Ive had a few books with lots of water damage and mold but other than that i love them.
I thought she’s Japanese + Korean parents ? ❤
What do you mean by you’re not compassionate? Also I loved this book as well.
Thank you Thank You for saying what you said in the first 6 minutes of this video because I believe a lot of people went into this book expecting rainbows and unicorns with a little bit sadness in it. You described this book beautifully - makes me want to re-read it for the 4th time. :) Love the video
I love how you selected a different colour for each event, like pink for caring and loving. I initially put only blue because the book is blue and I didn't wanna ruin the aesthetic but then I ran out of blue and used other colours. But I love your idea and will use it in the future ❤ i loved this book more than words, I've read it twice, 7 years apart and did not forget one single thing and even knowing what was about to happen, i still ugly cried at the end. I particularly loved the "Dear Comrade" chapter because it's such an accurate and heartbreaking depiction on the depression and grief that comes with losing someone who we love 😢
no idea who you are i just saw the way you marked your book and clicked instantly
Just tore through this bad boy in 4 days and I feel like zombie. I already assumed what happened in the last few pages was going to happen so I was prepared. Like, there just wasn't any other direction this story was going to take imo. I wasn't prepared for the situation the car and just how graphic and unnecessarily cruel Hanya was going to be with the brutality of ot. The fact that all he had to go on was a birthmark is just... Ugh. My poor, beautiful boys 😭 Masterpiece. Wish I'd never read it though 😂
Definitely justified in your feelings! Hahah
I just finished this book and the effect it had on me was honestly visceral. You're the first person on youtube to pinpoint what is so special about this book and I couldn't agree more. I didn't think a work of fiction could change me that way A Little Life did. Even if the characters were fictional, they brought me to look at people in a different light. You can never know the extent of someone's story and the weight they carry on their shoulders. As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, this book had a tight grip on my heart - the way Hanya described Jude's feeling of hopelessness and his outlook on life is something a lot of people relate too, even if his story is revolting and has no similarities with ours. Amazing review, thank you ❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m glad this book has as much weight for you as it does for me. It’s such an important message. <3
I discovered thriftbooks yesterday and bought my first 3. Super obsessed, kinda scared because ill have to budget and be careful not to spend too much on them lol
Totally relate hahaha
You seem like you'd be great to b around
Thank you!
I super love this video! Been looking for someone who ordered books there that in acceptable and good condition because just like you I love battered books. I love other people’s annotations too. Glad that I found you!!! I’m not really into perfect or new conditions too. They’re too bland for me lol 😄
You are so kind!!! 🥹 Thank you so much for your sweet words! Beat up books >>> new copies, any day!
I love the smell of old books
Me too!!
I have a paperback version of Jane Austen’s Emma from 1964 and it smells like vanilla
Hi sister I am looking to buy book from this website this video help me so much I can’t explain . May Allah bless you
I’m so glad I could help! And thank you for the blessings!
i adore this book so much and hearing my thoughts from someone else in a well-articulated way was great! i'm also thinking of getting a tattoo about this book but i can't decide if i want to get your tattoo(my favorite chapter as well) or x = x. anyways loved your review!!
thank you so much!! i’m glad you liked it! i love either one of those ideas!
In the different quotes in the book it gives me a perspective on what is important in life. I had got it for Christmas and will read it soon
yes, exactly! i hope you love it too!
I think you’re the first person I’ve seen talk positively about this book 😅
probably! 😂😂
I got a kick out of you liking really used books, and how you buy acceptable rated and good rated books. It was adorable how you were so thrilled. It’s all the things I dislike!!! I always look for very good and like new books. There’s a book out there for everyone!!!
Haha there really!! And thank you!
Thank you so much for this review. I love how you mentioned in the beginning you need to be in a good space before reading and I totally agree. This book is absolutely amazing, my favorite thus far and how Hanya literally turned the heat up :) I've seen so many review about how it's basically trauma porn and there's no plot and opinions are valid, but I just feel like thats surface level, because the underlying message is just so much more. I can honestly ramble on more, but again thank you for your review.
Thank you for your kind words!! :) I agree, there’s a lot more to the plot than just the bad things in Jude’s life!
I'm so glad to find someone on TH-cam that likes used. books and cracked spines. I feel embarrassed to show my book collection because all my books are thrifted, with brown pages and most books with cracked spines because other people have thrifted books but books that looks new.
yes!! you are welcome here! all of my books have 50¢ stickers from the thrift store still on them! 😂 no shame in the book game!!
OMG!! The moment you showed your tattoo, my jaw dropped, ever since I've finished this book, I've been dying to get 'The Happy Years' or 'Jude & Willem' tatted on me. This book will forever be my favourite. It has taught me so much about life, about friendship, that I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Yes!! There’s so much to learn from this book and having a reminder of it has been perfect for me! It’s also a great plug for Hanya because I get asked about it all of the time! 😂
All my books look brand new because I try my best to keep them almost the same way I first got them, it just pains me when I see a book in bad shape, maybe because I don't have access to so many books and the ones I have are like my babies Some of those books might as well have had previous owners who were just like me and kept them in good shape until they decided to give it away or sell it
It’s all about reading the way that you see best! Some of them had no wear marks at all on the corners and spine, like they were brand new but are labeled as used. Strange, but I’m not complaining.
I personally think books that look older or well loved add character
Me too! I love when you can see that a book has been read and used. :)
Omg I have the exact same tattoo!! I got mine on the back of my lower calf tho, also my first tattoo :D Love this book so much
DUDE! that’s awesome!! tattoo twins!! :-)
By the last chapter, I just wanted it to be over. I don't know why this book is so recommended. I am one of those people who read it because it was so talked about. I wouldn't say I LOVED it. But ofcourse, it was well written, for a novel where there is not particular time period that they are following. But it was just horrifying. In some scenes, I was like "wow, is she making this up?!?". And surprisingly, I only cried during happy moments, and the "sad" ones just made me irritated and mad. I would highly recommend God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, it also deals with difficult topics, but the writing is out of the world, I cried while reading that.
thank you for your opinion and book recommendation! i am adding it to my goodreads list now! :-)
You don't look bad at all!
thank you 🥺🥺 i was not feeling it this day LOL
Love Simon is also on Hulu
The Hate U Give movie is out and it’s on Hulu.
Are they fake books from India or something?? These deals are insane!!
i still don’t get it!! $3.99 for a basically new paperback?? 🤯
Great video!
thank you!!
I loved your review and the tatoo!
thanks so much!!!
thank you so much for this video!!! i’m about to order from their app and this video helped so much :) this is an edit but i’m watching this now and i was actually just about to buy “the stand” lol i love stephen king
yay!! thanks for watching!
I hated it, literally just trauma porn and what makes it worse is she admitted to not doing any research on how trauma affects you. It also definitely needs trigger warnings especially when the description of self harm and sexual assault are so long and graphic.
i respect your opinion and have heard the same complaint from several people. i agree that it needs some kind of warning on the cover. it kind of freaks me out when i see it in stores because people have no idea what they’re getting into. i give people a huge warning when i pass off my copy for someone to borrow.
She said she didn’t do any research on that subject but what if the character of Jude is based on herself and her own experiences? Do you think during her interviews she should just unveil all of her own personal traumas if that were the case? I personally went through multiple suicide attempts, self harm, and physical abuse. And I don’t have anything wrong with the book, I think the way she wrote this book was so powerful and impactful and she put my darkest moments into words. Just because you don’t relate to it doesn’t mean that other people that have been through trauma won’t relate to it.
And this January, we are finally having a new book from her! I am so excited. Nice, nice discussion btw.
wasn’t that the greatest news ever?! i never preorder anything but i just had to secure one :) and thank you!!
a little life is sitting on my bookshelf and i’m so excited to read it
you’ll love it!
Literally my No.1 novel of all time.
yes!!
you speaking about people reading their books almost closed (just so they dont break the spine) is literally me😂😂. my books usually stay in the same condition that i got them in even after i finish them. great video :).
yes! just about everyone in my family does the same thing 😂 and thank you!
thank you for this review! others that i watched hadn't ordered any "acceptable" quality books, and/or were very particular about how their books looked. i agree that worn books are much better lol
You should check out my gothic romance novel '40,000 Words'. It follows Adelaide Parabellum as the arrival of poems from beyond the grave causes her to recollect how she had met a stranger at a pond eight years prior. '40,000 Words' can be found by searching '40,000 Words Nicholas Leonard' on Amaz0n. I hope this brief synopsis has interested you.
glad i'm not the only one that hates hardcovers and loved cracked spinesss
the more used = the more loved 🥰
first
So detailed! Much appreciated 😊
thank you!!
I love thriftbooks, but yeah their grading is confusing sometimes, a good condition book will look flawless and sometimes a like new book will be in just good condition. I guess multiple people grade them and everyone has different standards so that's probably why but Thriftbooks is still awesome!
i agree, it must be different people’s opinions that make such a vast grading system. glad you like Thriftbooks too!!
Love it!! I go on Thriftbooks all the time, and I love getting used books too! Some books I’ve gotten in “acceptable” look brand new to me!
yes! i was so surprised by some of the copies that i got! definitely will be my go to website now!! :-))
