Great footage. I often saw the APT as I lived beside the WCML at the time. Just a tiny bit more investment and we would’ve had our own Pendolinos and 20 years earlier. The centre power cars were an issue for servicing passengers, 2 sets of buffets etc. An APT with the power cars in the driving trailer maybe? Similar to the HSTs may have been the next move…?
Hopefully one day we'll get to see the preserved APT-P at Crewe back on the mainline again soon...
Was my local airport. So sad to see it go. :(
Good
thats more than likely my grandad pulling that hst through at the end there.
Remember them well, It's ashame such a foundation airline is no longer with us.
Thats not the class THATS THE NUMBER Im sicl of writing these comments
Excellent acceleration of the 8 coach train. Reminds me of how a 33 would shoot out of Waterloo with it's train presumably on the Waterloo to Salisbury service (I thought that they were the Push Pull service to Weymouth but apparently the Class 33s shuttled between Bournemouth & Weymouth only in that case, the motive power being a 4REP for the 4TC carriages between London Waterloo & Bournemouth ).
What year was this? I remember being at an airshow at Filton in the '80s and the Concorde flypast was the loudest thing I'd ever experienced.
The best train on the video the advanced passenger train
Ah! The PROPER railway with REAL InterCity trains; not like the ubiquitous Suburban trains on InterCity routes of today. Excellent APT-P footage; Kit Spackman would have been proud of that shot. Well done!
Hard to believe thats coming from what was a 47.
Hi Adrian. I am emailing from 'The Gadget Show' on Channel 5 - we'd love to use a few seconds of the footage - do you own the full copyright? Thank you, Elena
Nice shots of those trains especially the APT. I was on that train during many of its test runs between 1979 and 1985 including those at highest speed. I've seen very little footage of the train in full flight (especially the lightweight one with the short formation) which is a massive shame. Footage on board would have been interesting because we had very few comforts on there - I remember a fortnight with only cup a soup and the likes of jam sandwiches to keep us going from the 5-30am start to 8pm when we left the depot (Glasgow Shields, Euston Down Side Carriage Shed or one of the carriage sheds at Crewe) having changed the batteries in our equipment on the roof. Time machine please!
Wow amazing to see a BR Class 81 a model Hornby really need to retool along with MK4 coaches and DVT MK4 the and retool the BR 86! and they need to tool the BR Class 89 it's shocking there isn't a 00 gauge one yet expect Silver Fox models kit built I am not hacking one of my BR Class 47s just for the chassis! Hornby retooled the BR Class 87 in 2016/17 and a newly tooled iconic APT-P BR Class 370 which is due to arrive this winter 2020/2021. This must be limited on TH-cam in armature recorded footage of the APT-P. This is the only one I've seen with audio with the tilting mechanism love this!
The apt looks fantastic the best train that great Britain ever bult
Best we ever built- agree!! And built during the worst Political Party in Governmental power during most of the APT-E & APT-P development time. That's mainly why it failed.
loving your footage ------- apt-p tilting is fantastic , if only it went into production . thankyou adrian for the share
Great to see the APT in a shorter formation. Look like one full set of 7 plus 3 of another set!
Yes, must have been another APT-P Test Run in that case. (I went on one Euston - Preston circa late 1980 - superb!).
Such a bustling time on BR nice to see a Rat at work too. Only the Watford Gap section was shut in December 85. Boo.
thats a 710 emd
EMD 645
The 710 is used in the class 66 and 67.
More trains should be retrofitted like this. Excellent video.
Miss those engines
This looks like Transwede c/s.
Beautiful sound.
Wow love this! Millennials today don't realise how quiet modern planes are compared to these!
Great AC br blue footage. Them were the days....the WCML heyday.
When you could whisk thru the Lune Gorge sat in an orange bucket seat😃
A long time ago
Those 73/200's were noisy little buggers !
Very nice video, please have also a look at my channel and it would be nice if you also would subscribe it.
This is amazing footage. Brings back some memories watching!!! I remember when lulsgate was a strip of tarmac in a field, a portacabin and one bog!!!!
Im 17 but then you compare it to these days The terminal is massive compared to back then how time flies by
The days of proper railways 😎👍🏽🎉
I was in the RAF when Concord 002 landed at RAF Fairford and my unit from RAF Bicester(71 MU -AES&TF)was there to clear up an aircraft accident(Hercules C130)which crashed on take off beside the runway,we had a week to clear the wreckage before Concord landed,we did it just in time! so the unit was allowed to stay to watch the historic event.
Fantastic. I was there with my dad quite likely somewhere in that video, will have to study it a bit more. I still have our Special Entry passes for the day. Shame there's no sound as there was quite a cheer when the plane left the ground! Thanks for posting it.
I remember watching this live on telly at the time. We only had b/w back then and all I remember is worrying how much smoke it was making. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Great to see this Adrian. My grandad was there at the time, as an employee of BAC. He took some photos from very similar vantage points.
was filmed in 1984
I thought 56058 and 56063 were painted into original railfreight grey in 1985! I think that livery first appeared @march 1985. Correct me if i'm wrong! My memories fading a bit ere! Great memories there all the same cheers :)
What year was this filmed? Weird seeing 58s and Peaks together
Some great footage -thanks
lovelly video call me sentimental for my home town but i do love Bristol Airport
Me too sounds so stateside!
Nice to see class 87s with the cross arm pantographs, suited them much better than the high speed ones.
Really, that was great stuff. I was around in 1984 catching all those numbers in the Bletchley area. I never forget how busy it was and how enjoyable it was to see so much different traction on the line.
Many thanks!
I was 2 years old when this was shot awesome train and one of a kind
My Dad was on that plane. He was an engineer at Rolls-Royce engine division. We have his ticket - he wrote the date and time of take-off on it. Also, I lived next door to Filton airfield at the time
Thank you for the email glad you like the Film
Sat on my dads shoulders just aged 6 at the time by the traffic lights
superb, but remind me, what were HSTs doing on the WCML in 1984?
pnemickey1 - HST's would have been doing a daily XC service from the South West to either Manchester and/or Liverpool 👍🏽😊
London Euston to Chester and Holyhead as well?
HI Rob hope it brought back some good memories. One thing the weather hasn't changed for that time of year :-) Shame Filton has now gone
Enjoyable all the way through, nice to see the 87s running with their original cross arm pantographs.
