SPL XVI, RBY OU trends/developments: are we going to see SNORLAXLESS TEAMS? Big fella under attack!
Hello, this is the final video on the commencement of SPL 16. This time we take a quick glance at Snorlaxless teams and why they found fertile ground.
Amaranth's post gives a lot of insight on the archetype. There are some underlying reasons for the evolution of how the game is being played. Mostly, Snorlax has a target on its head and things have been this way for quite some time.
Attorney marcoasd defends his client: SNORLAX. I believe RBY OU is all about the eternal return of staples, so be ready to hear some thoughts from the perspective of a conservative voice.
Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow. Generation 1. RBY overused. Smogon Premier League. Always praise lord helix, Venomoth sweeps over Dragonite who misses Hyper Beam and gets demoralized.
Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Yellow. RBY OU, RBY overused. Gen1 competitive battling. Smogon, Pokemon Perfect, Smogon Premier League 16, Smogon Premier League XVI, SPL. Pokemon Online, Pokemon Showdown, RBY OU ladder, RBY OU Tournament scene, RBY OU Tournament players. Retro, vintage, nerd, gaming. Tauros, Snorlax, Starmie, Chansey, Exeggutor, Alakazam, Rhydon, Zapdos, Cloyster, Gengar, Jynx, Slowbro, Jolteon. RBY OU metagame. Moltres, Articuno, Persian, Porygon, Victreebel, Golem. S4 teams, normal-types and psychic-types rule the game. Matchups, predictions/ risky plays and RNG determine who is going to win. Get RNG'd, get RBY'd. Get slept, frozen and fully paralyzed. Miss crucial moves. 255 miss, 255 Selfdestruct miss. Body Slam spammer. Ice Beam spammer. Clamp and Wrap all day. Stall teams are spamming Rest, Softboiled and Recover all day but all of a sudden Tauros comes in and gets a critical hit and you're done.
Yolo Hyper Beam gets the clutch critical hit, oh no I blame luck. Amaranth, Kaz, Heroic Troller, Hipmonlee, Nicole, Sceptross, Serpi, Felix, gefährlicher random, user of cheats, Chuva de perereca, Nicole, Don Eduardo, Carapinga, Kenix, ABR, Excal, Hipmonlee will change the future of the tier like Kaiba. Ishizu shuts the hell up.

What rule set are you playing
Atlantic. Theoretically it allows 4 Mishra's Workshop, but we don't use more than 1 anyway. We try to keep decks more legal as possible across multiple rulesets. To put it short: 1 Strip Mine, 1 Mishra's Workshop, Mana Burn on, Fallen Empires allowed.
@ that is one that I favor in the modern interpretation too. Very nice matches. Good players
@@Leroyantithesis Thank you! We like it too.
Heck yes love old magic
Awesome
I really like this deck… explain the copy artifacts vs animate dead? Why not both?
Copy Artifact is much better as a card and it's on color (black is just a splash). Animate Dead can't copy Sol Ring, Moxes, Chaos Orb. However, I wouldn't look at it this way - you can theoretically play both, like you said. I like burn spells because they are proactive and give inevitability to the deck. Animate Dead does absolutely nothing when it's in your starting hand, so it doesn't pair well with Timetwister and Wheel of Fortune. You need to fill your graveyard first. It's ok in UB lists, but I believe URB to be better and also UWB is better.
@ yes, but trikes need to be multiplied… if they are killed then the copy artifacts have to choose alternate targets. My concern would be after sideboarding… I run 3 divine offerings… so I like what you have here but an additional spell or 2 in the animate category is like having 6 trikes… you have to have them because robots has become so strong in the format that people have started sideboarding against them is my thought.
@@Leroyantithesis I think an early Su-Chi followed by copies is the nastiest thing this deck can do. Well, artifacts are very important and I like Dust to Dust in general, not only vs robots. That's another thing too: Swords to Plowshares and Dust to Dust exile your creatures (ok, Triskelion can protect itself but that's just 4 targets). Even though Divine Offering is more common at the moment. All in all, I think we can state that you want some copies of Animate Dead (like, a couple) in your sideboard. Which makes a lot of sense. The maindeck, I think it's fine the way it is.
@90sTCGgaming su-chi is a weird card for me… I can’t wrap my head around playing without mana burn.
@@Leroyantithesis I think it's ok even with mana burn. Even if it hurts sometimes.
I like your perspective on the list. I would rank differently but it doesn’t mean I disagree with you. Playing style has allot to do with preferences. I do believe the moxen are stronger but I think they need to be played together. Having 1 in a deck bs having 1 lotus or 1 library of Alexandra for me diminishes the power of each card… however if you have multiple in the deck and draw 1… then yes, that 1 card on the board state is better but it is a factor of 6 fold better because anyone playing all 5 moxen is playing a sol ring too… make sense? For me… the one card that absolutely finishes a game is mindtwist. People splash black just for that card and there is a “gentleman’s format” just to eliminate mindtwist and LOA. If that card gets played, someone is going to lost most of the time… it sucks to get out of that hole!!!
It's amazing how I can 100% agree on everything you just said. I always say: Mind Twist is the best card in the game, and Demonic Tutor is the second best card in the game because that's the one that puts Mind Twist in your hand. Well, if it's not the best it' at least the most unfair. Yeah I know about gentleman, but I don't like them. LoA is okaish when 4 Strip Mines are allowed and Wheel, Timetwister and Balance are just as bad as Mind Twist. So my gentlemen rules would be that you can't play these 4 cards on turn 1.
@ yep… for sure. The formats I grew up with don’t allow 4 strip mines so I generally don’t play with it but I board in plenty of land destruction because that’s generally what my play group was like and I’m a mono black player at heart so… sinkhole is in most of my decks anyways. We never played with chaos orbs growing up either. This has been an entirely new thing for me in this last few years seeing that card be played. When I was a kid you would get made fun of for playing that card… it was considered stupid… and the rules that are used now are not the rules that were used then. I don’t dislike it… it’s just different
@@Leroyantithesis Yeah, I don't like the idea of flipping orbs in tournament environment.
Cool stuff. Viewers like this game + I have always loved GB and Pokemon TCG. Result? All kinds of longplays coming. Pokemon TCG 1 and 2 (english patch).
This was such a fun game to watch the bigger kids play when I was little lol
Deck seems really interesting. There is a small oldschool community in my city and I'll be building this for my first old school deck. What are some low hanging fruit upgrades (cards that are 15 bucks or less) that could be done? My budget is not big but I would like to slowly upgrade this deck over time.
Manabase is priority number 1: Chronicles City of Brass (are Chronichles legal where you play?).
@90sTCGgaming Yes, any reprint with old frame and original art is legal. Thank you for the tip. Playset? Cutting two plains and two islands? Any other (probably more expensive) suggestions?
@@Sardanapulus You really want to play Lions on turn 1. On the other hand there are times when you want triple blue, especially post sideboard. I used UUU for Energy Flux plus Counterspell, for example. Also 4 City of Brass are going to hurt you a bit. Well, +4 City -2 Island -2 Plains looks ok. Just give it a try and pay attention on whether you are ok with how many times you have turn 1 white. Upgrades? Dust to Dust is a nice SB card and its price is ok. After that, it's hard to tell. There are different paths and priorities. Mana Drain is doable and it can be thrown in, but after that there you have a barrier. I'd go for Tundras. You can also use Demonic Tutor and Mind Twist, but you have to improve the manabase too. Moat is more expensive and it somewhat cuts Lions out (possibly SB card, not worth the price). City in a Bottle and The Abyss are some other expensive SB card (one or the other of the 3 depending on whether you are using Su-Chi or Serendib) Su-Chi over Serendib is another route, but I like Serendib a lot and I'd buy other cards. Chaos Orb is a good investment: it's colorless! I'm not even mentioning Library of Alexandria, and Power 9 in general.
@90sTCGgaming Yes its crazy how fast it goes from an €80 deck to a €800 (+++) deck. I think i'm just going for the city of brass for now and see how it goes from there 🙂 Thank you!
@@Sardanapulus Yeah, there's a huge gap. You're welcome, see you around!
i think the guide sheds insight but also laughable in some spaces. like how can ball lightning be better than circle of protection: red? and shatterstorm is not on the list? and stasis?
I'd rank Stasis roughly in the post-top 50 area. That's where most combo cards are, but things like Winter Orb see play outside of Prison archetypes. Stasis is one peculiar deck, my top 50 cards in Old School see play across multiple decks. And this is true for most honorable mentions too. This doesn't mean Stasis is a bad card! I think Shatterstorm is heavily featured in this channel! However, it's a sideboard card and it's not a card for every deck. Ball Lightning is a maindeck card, and one unique creature. Circle of Protection: Red is a sideboard card, again. Also, players using red should have counterplays. At the end of the day it's all about having those dual lands and full playsets of everything... but there are counterplays indeed.
I agree that ball lightning is a main deck card but not very used one anymore… it’s a bery specific one that needs help from the green giant growth play to be valuable with kird apes and all that… like as a 2 of in a fantasy zoo deck. The reason is that everyone is pretty much main decking red for bolts or white at this point and there are also allot of first strike creatures in the format being played that simply eat ball lightnings…
@@Leroyantithesis Which format are you playing? That's the mother of all questions! Ball Lightning likes Berserk, that's greedy but it can do great things. Kird Ape wants more forests in the deck. Other than that, Ball Lightning looks like a monored card to me. Monored + dual lands for sideboard cards.
@90sTCGgaming I play a format called Type 0. It has been around since the early 2000’s. There is a really big old school scene in my city
Library of Alexandria is commonly considered the tenth of the Power Nine. When paired with Candelabra of Tawnos, it is insanely powerful!
That's a brutal combo! Would you consider using it in The Deck? With Maze of Ith as well. Yeah, Library is the weak link of this list. I mentioned it in the description. However I think that Sol Ring is at least #10 and Mind Twist (and possibly Demonic Tutor) are also better. Hard to tell. P9 should be at least power 10 indeed! Top 16 cards are THAT good.
i thought sol ring was the tenth of the P9😮
I just finished building an ale deck within the last couple of days. This list is relevant. For example, I did indeed choose both moxes, mind twist and sol ring over black lotus. I had to cut 3 cards and lotus was one. It’s for a 2v2 tournament. I have a team mate to think about. And no, I’m not playing loa in this build.
Yeah, that's the main purpose of all my lists. I make a lot of them because I hope they can eventually help making some clarity when building decks or simply buying cards.
¡Que divertido que fue jugar a este lindo juego! Gracias por tus vídeos ✌🏻🔥
Is Mana Crypt legal in the OS format?
It's not. Mana Crypt was first printed in 1995 as a promo, Old School is 93/94: from Alpha to Fallen Empires (Swedish is Alpha-The Dark).
Cool, thanks for the response. I never thought OS included Fallen Empires (probably because there aren't really any playable cards in the set. besides maybe hymn to tourach) Yeah I knew mana crypt was an old promo but didn't know what year it was "released"
@@furrys.1304 You're welcome! Yeah, Fallen Empires aren't groundbreaking but there are actually some cards. HTT really makes Mono Black and Order of The Ebon Hand is a significant upgrade for Black Knight because it can attack into Mishra's Factory. Order of Leitbur is not as important because white has more ways to get over Factory. Derelor and Aeolipile sometimes see play. Goblin Grenade is also a good card and Deep Spawn is a good choice for reanimator decks. Initiates of the Ebon Hand can make an appearance in Monoblack.
I used to run order of ebon hand in my old mono black necro deck way back in the days of "type 2" I really like Mindstab Thrull too. I think it's kind of overlooked sometimes but I don't think it would really be useful in OS.
@90sTCGgaming my group is quite old and we use FE and the reason is because this is where Magic started to change to the block system afterwards and underwent major changes. Ice age presented major differences in art to established cards and the typeface was changed. Most importantly to us, the sideways and circled “T” tap symbol was removed after fallen empires. For all of these reasons, this is why my group considered FE to be a part of the original sets and everything after it to be fundamentally different.
Ciao, certamente! Noi piccoli dobbiamo darci una mano.
Good list. Loa and ancestral recall are my top 2. I’ve always enjoyed drawing cards and as we all know there is not many ways of drawing cards in 93-94. Library turn 1 unanswered is usually gg.
Yeah, I mentioned that in the description because I'm fully aware that Library at 15 is the weak link in my list. It's pretty much silent late in the game, but it can steal games and giving up on a land that produces colored mana is a very reasonable cost. So, it's the dark horse for high ranks. I think, however, that Mind Twist is better and so is Demonic Tutor. Also because I like to play my spells, I'm not a control player.
Also forgot to mention 4 Strip Mines etc.
Like black lotus it's effect really depends on the timing you get to play it. Drawing a Lotus late game probably isn't going to do much for you.
@@furrys.1304 Yeah, it can be pretty much useless if you don't have spells with X in their cost. Enabling turn 1 Timetwister, Wheel of Fortune or a big Mind Twist is disgusting though. Very hard to judge.
“this is my list, so i make the rules” 😤🤯🥶
It sounds arrogant at first glance but it couldn't be otherwise!
@ oh no, i’m agree with you. maybe i would switch time walk and sol ring, but your top 10 is right
GOD BLESS YOU! I've been trying to remember this game for the past 30 some odd years and now I've finally found it!
Nice
Did the guy on the right have a stress management issue? Why are they fidgeting their cards nonstop?
That's me! Well, I can stop that tomorrow. I won't do that in the next video! Pro players do that to hide information, so people do that to emulate pros. People overdo that, and I overdo even more. However, I have to admit it has grown into a vice over time!
@90sTCGgamingGotcha! Did not know! I do shuffle my hand once after I draw per turn. That's about it
Ahh yes! Triple s ; savannah, serra, a sychic venom....

Exttemely goofy list with many puzzling choices. I never seen anyone use atog in 93/94 except as a one-of in arrtifacy heavy decks. I have never seen anyone use witch hunter or royal assasin in 93/94 as they are expensive and useless given the metagame. I did aee people use those in casual kotchen table games way back i n the day. But not anymore. Also, White Knight and Order Of Leitbur are strictly worse than Black Knight and Order Of The Ebon Hand, because Ebon hand and Black K ight are immune to both swords and terror. There are many orher weird choicea on the list and many carda which are better and more useful than stuff included here. There are ma y other cards on the list whoch I've never seen anyone use in 93/94.
Well, it's ok to disagree. I'd like to hear more about those creatures I had overlooked. Atog does appear in top8 monored decklists, full playset. IMO there are just about 15 creatures that see play consistently, top 50 has to include non tier-1 decks like monowhite. Black Knights are better cards than white knights. I mean, I am a MonoBlack player! However, they are supporting actors in monoblack; White Knights are more important for their archetype and take advantage from cards like Crusade and Army of Allah.
@90sTCGgaming here's a few which I'd consider better than some.of the creates on the list. Derelor - poor.man's juzam., 4/4 for 4 CMC. Drawback isn't too bad. Sindbad - Not a staple but does see use in some decks. Drawing cards is always good. Verdure Enchantress - see above. I liked your inclusion of Swamp Kibg. How about Jacques Le Vert? A 3/4 for 4 CMC who buffs your green creatures? Zephyr Falcon - A useful card, threatening if given an unstable mutation
@@skooblyooblydoobly1766 Oh yeah, I forgot about Derelor! Also because I don't own the card. That's a common trait among creatures you named! It deserves a slot even though the drawback is pretty bad so it needs specific builds where black is a splash. Sindbad is ok. However I'm looking for creatures that put a clock on my opponent. Verdurant Enchantress, I considered that card so it's legit in top 50. But ultimately enchantress (as a deck) isn't good enough in Premodern and OS has an even more limited cardpool. Jaques Le Vert looks dignified, but 3 colours make it inconvenient. And boosting defense doesn't help much, I would like something that boosts attack. Zephyr Falcon is pretty bad tbh, if Flying Men couldn't make it Falcon has no chance. Also Primordial Ooze is a better target for Unstable Mutation. To put it short, I might have regrets over the first three cards on this list.
But, where is Tim?
Not a fan of the card to be honest!
Good list but you are certainly missing Lighting Bolt. One of the best... still sees play in both OS and current formants like Legacy and Modern.
Lightning Bolt is definitely a great card, and monored is almost always a viable deck in any format. I can see where you're coming from! However, one copy doesn't have a great impact on a game. At least compared to the other cards. That's the rationale behind it.
@90sTCGgaming bolt is def better than control magic
Hi, I don't agree with zoo and reanimator in the list. I think Gro-Atog and oath decks are stronger, in my opinion. Good video.
Hello! What do you mean by Oath decks? I think I included them in the Terrageddon category, stating that I like the GW TerraOath/Ponza version (Sphere of Resistance) even better than the one with creatures! Zoo is a deck that is very well liked right now, and it's chipping away at Sligh's usage. Honestly I don't know Gro-Atog decks enough because they aren't much used here but yeah, Reanimator decks have some consistency issues!
Serendib didn't show up 😅
DND - Did Not Dress! HAHA!
15:00 forgot to pay 2 for Sol Ring. I knew that was going to happen!
Reprints of Oubliette say the creature phases out, which wouldn't trigger Triskelion's ETB. Do Old School rules ignore the errata?
You are correct! My bad. Oubliette was errata'd and it's a different case. Most Old School community play under these updated rules. So Triskelion would just phase back in with whatever amount of counters it had. There are still, however, hardcore players who use the old rules entirely.
Run crusade. Do it.
Great video!!!!
I really dig your Top 5!
Ciao molto bravo e professionale, c’è un modo per poterti contattare??
Ciao, grazie! Certamente: 90stcgandgaming@gmail.com
I love the Army of Allah
One of the best and most unique pokemon sets to ever exist. Very low supply too. Will be worth alot more one day.
Yeah, it's great. That's quite the opposite of what I wish, though. Trading card games are meant to bring people together, and that's why the game was a big thing back in the 90s. In this video a tell a story about a seller from my hometown (a big town, not even a city) buying 12 boxes and selling out in 2 hours. People were coming back, possibly telling their friends. That's the good part of the hobby. Right now, it's only about the money.
You have only one card to dig/draw/modify topdeck mode flow: braingeyser. How are singleton copies in the sideboard any effective?
I look at this the other way around: the sideboard tells you a lot about a deck. If you see a sideboard like this one, you can tell that sideboard cards are just an extra. Certain cards, I don't want to draw them in multiple copies: if I draw them I'm happy, if I don't I just execute my plan and I think I can live without them.
Repentant Blacksmith is also very good in a Mono W. Usually 2 main and 2 in the sideboard. The Chronicles version is very cheap.
Yeah. I don't like the power/toughness though. Maybe I will change my mind after being swept by Earthquake over and over again.
It depends on the Format, but being immune to bolts or blocking Trolls all day can be relevant
Awesome! Need those Army of Allahs. What condition are you going for? Because I think prices seem a little low.
1 Played 9.32€, 3 Moderately Played 11.21€ each. Well, I'm not actually going after them. Maybe I should. The fact is that I'm assembling/disassembling a whole lot of decks so I don't plan on buying everything.
For those of you wondering why blue/white control is an archetype to this day…
Fallen Empires is absolutely part of the Old School or 93/94 card pool.
I 100% agree. That's factual! However here in Italy Ravenna Rules (Swedish with reprints) is the most common format. Atlantic (with reprints as well) is the second option.
This is an excellent video
my favorite art from that era is earthbind my fav card to PLAY? dark ritual 😈
Definitely a nice art! There were so many of them. Dark Ritual became THAT good when it was paired with Necropotence. Then also Phyrexian Arena came out, and combo decks arose with the Urza block. In Old School, it's a double edged sword unless you're playing Mind Twist. Getting 2 for 1'd is always rough! Still an electrifying card nonetheless.
Goblins has not a bad MU against Replenish. Actually, the mix of aggression and mana denial is one of the best ways to fight Replenish
Yes, it can work especially in game 1. Not a terrible matchup, but I call it bad assuming UW Replenish is using Chill. Elves, Terrageddon and Madness are the best decks at beating UW Replenish. Goblins can get away with the win but they really need to draw Tormod's Crypt. Also Chill is devastating and Red Elemental Blast is somewhat situational because key spells are white. If you lose game 1 you are in a world of trouble. Are you playing Goblins? Red or RG? Are you having success in that matchup?
@90sTCGgaming chill is.not as good as it is against sligh due to access yo naturalize and lackey. I am a sligh player but I have played woth goblins vs parallax replenish and it feels more comfortable than sligh
@@kzelmer Yeah, I agree: Sligh is an easier matchup for Replenish compared to Goblins. Not by a landslide though. Sligh can play a land a finish with burn spells even though Goblins are more consistent overall. As far as I can understand you used RG with Port, Wasteland. Naturalize and possibly Tranquil Domain. Definitely better suited for the matchup compared to R Goblins. Yeah, Lackey is a dangerous card for those who don't play Blue Elemental Blast. And I don't think I would.
@90sTCGgaming yep, I cant think of goblins without 3 wastelands/3 ports im the current meta. Mana denial should be a big part of goblins right now. And yes, the Rg version is far superior to monored
this deck seems so good…can you show some matchup with powered decks?
Yeah, it's going to happen!
I remember the 4 different pictures of Strip Mine. OUTSTANDING sir.
Yeah! Multiple artworks are always great for both collecting and the eye.
Thank you sir. OUTSTANDING . I have been playing since 1995. These are the cards from my days. Yes I agree.
Appreciate you!
Awesome card sir.
I’ve tried granite gargoyle which isn’t bad. But I think could be better than suchi.
Granite Gargoyle is evasive but it's small, I like it better than Ironclaw Orcs and Flying Men though. Su-Chi deals 4 damage when uncontested. That's a good clock and it can overpower stuff.
Are you planning on doing commentary in the future? I'd very much enjoy that, because the games are fire but with that music it gets kinda boring.
Thanks for the feedback. I definitely plan on doing that! Right now I'm trying to post as many video as possible because the channel is new. So, I put the commentary in the description because it's quicker and I'm still learning but yeah... the short answer is yes!
Great games! I’d love to see the deck pictures too. Keep it up!
@@marcocoltelli7233 Yeah! I need to create a database of pics.
