Ralph Otho Hood
Ralph Otho Hood, (the Great Grandfather of yacht designers Chris Hood) invented and patented the first gasoline electric hybrid automobile in 1904. But that was not his only invention. Watch the short story about this ingenious designer and the clever crew at Firefly Restorations of Hope, Maine, who 'restored' Ralph Hood's first automobile ; The "Electronomic Safety Steam Vehicle".
This was a video I made for the Owls Head Transportation Museum, where the automobile is now on display, thanks to the The Richard C Paine Jr Automobile Collection Charitable Trust.

There is absolutely nothing prettier than a Gil Smith transom! Nicely done. My neighbor in Sayville, LI, NY had one of the last Gil Smith boats built in the early 30s, a 30fter, that I watched him singlehandedly restore and occasionally served as his gopher as a grade schooler in the mid-60s. It was simply gorgeous - unfortunately he sold it in the early 70s to someone who didn’t know how to take care of it and it was gone by 1975.

A piece of context here: Peter Webb & Todd French managed the large boat program at the Landin School in 85/86 and supervised the construction of ALERION to the Hart collection plans. It was perhaps even more arduous than building under LR survey. Everything had to be as it was originally--including building a mould for every frame, and steam bending a massive freshly cut white oak stem. The mould took too long, actually everything did. The stem split--I remember at least twice. Finally Hart relented and allowed a laminated stem. The boat was not completed in an academic year, so it was moved to Stu Gillam's shop in K'port and the final launch was beautiful. Peter and Todd were very good teachers, and excellent shipwrights, and I cannot think of a more qualified team to carry out the Marilee project. If I were them I would be thrilled beyond belief.

The boats in NE Harbor are absolutely stunning. However there is one that is red on one side a green on the other. It makes it very confusing when you’re racing. Where tf did that red boat come from and where th did the green boat go?

I grew up sailing Flying Dutchmans on Great South Bay where we would run into old Gil Smith boats. We'd be soaking wet out on our trapezes, carefully keeping our boats level, while they were dry, stable and fast. It used to make me think that somehow we were in the wrong boats.

Gentlemen. As one who was exposed to the nearly hypnotic joy of sailing several years ago. The sound of the breeze through the rigging, the slap of wave against hull, the spray, or challenge of a well executed upwind tack. This video was tonic to the soul. From the wonderfully done workmanship of a beautiful restoration to the scenes of racing seamanship. I would love to be part of a 'blue water' cruise of several days aboard Marilee. That would be the best thing this side of heaven. Thank you for a wonderful video, the hard well done work ( labor not in vain) and, the moments of joyful memories stirred of overnight trips aboard a 32' Sloop on the Great Lakes. Fair winds and following seas gentlemen.

thank you so much for your beautiful way of wording very familiar sensations. Had a small (just shy of 10 meter) sailboat, main sheet with a gaff, no boom, and a jib... not a racing boat by all means, but the pleasures she gave me are hard to describe. all wood, sailed in the upper Italian Tyrrhenian sea, sailed to North-East Corsica and Sardinia, down to Ischia and Ventotene Islands, way to Capri and as far South to Amalfi, then back to Giannutri and Giglio islands, wintering twice in Porto Santo Stefano (Tuscany's Argentario promontory), back to Elba & Capraia Islands, then always stopping in the Lerici or Portovenere area before returning to Santa Margherita/Portofino. Hole month sailing in August, mid '70s... still dreaming about it.

I have long dreamed of seeing places along the Mediterranean coast of Italy. Visiting faraway places in that area. Sampling the foods.
