This demonstration from the University of Georgia Extension provides valuable guidance on integrated pest management (IPM) protocols for commercial greenhouse and nursery crops. The researchers begin by outlining key IPM principles, including monitoring pest populations through regular scouting and establishing economic thresholds to determine appropriate control actions. They emphasize non-chemical controls such as physical exclusion and cultural techniques to disrupt pest lifecycles where possible. A major focus is accurate pest identification, showcased through close-up footage, to select targeted management options. For example, predatory mites are introduced to combat spider mites holistically. Monitoring with a microscope enables timely assessment of biocontrol effectiveness. Appropriate application of reduced-risk pesticides is also demonstrated, using best practices for success. Proper calibration and coverage techniques aim to minimize environmental impact while addressing pest pressure. Thorough cleaning between crops prevents cross-contamination. Record-keeping features prominently, with documentation of monitoring data, treatments, and outcomes to evaluate IPM program efficacy. This facilitates continuous improvement and fulfills regulatory requirements. By featuring hands-on demonstrations within a working greenhouse, this Extension video provides invaluable training. It serves as an exemplary model for science-based, sustainable IPM according to EPA guidelines applicable across diverse horticultural industries.

This instructional video models exemplary herbaceous perennial propagation techniques for home gardeners and small-scale producers. The host establishes Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) cultivars in grow bags - a flexible cultivation system promoting unconstrained root morphogenesis over traditional container production. Targeted amendments including stabilized bovine manures optimize the artificial growing medium, balancing physico-chemical properties to meet plant nutritional demands and support robust rhizogenic development. The use of grow bags as an extensive root pruning substrate mimics natural edaphic conditions, stimulating extensive lateral root branching and formation of a fibrous, expansive root mantle well-suited to the shallow-rooted herbaceous taxa. A low-flow drip irrigation system is installed to precisely meet crop water requirements. Inline drip tape placed at the root-zone interface facilitates controlled percolation into the rootball microhabitat. Emitters positioned in direct contact with primary and secondary roots maintain optimal substrate moisture levels and minimize drainage issues while fulfilling plant water potential needs. Clear visual and verbal explanations of installation, planting, and maintenance protocols provide novice growers with practical skills applicable across diverse horticultural operations. Standardization of procedures and best management practices exemplified in the production system are readily adaptable for home or market garden scale-up. Strategic camerawork and multimedia design effectively demonstrate techniques while engaging diverse learners. This educational resource promotes sustainable herb production through science-based methods transferable to myriad production systems and environmental conditions.
