Wow, a warship from the Netherlands operating in waters around Hawaii. I might be a bit slow, and know RIMPAC is open to all USA Allies. But I am wondering about the logistics of sending a frigate more than half way around the world, transversing the Indian Ocean to the North-East/Central Pacific. Who paid for their fuel? Are they doing a circumventing world cruise and returning to the Netherlands by way of the Panama Canal? Do they have their own supply ships, or are they using allies? Or Is it because the Netherlands still have a National Interest in Shell Oil? Which still operates in their former colonies.... I guess I answered my own question in my rambling text. I.E. I assume that the Netherlands still has a Major Economic reason to have a Military presence in the "Pacific" region.

Wtf? Rather than sink it, why wasn't it donated to the Philippines to replace the Sierra Madre...? One problem these days is there's very little common sense left in the world... Common sense, common decency, common courtesy... None of these are "common" anymore... SMH 😠

When did this plane appear in the War ? I'm interested in the TWIN engine Sea Planes that rescued the crews of the 1940/1 Blenni's and Others, who crash-landed into the Channel, and their Crew members floated in dinghies, until THEY were later found and rescued, and returned to their bases in England, to fly again a couple of nights later. I don't want to learn about the much later 4 engine jobs ....

Watching this as I'm standing in front of it at the Heritage Aviation Museum of Perth, WA. The wingspan is incredible! Beautiful aircraft

I love the Catalina. She has an unmatched beauty about her. Catalina’s are among my absolute favorite of aircraft. On a side note, she’s really displaying her left-turning tendencies on takeoff here. She has no rudder in the water and her actual rudder has no influence until she gains adequate airspeed. Hence she makes the wide left turn towards shore in spite of the extreme right rudder deflection applied by the pilot. Once she’s up to speed, then she straightens out and flies right. As beautifully as ever.

The director of the museum where I worked introduced me to a PBY pilot who swore that if he survived the war he would buy one and fly it around the world. And he did just that. It was such a pleasure to meet him and hear his stories.

When I was a teenager in 1964 working for Saskair I used to gas up this plane. I think the capacity was 1380 gallons. Of course we never filled it. I also went on a trip with it.

Really? No one sees the float narrowly miss the boat on the right??? It's not the long lens either, the boat gets sprayed from the PBY just as that float barely swings up and over the boat!!!😅😅

Whether done on purpose or not, note: that perhaps attempting to get wings level, the ailerons YAW + torque drove the planes heading to shore. Scary for a moment.

Canadian from NB , Father was radio operator who ferried them from NJ to Ireland. Uncle from Boston was mechanic in Borneo. Greatest generation indeed.

I love the PBY Catalina so much, that I have immortalised it in one of my books, and musical screenplays. It's just a great plane, that I am sure many downed pilots, and sailors adrift in the sea, were extremely happy to see them, coming down to be rescued. What a legend of a plane!
