Monday Morning Surf Club - The worst surf we've ever been in?
มุมมอง 34014 วันที่ผ่านมา
The forecast didn't fill us with much hope this morning with exposure to a fresh windswell measuring 7.5ft at 7 seconds. Couple this with mid-tide and a gusting 30mph north westerly wind and you have just about the worst forecast for the beach at the bottom of the hill. When we arrived for first light all we could see was white water, but we were keen for an invigorating swim about in the wild ...

Well, how did they surf?
Surfboard, bodyboard, longboard, shortboard, kneeboard, handplane?
My trophies are for handboarding not handplane.
Surfboard, bodyboard, kneeboard, handplane?
Epic🤙🏼
🙌 yeeew!
So I'm thinking you could do a tri stringer with ribs that float inside a foam blow that would make a lot stronger conventional foam board. The two side stringers could float too so the shaper only had to deal with the foam and center stringer. Anyways that inside cage needs to be patented and I could see it used to strengthen all types of watercraft from Randy French's Surftech popouts to foilers to tow in boards. They could be cut out of carbon fiber sheets for lightness. You also might consider the tri model to stabilize your cage for a quicker assembly and added strength. Even a double stringer could reduce fidgeting.
Just a bit worried you are working with what you call organic epoxy without masks or more to the point canister respirators. I am not familiar with the term or actual product but the epoxy resin I worked with caused serious brain rot.
I've checked a lot of e-books with woodworking plans. Instructions from WoodPrix are the best I think.
I made it about three weeks ago. On WoodPrix I learned a lot about it. Check it mates.
Well if you can laugh that much in the worst surf what are you like in the best surf?
Always grateful!
Well that did look like bloody hard work but still fun. Better a bad day on the water than a good day in the office! Good on ya boys!
Totally agree! Cheers David!
amazing video brother, turn the music a little bit quieter in the working phase, because it cuts of your performance G, thanks for the content
Thanks for the feedback my man - we'll try to get a better balance of the sound next time!
Thanks for making and posting this video. Love to watch the progress of such beautiful boards.
Thanks man! It's fun to make the videos too - makes us re-think the whole process and try to articulate the thinking in every step :)
What types of planes are those specific and is that a rounded spokeshave?
Lie Nielsen low angle jack plane and brass low angle lock plane. Japanese block plane - not sure what model/size specifically, but around 180mm long. Veritas standard block plane and flat spokeshave made by Clifton - love them all!
Thank you! Happy Holidays!
Oh the look on Buddy's face when he realised he was not going out but acting as lookout/burglar alarm!
Poor Buddy! But he's always happy when we get back to the workshop, eat his breakfast and a nice walk!
@@ottersurfboards Ah yes, the breakfast, we all know that Labradors love breakfast, and dinner and tea and something in between.
Fun times
Beautiful! Where abouts is this?:)
Lekker job boet's from a fellow South African living in London and missing the breaks and waves around Cape Town.
You don't need to be in Hawaii or Indo to put a smile on your face!
Bonkers!
So fun! What a find!
Why are the square profiles 2 mm thicker than the rest of the railstrips? Is there a specific reason?
Some banging waves boys!! Chapeau👍👍
Yeheew, Chris was on fire!
LOVE IT!
Thanks Sebastian!
Great stuff - Bellyboards are the past, the present & the future
yeah thanks man
Foamies are nice for busy waves. So much safer.
You're quite right....a lesson learned in limits of our skills and how important it is to put safety first - thsankfully it was just the boards that were damaged.
Bummer. I was looking around the crowd at the World Belly Boarding Championships at Newquay but didn't see you there. Some great moves to behold, I just wish and hope that the waves here in Harlyn have a bit more punch to get the best out of my bellyboad and newly made hand plane - courtesy of Chris's YT video.
complete bummer - gonna get to work on a 'how to repair' video, haha! Yeah, family commitments mean that the slide passed me by - it looks like it was good fun! Waves and sunshine! Oh yeh, Harlyn is a great punchy wave....it'll really come to life over the coming months when some bigger swells start filling in :)
@@ottersurfboards At least the ripples at Harlyn are bigger than the ones in Sheffield - lol!
I'm not sure you have enough clamps in your workshop - I'll send you some! ;)
haha!! It turns out you can never have too many clamps!
Such a great in depth video. My girlfriend just started and it looks so fun.
Awesome!!! It is so much fun!!!! Have you had a go yet?
Great, thanks for sharing
our pleasure! It's great fun making the videos...shaping next!!!
Just a few clamps then! Love it!
haha! Just a few - it turns out you can never have too many!
looks good bra
Thanks so much!
Really enjoying these, thanks!!
No worries, thanks for the kind words!
what about balsa? too expensive?
Diffficult to trace responsible, biodiverse, regenerative growth and production...needs to travel half way round the globe and locally grown cedar works perfectly for us :)
how do you keep the air from blowing it apart or delaminating it?
Good question! All our boards are fitted with vents that allow them to breathe. Either a goretex one or a bung style one depending on the customers needs :)
sorry, but there is no detail to see
Thanks for the feedback, which part do you feel is missing detail? We try to capture our process as best as we can :)
@@ottersurfboards excuse me, I build ultralight boats and use wood like you. Wide frames without details are frustrating even if your explanations are pertinent. I don't understand your target, but an enthusiast will want to see shapes, work details, compare, draw conclusions, otherwise why would he look? There are hundreds of books about boat building, but a video can be more interesting
@@shase6shase Cool, thanks for the input - we're always trying to learn how to make better videos, so thanks for the thoughtful feedback :) Our intention was to give people a good idea of what to expect when they join us to make a surfboard on one of our workshop weeks as opposed to making a true 'how to make a surfboard' video.
Incredible!
Thanks so much! Have you ever had a go on a wooden surfboard?
That''s what it's all about, having fun!
We couldn't agree more!
great video series!!!!! thanks for sharing!!
You're welcome! Next one coming soon
brilliant and beautiful
Thanks for the love! We were stoked wiht how this project all came together and to see Alan ripping on the board we made for him was incredible!
It's an amazing video . I'm looking to buy equipment soon for a make makeshift space in order to make wooden boards or at least start. Is there a way I can understand more regarding the specs and designs in CAD/design software. Is there a website I can learn more or download standard board designs so I can tweak them as I learn more. I understand the making part I just have never used cad and especially for something like this.!any advice would be welcome. Thanks. The videos are fantastic 😍
Can't wait for September to roll around - the sun may be out by then? Do you wax the top of the board to help grip?
We don't, and have thought about it, but the wetsuit usually does a good job at gripping
so nice to know your idea! very cool video!
Thanks!
Some of the greatest days are in these types of conditions
Absolutely!
Is there a reason why you don't cross laminate the middle layer or have you found that in practice it doesn't warp?
From our experience it's for sure the best way to do it!
Tasty 🤙🏼
yeheew!!
I have my dad’s old board. It needs rubbing down and sealing. Any tips would be gratefully received
Hi, once you have sanded it down it depends what the board was originally finished with, we use a few coats of tung oil, usually does the trick!
Great boards! Really beautiful! I see the Glue is Soudal Advanced Adhesive - anyone know where I can buy it?
Thanks man! It depends where you are, but in the UK there are a couple of online stockists :)
Purest fun. No one getting eaten by 8ft close outs 🎉🎉😎🤙🏽
haha well said!
Always worth it belly-boarding Friends! And hey on a belly board it's always overhead!
Absolutely!!
I am curious how you made the concave in the nose? I'm in the US and I've really been wanting to make a surfboard and my nose rider needs to be replaced soon.
All of our surfboards are hollow and built around an internal frame, the frames are laser cut specifically to each shape and include features such as concave, which means the concave exists prior to shaping. I hope that answers your question!
Would you have the plan for the 9’8 as I am wanting to make my own wooden long surfboard
