear I have currently and occasionally upgrading as necessary if able. The beauty out there in creation is too incredible to pass up. Wish you all the best in your search for a new tent and safe travels!

Cool Video Bro. Did you notice the Bonus you captured on video in your "last run" footage??? What were the Temps like? Is the Ocean very warm? Is there opportunity to harvest your own Seafood? I noticed some Sea Urchins, apparently those are very tasty.
Thanks, was an awesome time there! Haha, good eye I was wondering if anyone would catch that! I noticed that when reviewing footage for edit and I think it was a crab as there was very fast tiny ones! Temps high ~23c & low ~12c, very nice temps and humid. Periods of rain but even that felt warm/tropical and made for some magnificent rainbows! Yes the ocean is warm, no problem to swim without a wetsuit. Not sure about harvesting your own seafood, people do spearfish etc but I’m not sure about the fishing regulations. We really enjoyed the snorkelling/free diving enjoying all the colourful sea creatures!
Very cool!!
Thanks for watching!
Loved the video, looked like you guys had a lot of fun. I wish I could have come with you. My favorite part as you can probably guess was the horse back riding. I would have loved to do and go swimming with the horses. And I can see that the cats were mad that you left 😂
Aloha Izzy! It was a blessing to be there for sure, such a beautiful isle 🙌🏽🌅🏝️ Haha, for sure the horse back riding was special for the birthday girl! Still on bucket list for her to swim with a horse one day too. Cats do that occasionally when we are here too, they get more mischievous when inside more during the winter🤣Have an awesome week, Mahalo!
Thanks to you, it's healing and cool! 😊 And it's so nice to feel the beauty!👍👏 AIR OUT THERE! 🌹🍀 H ave a day with a happy smile! 🙏
