Hello, i am making a simple simulation of boat. With the purpose that this simulation can give me best shape of a lower part of a boat in water and that boat has good aerodinamic. So i can make it in real life. Do you have any recomendation about how do i get to this shape without using programming. I am on a schedule, so i would be very happy for answers. Thank you very much!

No resistance has been calculated, but unly a few informative plots. In order to get Rt a goal is missed. Define a new global goal F(z) that will return total force exerted by water and air agaisnt the ship motion. The subscript "Z" depends on the reference frame used. In this case ship moves along Z. Knowing that air drag can be neglected when compared with water effect ,the goal value can be taken as total Rt. If only water effect is required, then a Surface Goal must be defined for the external hull surface only. In fact it would have to be done for the submerged hull, but as this is an "unknown" it will depend on water surface shape, taking the whole external surfaces of the hull will return accurately enough results. Wich surfaces to choose will depend on the ship shape and areas distribution. ....... No CFD can think by itself Rt coefficient Cr, can then be obtained by: Cr= Rt/(dens x WA x V²)/2 with Rt = Total resistance force F(z) dens= water density WA = wetted area V = water speed relative to ship. All in consistent units. SI or Imperial. DO NOT USE KNOTS AS SPEED UNITS IN THE ABOVE FORMULA.

Hello M. Harris, I have a problem in my free surface flow simulation, the water is falling out of the computational domain. The gravity box is checked in the general settings and I'd like to keep it that way to get a good simulation. Any solution for this problem ?

This CFD is not capable of that computation but, trim can be calculated by other means out of solidworks. Then the model can be rotated to fit the new trim and the computation run again. In order to solve for the whole thing as you are asking, a multiphysics solver is required.

So this is a tutorial for those that already know how to do all of this? None of this makes sense.
If someone gave you 100 thousand dollars to design a 100 foot motor yacht (jets vs propellers) that can travel at 60 knots; - what software would you use to design the ships aluminum hull. What software would you use to check performance at different speeds and at different wave heights. IMO i believe Computer/softwares fluid dynamics is less expensive and provides a very quick turnaround ( a different design each day for 45 days until its perfected) of data before actually building a 10 foot scale model and test it in a water tank.

Hey there! I'm having trouble setting a simulation similar to this. The water does an illogical movement when hitting the hull, as if its velocity was way higher than the one used in the settings. Would you be so kind as to tell me what options were made in the setup? Maybe it is something simple I am not setting in the initial parameters... I would be eternally grateful for it! Did you mean the 3D Profile feature?? You can find that in Cut Plot setting at Contours section. Watch on 0:23 Have a nice day..

Hi Natal, the Vx is the velocity with respect to the coordinate system (also Vy or Vz). TKE is the turbulence kinetic energy (the kinetic energy per unit mass), and TED is the turbulence energy dissipation. For the more reference, you can look that in Wikipedia.

Hello Gomez, I think this software is incapable for the free surface effect. Maybe you can use Ansys or Solidworks Flow Simulation 2018. But more easy with SW Flow Simulation

Yeah, the software can draw anything depending on your design. I think not all analysis, for the resistance and free surface it is possible with it CFD's feature (Flow Simulation).

Well, but there is no free surface effect. The hull has been supposed to be fully inmersed, and no wave formation is returned. It would be a lot more interesting if the free transition surface (Air/Water) could be analyzed.
M81 if like that, you can use ansys cfx or openfoam
I know Harris. But I think that with a proper setup, Autodesk could do that. Anyway, Im more fond of Fluent or cfx by now.
