What did you think of the film?

Depends on criteria used. Your average pub player is as good as the Edge in playing terms, but what he has achieved may make him 'Greater' rather than 'Better' Guthrie Govan is arguably the best player in world and has been for years, but has limited commercial exposure. Allan Holdsworth is lauded by many including Eddie Van Halen as the greatest. John Maclaughlin is a genius in the Jazz Rock world (You dont play for Miles Davis otherwise) If you were to ask every player on this list who was the best, then I could guarantee that 9 out of the 10 would say Jeff Beck. Blackmore and Iommi are the founders of Metal/Hard Rock and their longevity and contributions through Deep Purple, Rainbow and Sabbath far outweigh most on this list.

Blackmore, Beck, Fripp, Steve Howe, steve hackett, iommi , peter green, pete townshend, keef, rory, mick ronson, andy summers, alvin lee, martin barre, robin trower and thats just a few

Jerry Donohue or Richard Thompson could outplay most of that list.

By chance do you work for Rolling Stone mag? Edge? I can play anything he’s played and write better guitar music than him and I’m not even a guitarist. Harrison? Like the Beatles are my top 3 but the Beatles had to bring in other guitarists to play songs George couldn’t. I’m surprised you didn’t put the guitarists from the Monkees and Abba in there. Don’t be offended. You put yourself out there and you need to face the backlash.

Peter Green would be my number one.

Just my personal opinion here and I am grading them because of their ability to add something to a piece of music, not just because they have amazing speed or textbook technique. Almost all of these fabulous guitarists have written songs with their exceptional musical abilities. If you want speed and technique then TH-cam is full of unknown amazing guitarists.

All totally subjective, as commercial success does not mean you’re a good player, along with other crucial factors to consider. Slash is good but certainly not the best, and ranking him to that of Hendrix is not really a compliment, unless you’re speaking acoustically. The Edge himself admitted he is an effects person, and not a clean solo or chord player. May is a great guitarist, but certainly not the best due to his style. And watching him play with Les Paul will illustrate that. In al fairness these are just very commercial guitarists based more on popularity rather than skill & technique. Compare all of the above to players like Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Dave Gregory, Steve Hackett or Peter Green to name but a few.

Who doesn't like the Beatles, I love the Get Back documentaries too. Having recorded at Abbey Road twice I can say that you can feel them in the room helping you to perform :-)
