Public Safety Hero - Rachel Baskin
In July 2009, Rachel Baskin was a paralegal living in Reedley, California with her mother, brother and 18-month-old daughter. She was going through a divorce after an abusive and traumatizing marriage to her soon to be ex-husband who was enlisted as a US Marine. He was living on the Marine base in San Diego, and she had left him and was staying with her brother until she could get on her feet. Struggling to make ends-meat, Rachel was requesting her husband to pay child support and there was a contentious battle over finances.
On July 16, 2009, her husband came to Reedley, dressed in his Marine fatigues, and attempted to kill Rachel, her mother Linda, and her brother Christopher. He was hiding in the garage of their home in the early morning hours, and attacked Rachel as she came out to get her clothes from the laundry. He held all three of them hostage for a time period, he then shot Rachel in the head, grazing her scalp; shot her brother in the head, cut her mother’s throat; and then cut Rachel’s throat. In the chaos, somehow Christopher was able to create an opportunity for his mom and sister to escape the bloodbath.
Rachel was able to grab her baby girl, and even though the knife wounds had severed her external jugular vein, she was able to wave down a good Samaritan who called 911. Linda was also able to get out of the house and find safety at a neighbor’s home. When the authorities arrived, all three victims were taken to CRMC for life-saving surgeries. All 3 survived.
Rachel’s case was prosecuted by DDA Lisa Sondergaard Smittcamp. In September of 2012, Dejon Baskin was found guilty of 3 counts of attempted murder, with gun and knife enhancements, and was sentenced to 77 years to life in the California Dept of Corrections.
Rachel told Lisa she had always wanted to be a prosecutor. After the trial, they stayed in touch, and Rachel went on to get her BA at Fresno Pacific, her JD at San Joaquin College of Law, passed the California Bar Exam, and was sworn in as a Deputy DA by her former prosecutor and friend, Lisa Smittcamp, in September 2021. Since then Rachel has become a fine prosecutor and served in the Misdemeanor Unit, the Juvenile Unit, and is currently assigned to the Felony Trial Team. Rachel’s mom and brother are both alive and well and her daughter is thriving in high school, anticipating going to college as an Engineering major after graduation.

Is it worse than seeing your ship cut up in a scrap yard?
i served on 2 ships, this one which was sunk, and a tico cruiser which was cut up. its hard to see her sink, but she still exists, the cruiser is no more. so id rather see them sunk.
All lies not there to help but control you
I have now lost my niece. 7 days ago. Funeral today! 2022 took my best friends only child, her daughter. The sorrow is horrific!!!!😢😢😢😢😢 so sorry about your son. 😢😢😢😢
That ain’t no mlk 😂
Got to tour the ship when it made a port call in Sitka Alaska in 89-90 We got up to the bridge and the seaman giving the tour points up to the ceiling at a box mounted to it. “You may have hear the US has just launched the first sat til its a new satellite navigation system called Global Position System” it is going to be accurate to five feet. We are going to spend 2 billion dollars for it” “ you see this, many of you have it on your boats. It is a Loran-C and we spent 2 thousand for it at the fisherman’s supply in Seattle. It is accurate to a fifty foot circle. This ship is 560 feet long and seventy feet wide. Chances are some part of this ship will be touching that circle.
GPS isn't for guiding landing ships to the right beach. And what did the LORAN system cost to develop and operate? It used a worldwide array of high power transmitter installations. You can get a complete graphical GPS receiver for under $100, or a USB receiver for $10. $2000 in 1980 is about $7600 now.
Good ship, great crew! HT2, 72-75.
Miss that old girl - GMG3 Peterson ('88-'90)
Did you happen to have a known a QM2 David Ward?
Still have my ball cap and flying squad shirts. Dec 88'- Dec 90' Htfr- HT 3. I see Frederick 1184 is in there also my 2nd duty station (t,a,d).
I was in High school when you did a port call on the 4th of July at Sitka Alaska. Took the ship tour. That has to be 89 or 90

@@scottmacleod6301 ah figured it was worth a try. He was my father that had passed away in 2009 and I actually stumbled upon this clip of the ship he used to talk about a lot. I really appreciate you responding Scott.

Beautiful job.! Thank you for posting this. I sure do miss the ol' girl and the shipmates I served with. EN3 Hutchins.

Grew up in this juvenile hall 2006-2013. Glad to say I’m now on parole and still trapped in the system. Used to get contraband from guards and even knew a couple of them messing around with some of the other kids

Go on TH-cam. Look up Fresno County Department of Social Services - CalSaws on the search bar. This video shows several Fresno County - Department of Social Services - Division Chiefs singing and dancing while at work. They were "celebrating" the transition from CalWin to CalSaws. The new system, CalSaws, is a computer application being used by staff to issue benefits to people receiving public assistance. The transition was a complete disaster as the training was very ineffective. All the workers with Fresno County DSS were not adequately trained on how to use the new system. Sadly, a month after this video was made, the Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to give the Division Chiefs a 30% raise. They are currently making $115,000 a year and will soon be making $130,000 a year by 2026

Who created the sculpture at Trolley Creek?
The "Children Dance" sculpture was designed by Clement Renzi.
Locking up little kids just isn't right, you know? They're still learning about the world and making mistakes is part of growing up. When you throw a child in jail, you take away their chance to learn from those mistakes in a healthy way. Instead of learning how to do better, they're just learning how to survive in a place that's way too harsh for someone their age. Plus, it can mess with their heads and make it even harder for them to find a good path in life later on. There’s gotta be a better way to help them learn and grow without throwing away their potential.
Fuck Perez she owe me chips still
