The Desert Training Center, aka California-Arizona Maneuver Area, was also in the Southern tip of Nevada. I think you are wrong on the craters. They had to have been made by high explosives. A practice bomb will skip across the ground or will bury itself. I worked on bomb cleanup up at Nellis AFB, Nevada. :-)
