3,000 Mile Photography Road Trip
With one month left before I leave for Asia to travel the world I wanted to do one last epic road trip to a place I've always wanted to explore. This is my road trip from Utah to Alaska.
Enjoy.

Why I shoot film, Kodachrome on the Canon AE-1

This is for my dad. Back in 2019 he gave me a gift that would end up changing my life. It was just a simple film camera but what it ended up doing for me was worth much more than the cost of a camera. Thanks dad.

    That sounds really bad. Lack of lens selection, and no manual controls? Might as well just go with an Olympus om10, and get a better lens selection. 55mm 2.2 is good… for 1950s standards.

    Another great comparison! Only thing is that Provia film really has a limited latidude and if you don't stay in that range it will blow the image also the Yashica was over exposing to many scenes in the rocks. One last thing that I have learned from shooting Provia, is that is does terrible in high contrast scenes were the highlights and shadows are too promenent. Other wise I have shot Provia film on medium format (Mamiya 7 II) and it is pretty mind blowing!

    Great Video! I really enjoyed the comparison and it has now motivated me to bring out the 1 roll of Across I have in my freg and put it on my Contax G2. I do believe that if you would have used a better film camera that might have matched the lens quality of the X100 you would have gotten even more results on the film. I am wondering if you are going to compare any of the color films because I would be very curious on the results. I also have several Fuji cameras and find that the color film simultions don't come close at all to the real film. Also, new subscriber here!

    I just inherited my canon ae-1 program. I was young when i used a film camera. So this was absolutely helpful. The only thing i need to look into, as of now, is when you load your film, do you take a few random clicks/pictures before you are ready for actual poctures? Thank you again for your video. Also, my batery tester doesn't beep. It is a consistent noise as long as i hold the button-down.

    Thank you for your time: IMHO more of these comparisons should be made. I might have missed it but it would have been intersting to know at what ISO setting the X100V was shot. I do aknowledge the great work Fuji's engineers have done with their film simulation + great sensor of the X100V. The Jpegs are great looking, without clipping the highlights. But there are two aspects which will make my choice go to film: much much more detail and micro-contrast (look at the grass blades and the tree bark on the last shot of "floating" tree) and the gradation of the skies (the X100V produces one shade and basically stays on that color when film produces many more nuances). Have a great day. Thanks

    I started with the chinon CP5, it was $30 with a 35-80 and it uses k mount lenses which makes finding lenses cheap. The brand chinon is not well known meaning these cameras sell for way cheap. The cp5 also has 2 program modes, apature priority, manual, and multiple exposure integration. If youre getting into film photography, just remember that an expensive box wont get good photos, its understanding your gear.

    Nah, Olympus om2n. And if that’s too expensive and you’re on a budget, I’d recommend the Olympus OM20/G. Simple to use and inexpensive, arguably better than the OM10. Doesn’t have the spot meter like the OM2/n but is still a good choice. If you want program there is the later later OM2 SP, or the cheaper OM40/PC

    Your figures do not add up. It is nowhere near this expensive to shoot film. You can a) bulk load rolls of b+w film; b) develop yourself (i.e. cinestill). An example, fomapan 100ft roll is like $60 and gives 18 rolls of 36 ct. cinestill monograph develops 18 rolls for $20. Minus the labour you just did 18 rolls for under $100 (even if you add in reusable cartridges, used paterson tank etc). Scan yourself and buy a simple canon cp1300 4x6 printer (under $100) and you will have saved all that money. You can buy colour film in bulk and develop it but costs a little more. Sorry mate but you are not telling an accurate story.

    Interesting comparison! Those kinds of color casts (2:27) is why I like film more. I don’t shoot film, but whenever I see film photos, it’s the colors that impress me. Fuji sooc jpegs just look too boring and digital to me. IMO Fuji should have color grading for shadows and highlights in their cameras, and they should have more film sims that changes the colors more dramatically. Classic Neg is an example of an interesting sim imo. Then again I shoot RAW so what does my opinion matter lol. :P

    Film photography (BW) on a budget: 1. Minolta SRT/X-300 incl. 50mm f/1.7 lens: 50-100 € 2. Fomapan 100: 4.50 €/roll 3. Copystand for scanning (old Enlarger + ball head mount + old DSLR + Macrolens + light panel): 400 € 4. Development kit (Light tight bag + Peterson tank + jug, thermometer): 50 € 5. Developer and Fixer (for a year) : 20 € ----- Initial costs: ca. 600 € Annual running costs (if you shoot 1 roll per week, no prints included): ca. 250 € P.S: Don't buy overhyped cameras like the AE-1. It really is not that great. I highly recommend looking into Minoltas (SRTs, X-300/370, X500/570, XG-1/2,...those are fantastic and the glass is superb). If you go medium format, look for folder cameras (e.g. Zeiss Ikon Ikontas, Nettar) or Bronicas. My top Tip: Learn how to "sunny 16"! This way you don't depend on working lightmeters and that opens a whole new world of old cameras.

  • @IceBergs
    @IceBergs 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Please stop paying 200 to 300 bucks for a Canon AE1. If you want a focal plane shutter camera get literally any Minolta SRT for literally a tenth of the cost of an AE1. I have no clue why it's sucha popular option when there's many many better options within that time period alone. I know you are just using it as an example since it was handed down to you and everything. It's a fine camera just not the first choice, especially at that price. I own one and like it, only really bought it to use the FD mount glass I've found over the years, and when I found an AE1 at a swap meet that was good condition I swooped, I think at the time it set me back like 40 bucks or so. I really really do like the included 50MM 1.4 that came with it though, it's the sharpest 50 I've ever used. It's right back like the 80's when literally the name "program" would sell the camera haha. In that price range you can get so much more value from like a Pentax LX or something
