Starting a Guitar Business - Part 3: Musings
Here we have a bit of an 'interim' episode. We've been doing the work of setting up the business all legal-like, but we've been waiting on a meeting with the small business development folks to answer a couple vital questions, and we want to talk about all that stuff all at once. So in the meantime, we felt that summing up some of the high-level thoughts and concerns we've chewed on the past few weeks might be useful.

Rebuilding the Xanadu - Part VIII: Resurrected & Revealed! THE GRAND FINALE!

Well over a year in the making, the reimagined Xanadu is FINISHED. You have been more than patient, and as promised, here it is! So for one last leap into the fire I take on the modest task of resurrecting the original guitar. It hasn't made noise pretty much since I built it in '81 and has survived (?) decades of neglect living in a detached non-hermetically-sealed garage, many years of which ...

Hello again! We're back with episode four of this series - How Long Does It Really Take To Build Three (Mostly) Identical Guitars? Weather, life, and commissions got in the way, but we're still tallying up an hourly record of however long this takes. In this episode, necks are rough and then finesse-shaped, and Mark fights with Kent's maybe less than wise choice of fretboard wood. Fun times gal...

During a break from our regularly scheduled build videos, Kent and Mark ponder the question: how much do you really need to spend on a nice guitar? We're taking three Les Paul-style axes ranging from current market value of close to $4k down to just under $400: the real thing (vintage '81 LP Custom), a 2019 Epi version, and a 2015 Agile AL-3100 MCC and comparing them on absolutely equal footing...

Making a Business out of your hobby is the ultimate aim, keep believing and make it work!
I won't bother with the cliche of "is it work if you're having fun" but dang does the time fly by doing your own thing!
@@davespeer amen, and hell yes!
I'm glad you got the AC and heat situation worked out! And getting organized so that you're happy with the space has to be a huge mental relief, as well. It'll be safer, too, from what you describe. Gotta keep yourself in one piece and protect the lungs, etc.
Thanks Mike, and totally agree. The mental aspect of getting a place right is not to be underestimated. 😊
man that bench is killer very jealous! any idea if youre gonna sell standard-ish templates for things?
Thanks man! So far really loving the new bench, what a change having something designed specifically for guitar-related work. And yeah, definitely planning on some standardized templates, so stay tuned on that front. 😊
In my last shop, I had the same Wen filter hanging from the ceiling. And insulation/AC. No mouse, though. We moved and I didn't hang the Wen because it's too hot in the new shop (garage) so I just work with the door open and fans. But I think I have a mouse this time around 🐭
Hi Kent. Having set up a workshop before in a different life, the best bit of advise is Insulate your building as best you can at the beginning, especially the roof. Keep rockin.............
@@craftyoldgit768 absolutely! I failed to mention that bit (I think I accidentally cut that bit out) The walls were all insulated over the last few months which culminated in tossing up the plywood paneling. I then hung the plastic under the rafters, not so much as an insulator as a way to sort of reduce the amount of space that needs to be heated/cooled. The insulated garage door was the final piece of the puzzle.
Oh! And we’re waiting on some insurance hijinks that one way or another will result in a roof replacement. Then I’ll take care of that bit of insulating. 😎
Looking good, have you got many orders yet?
yaasss! Rock on, gents
Thanks man!!! ❤
That Mark guy is really smart. I agree with everything he has to say.
😂😂😂❤
good luck dude! dont forget to sell extra shit that isnt guitars so we can all buy the merch
Hell yes we will! Stay tuned on that front!

Good luck 🤘🏼
Thanks!!! We’ll take all we can get!
I want an art guitar.
That’s absolutely doable! Whenever you’re ready give us a shout.
- first track was so peaceful and chill until it wasn't lol, awesome. - second track that piezo sounds really good - third track love that body shape killer guitar - fourth track - uke track! awesome. I'm currently writing the demo track for the uke im building atm, thought it was going to be unique, the bar has been set now lol. Maybe we can have a uke off? - fifth track does having a pick in your mouth help with bass playing? that guitar is killer though, the fretboard board on it is awesome and the color on the body is so good - sixth track one of my fav builds for the last ggbo and fav demos. life is better in ripped jeans.
Dude. Thank you so much, you just made my day. And of course a pick in your mouth makes everything play better. 😅
I might have to pony up for that stewmac fret end file. I mean, I know they're not much. But I figured my safe edge triangular file (from them) was good enough, and it still likes to scratch a board.
Mark will surely have more to say on the subject, but I got one myself a couple/three years ago and it really is quite groovy!
I literally have two of them. They're cheap and indispensible. They don't mark up a fretboard if you are careful (although they still can, even with the safe edge) and once you are used to how fast it cuts it's actually pretty simple to create a really smooth bevel. Highly recommend,
bummer that you are giving it away to a school or whatever that has access to more tax money than you can shake a stick at.
gotta get rid of that black sharpie of mine. enoying the vid, now i have to go watch the first 3. seems i missed them
Great videos. It was interesting to see the pickups being wound in one of the other videos. The double neck and uke videos were cool too. They're all great. That's vertical integration...making the instruments that you play.
Thanks Jay! We’re definitely having a blast with this!
'suspicious lighting' 🤣
🤫😏😅
FULL CIRCLE! I enjoyed it
Aww, thanks man!!! It’s been quite the journey!
That is so cool that you got the 1981 guitar back working. It's gotta say something that the proof of concept held up from when you were in high school, and you got it playable again (even the pickups work!), plus made the younger sibling in that style, but of course updated significantly and appropriately. This is a great video series. I enjoyed the whole journey, vicariously, of course. (...Now I just wish I could get that Olivia Newton John song out of my head.... th-cam.com/video/cLi8fTlDEag/w-d-xo.html )
Thanks Mike! I really appreciate the comments! It all came together so much better than I hoped. 😊 And anymore I consider it an ELO song ever since Jeff Lynne re-released it. Though I always kinda had a huge ol’ crush on Olivia. 😋❤️
Love the detail that you gave on your process. Unique and entertaining
I invested 26 minutes and I don't get to see it play?!?! 🤣
Cliffhanger!!! 😋 Don’t worry, next episode is gonna drop in a couple days. Y’all have been waaaay too patient on this series for me to be -that- mean. 😎❤️
I'm sad a dano 57 reissue i won now has dead spots high E and b strings first and second frets. I'm a beginner and I am fond of the guitar because it's easier to fret and I like the string spacing.
Kent here - could be a couple things, and without getting hands on it it's hard to know which. One easy thing to try is to add mass to the neck - sometimes the way the strings resonate with the neck vs. the body can essentially dampen certain frequencies. The theory is if you add mass, it'll move that dampening area. Try clamping a couple capos to the headstock and see if it makes any difference at all. Of course, it could also be loose frets or wonky neck relief. If you've got a guitar tech nearby I'd take it to them to have a look. Might be a decent setup will solve it as well. Mark might have some other thoughts as well. :)
BTW, I've got a mid-90's Dano U2 reissue, and it's honestly one of the best guitars I've ever owned! Man that thing sounds amazing and plays like butter. :)
i make my nuts out of stone.
It's been done. By those seriously committed to rocking out.
don't blow your nut! it's important! believe it or nut.
😂😂😂
nah, man, *I* need to get out more 🤣
I love the opening! I thought you were about to announce that you were starting to harvest your neighbors' trees for build materials. ;-)
Those birds were mad because you were talking smack about that wood. 🤣
😂😂😂 there ya go!
Thank you sir, very informative and helpful and encouraging people who can't afford what the love to do. Blessings and regards from England.
I like to listen to the birds when I'm working, too!
i wish some make a Chibson with a snakehead headstock like PRS better strength and tuning stability.
never a dull moment when working with ''Feature'' wood, only dulled tools!
Ain’t THAT the truth??? 😅
I'm in, but also, when you said cheap I was expecting ~90 bucks, not 250 :D
It’s the damn shipping! 😅
Hah, that's a great idea! Lemme see if I can rustle up a stupidly cheap guitar that could actually be turned into something playable. For this round, I was going after being able to provide a kid with a totally playable instrument.
The way it was rattling around in the shipping box made me think you'd have some repair work to do. I was wrong! Were the strings slackened before shipping? I guess they ship enough instruments around the world that they know what the odds will let them get away with. It's kind of impressive.
Yeah, they were slack. It tuned up nicely!
This is what Thomann is good at: there was *just enough* packing to keep it from damage. They design to a price point and execute perfectly! The strings were slack, yes - but not slack enough to damage the guitar.
The dowel system is cool, it's the same thing Maximum Guitar Works has been doing with their templates for a while now. Seems like it works well.
So you built this guitar in the midst of building your GGBO2022 guitar! I have to say you have some very innovative ideas in this build. I wonder if you used the same (or similar) ideas in a fun guitar build.
Love the shape of the guitar. And the larch works very well with the walnut! Great choice!
I may be more than a year and half late to your build series, but it looks like I've watched this video - back in 2022. Probably through Scott's playlist. Anyway, it was nice watching in context today, after episodes one and two.
Wow! Now I know what Daniel was talking about. Very nice video. I'm more than a year late, but I'll watch the rest of the series.
I came in after watching the podcast too :D
Definitely sell the templates
Definitely something that’s becoming a reality!
Hey brother. I bought myself a 24"x24" Lazer cutter for template making and inlays. I may need to pick your brain about template design. I really like your method man. Killer stuff!✌️&💙
Absolutely, man! Happy to share anything I’ve discovered!
Very industrious templating.
Looking good - and the templates with locating dowels are a good idea. At first I thought you were using Steve's templates from Maximum Guitar Works - I think he's been selling these for a while. Same idea, with off-body locations. Not sure if he has a system for neck angle.
Thanks! Yeah, I’m definitely not the first to come up with this, I looked at Steve’s and a couple others to figure out how I wanted to tackle templates for our designs.
Took 17 min to get to Guitar 1, what a joke video......
A Gibson Les Paul Custom starts at $5K and go up from there. I just bought another LP Custom last October from Sweetwater. If you have a place I can get a Gibson LP Custom brand new for $2,999 then I will buy 3 tomorrow!
Ok, this is freaking me out - I swear I looked up the price on a silverburst custom when making the spec sheets, and now all I can find is just what you’re saying! Where the heck did I get the number I got? A mystery is afoot!
@@TunguskaGuitars $3K is the price of a Gibson USA verson.
I knew the second one was the Gibson LP . I knew the Epiphone was the first one. Epiphone always sound thinner. I never heard of an Agile. Agile is a great sounding guitar, but there just isn't any replacing a Gibson Custom Shop LP. They are not close. They are very distinctive.
the title of the video doesn't make sense.
Blind Test I picked from most preffered to least (All sounded great) #2, #3 , #1. What I heard was my preferrence to the string clarity of a vintage PAF. They just sound more bell like and I love that sound as you hear each string tone more individually. That being said the Eppi would be my favorite for scooped tones since to me it was the darkest sounding guitar out of all three. #3 probably best of both worlds and I'm sure If I was playing it myself, I would like the hotter pickups for higher gain tones, but if I'm playing clean to edge of breakup, the Gibson for sure. What I find is the lower output pickups are better for clean tones to edge of breakup being bell like in tone. For High gain tones hotter output pickups lose that quality the hotter they are and become more scooped in tone and less string to string articulation, but that is what you want for high gain. (I understand the Epi was not the highest output so some of it's scoop in tone was being the only guitar without a maple cap, and yes it does make a difference) High output pickups gives you that preffered creamy distortion sound. Judging these based on only tone is only part of the story, how they feel in your hand and the mojo each create is another that we as veiwers cannot determine. Great video, keep up the great work.
