    Very interesting. I’d heard that the X500’s were “tippy” but had only seen a couple of videos where people were saying about durability. I suspected that the issues were where the folds were and caused by brittle failure due to cold. Not seen anything before about banana issue, but I guess that it only takes the production to be slightly out of line and there could easily be issues with the shape. Glad that Decathlon dealt with it without quibbling.

    • @danerik.westerlind
      @danerik.westerlind 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes Decathlon was really good! For me x500 is not tippy at all, just as fine as my sea kayak. But I guess the people that find it tippy don't paddle sea kayak, instead they compare to other inflatable kayaks that are wider and not built in this way. So far I think this is the best inflatable kayak when it comes to performance of a hard sea kayak, I have not tested all inflatable kayaks, so it might be a better option. Of coarse this is shorter and don´t have the speed of a long sea kayak. When it comes to durability it seems that they have problem but we have had our kayaks now for more than a year and don´t have any issues. I ran over a sharp rock, so I needed to repair a little hole, that´s all and I can´t blame built quality on that. Before that I have hit stones, many many times so I started to believe that it was indestructible. So far I just can say that durability is really good.

      @@danerik.westerlind - I have IK’s and also a hard SOT kayak. I don’t think that I’d call any of them indestructible, but they all seem reasonably tough. Your X500 will certainly be more rigid than my Itiwit 3’s. I’m ready for a rip in the hull of mine every time I hear a scraping noise, but so far so good. When that happens, I’ll weld a big PVC patch on it with a heat gun. Thanks for the video, I’ll look forward to seeing more of your channel!

    Hi, great video! Congrats on your new kayak! I love sea kayaking and recently started paddle boarding over the summer. I have a Red Compact 12' and I love it, but sometimes I wonder if I could go a little faster. I was wondering if you could share any guidance on if a 14' board is significantly faster than a 12' SUP. The Starboard Icon 14' is temping, but I'm not sure if it's a smart purchase with me already having a 12' SUP. Also, as far as paddling efficiency, I understand that a board that is 28" wide and less would help with speed, but I prefer to stay at 32" width - I use my SUP for full day paddles and often have gear (cooler, cameras, etc.) that I utilize throughout the day. For me, 32" feels like a sweet spot for stability and really dont want to do anything less than that. The Starboard Icon is 14' at 32" wide with a 4.7" center thickness. I just thought I'd ask if you thought the Icon would be significantly faster than the Red 12' Compact at 32" wide. Thanks in advance! And love you videos!

    • @danerik.westerlind
      @danerik.westerlind 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks, really appreciate it! I always recommend to try before buying. Red paddle build stable boards, downside of stable is speed, so red paddle is stable and slow. I have tested red compact but not starboard icon. Starboard icon 14x32 and starboard touring 14x32 is the same shape, I have paddle starboard touring 28 but not 32. Starboard touring is a faster board because it’s touring but also not as stable as red paddle compact series with the allround shape. Some general boards observations. Look how wide the tail is, look how the curve goes from the tail to the widest point of the board. Look at the curve from the widest point of the board to the nose, how does the nose look? If you compare you can see how stable or fast a board will be. Wider=more stable but slower. Also a longer board will gain little more stability over a short board. So if you go from 12 to 14 you will get more stability but also more board length add more resistance and also more speed because of a longer board. A red paddle Voyager are faster because of board shape than a compact. A red paddle sport 14+ might be more stable than a starboard icon because of board shape. I say might because sometimes there are more than just board shape going on. So best thing is to take your board and go to a shop that offers testing, so you can compare with what you have on the water. Maybe I added more questions than answers.

    • @cre8iveworks
      @cre8iveworks 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@danerik.westerlind Thank you so much. I appreciate your help! I've also considered the Voyager, but it is 13'2 is 30" wide and I prefer a 32" wide board. I'm not sure if a board under 32" wide will put me out of my comfort zone. It is also 6" thick and I prefer a 4.7" thick board so when the wind picks up and the water gets choppy, I feel more more sure footed with my balance. I often paddle wide rivers and bays that are exposed to wind with chop and boat wake. I would also like to get into coastal paddling (but with the confidence of a stable board). Unfortunately, where I live (Virginia, US), there is not an option to test a board - I have to buy online without testing it so I have to do a lot of research before buying a board. The Icon 14'x32" is 4.7" thick (in the center footing area), but the rails are 5.9". The Starboard Touring 14'x32" was also on my list, but it is 6" thick all around (perhaps I need to reconsider this board). The Voyager 13'2" is also 5.9" thick at 30" wide. The 14' Sport+ is 28" wide which doesnt work for me as I just really prefer more stability and the ability to move around the board without the primary concern of keeping balance. I tend to do all day paddles and will tour around for 6+ hours - a 32" board allows for room to move around without risking balance and is way more forgiving especially when I want to grab items out of my cooler and have lunch on my board without the risk of an unintended swim. I use cameras with a selfie stick and like that I can easily change batteries or adjust the camera when needed without worrying about balance. I was hoping for a board that is 13' to 14" long, 32" wide at 4.7" thick for both speed and stability - which I'm realizing may not exactly exist. I do love how stable the Red 12' Compact is and that is has D rings with removable tie downs for front and back storage. It sounds like to gain more speed, I'll need to compromise the width and and ultimately stability. Thank you so much again for your help sorting this out.

It made me sad to think that I'm so "past it" now. I hope you enjoy watching. Here is the link. th-cam.com/video/IAwBKwog23g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=j73oyBIdqv2JM2Rr

    I just got this board in 12'6 30" size. When I put the board on the water, floating without a paddler both front and back are high up(like a banana shape) The back is so high up that the fin box and about a 1 centimeter of fin is above water. I'm not sure if I got a faulty board or if that board suppose to look like that.?

      I have never seen a Starboard with banana shape but all can fail. My is flat on the water, only the rocker that is above water and it touch the water just after the nose ring and after that the board is flat all the way. Feels like something is wrong. Contact your dealer and tell them about the problem, that is what I should have done.

    Thank you for sharing your day out in Hasjo and for sharing the memories of your childhood in this magical place. The church is so old and interesting. It's good you had great conditions after driving all that way. Erika did a good "save" when she stumbled. I would have fallen in with a huge splash! I am about to go for a paddle on the Woronora River with my friends from Sutherland Shire Canoe Club. I'm paddling my NK Exrcize and hoping there are not too many power boats to destroy the peace. Summer has come early and it is forecast to hit 24 degrees C today.

      @@danerik.westerlind It would be amazing to sing in that beautiful church. But if you sang badly, the giant might return and throw more rocks! I had a good paddle in the NK. There were jet skis and power boats but we managed to stay upright in the wake and even ride the wash. It's a great ski for stability and very light weight for getting on and off the car roof racks. The weather is always like this in Sydney. One day you need a coat and a week later you only need a t-shirt. It's likely to get cold again for a while. The warmth is lovely because it isn't humid yet. Have a great week and enjoy your paddling with Erika.

      Yes the church is so beautiful. Yes there are a lot of similar stories in Sweden too, not only here and I love this old stories. I did look a lot after the gigant as a kid while we where out boating but he always hide, so I have never seen the gigant😢

    • @danerik.westerlind
      @danerik.westerlind หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes really beautiful and I looked a lot after the gigant as a kid but have never seen the giant.😢 Short answer about PFD and paddle boarding, I´m standing on it attached to it. This is still summer when it's recorded and it was on my summer vacation. Summer is not ended here in Sweden but it´s the last part. A slightly longer answer about risks. This is how my risk assessment looked for this paddling. I assess the risk differently for kayak and SUP. I also assess risk differently for different weather conditions and seasons. The most important thing is that it does not start with a pfd for me. My opinion is that it starts with training the body, at home, in the gym, then it continues with practicing self-rescue with kayak/sup and friend rescue. Anyone who does not practice self-rescue every year should also not paddle alone.🤗
