    2 32-bit processors? Atari would have called it 64-bit.

    • @WhitePointerGaming
      @WhitePointerGaming 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      That's actually a myth, Atari didn't get 64-bit by adding 32+32 together. The Jaguar actually did contain 64-bit components and that's where they got it from. I have a video all about it here: th-cam.com/video/fyLzVOig6JQ/w-d-xo.html . Interestingly enough it was actually Sega that claimed the Saturn was 64-bit by adding 32+32 together when they first launched it in Japan (though they quickly dropped the idea).

    I bought one late in its life when it was very cheap. I liked it. Beast on the lynx put the amiga original to shame game wise. I also liked gauntlet too. I originally had the game gear. The game gears sprite shearing was very off putting - unlike the lynxs almost unlimited sprite capabilities

    One of the things that made many consoles of this era (including the Genesis and SNES) powerful was the ability to change the video chip registers on a per-scanline basis. So many amazing graphical effects were done via that mechanism.

      I don't know about Doom, but it seems like it could have run Wolfenstein 3D in theory, as there were talks to port the game to the Lynx but development was never started as a contract was never agreed on and signed. In the years since, homebrew developers have also managed to get raycasting engines to run on the hardware.

    A little tidbit i got out of reading the developers manual, the games run from internal memory and not from the cartridge, that one is essentially used as a ROM disk. According to the developers manual the BIOS even should have support to load from tape. One downside of the carts was that none of them had any way to save data, so no complex RPGs where ever done for the system sadly. One cool thing i remember tough, if you have Chips Challenge, my most favorite Lynx title by the way, enter MAND as a password. 😁

    Not sprites, framebuffer-blitter. Fundamentally different from tilemap and sprite based consoles where the actual line pixel data is composed during the line output. Including the sprite-only NeoGeo. More similar to next generation consoles like Saturn, 3Do and Playstation. Some similarity to 16bit home computers.

    The Lynx was an amazing console, and unlike a lot of other failed consoles, had a surprisingly high quality library too. It would've been really cool to see Atari release a home console based on the same tech - just scale everything up in it a little bit and give it a beefier CPU and it would've trounced the competition (at least technically), especially if they got the jump on them in terms of release date. Instead, we waited for ages and got the Jaguar - a massively disappointing machine given what came before it. If anyone's looking to try the Lynx, I highly recommend playing Xenophobe as an entry-point. It's by far the best version of the game, including the arcade original, and holds up pretty well even today!

    for people who are committed enough to collect for this console it probably won't be enough to discourage them from picking it up but it's unfortunate how badly the sound was mangled in that otherwise rock-solid port of ninja gaiden iii. the nes game, like the two before it, features some of the most excellent music in the system's library. an attempt was made to port the same compositions to the lynx version but they're out of tune, lifeless and barely recognizable

    Now I don't KNOW the reason for the chip names per se But Atari's tradition was to name their chipsets after partners. Like spouses or girl/boyfriends of the engineers. So the chips would carry on their person names into the production version. Like Stella for the original 70s VCS. The Amiga was designed by former Atari engineers, so all _its_ chips had person names too. Agnes, Paula, and Denise. That way they "could talk about their project in public without fearing corporate espionage"

    I had a Lynx II back in the day. I had a lot of fun with it, but I did have an issue where perspiration would get in the function buttons (not the action buttons) and short them, so they seemed pressed all the time, and then I would spray it with electrical cleaner, and/or let it dry for a long time to get the buttons to work right again. I read that the Lynx was actually quite profitable for Atari, and they were determined to use the money they made from it to become successful in the home console market again with the Jaguar. Some feel that if they had concentrated on the Lynx, and perhaps a successor, they might have stuck around longer. I did have a Jaguar also, though, and I had a lot of fun with some of the games on that as well.

    Just to add some more confusion it's also not fair to call the 68000 a 16-bit processor as it's 32-bit internally. So if you can call the CPU in the SNES 16-bit then the 68000 is 32-bit, or the CPU in the SNES is 8-bit and the 68000 is 16-bit. In other words you could argue that the Megadrive is a 32-bit console ;)

    • @daishi5571
      @daishi5571 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree, and most CPU's have parts that don't fit one description. I think you have to look at how the CPU communicates with it's other resources. In the case of the 68000 it has an external 16-bit bus which has to break all 32-bit information into two parts and move them separately. SNES CPU is interesting it takes an 8-bit CPU (6502 family) adds on a 16-bit instruction set mode (like the Apple IIGS) but retains the 8-bit external bus. Here's another console that Is mislabeled as 32-bit, the FM Towns Marty as it uses the 386SX which has a 16-bit bus.
