When cast between levels 1 and 4, the damage to your initial target is only equal to your normal melee weapon attack. So if you're using a Long Sword, it still only deals 1D8 + Strength modifier damage, then deals Fire damage equal to your spell casting modifier to another creature within 5 feet of the first. It doesn't gain any additional damage until higher levels. So if cast at level 5th level, your initial melee attack will deal an additional 1D8 Fire damage. So if you're using a Long Sword, your first attack will be 2D8 + Strength modifier. The fire damage dealt to another creature within 5 feet of that target also increases by 1D8, so that second target will take 1D8 + Spell casting modifier. Hope this helps.

There is a reason I am saying in 5th edition, and not in the 2024 players handbook, or saying in 5.24. I haven't played with the 2024 handbook yet, I don't own it, and I haven't had the chance to read through its entirety, so I'm not equipped to discuss it. There will be a time when I discuss the changes in the 2024 handbook, but there are many, many players who still prefer to remain in the pre 2024 release, such as myself. I'm not giving misinformation, I have the version of the spell I am discussing right there on the screen as I discuss it, and as I said, I will eventually touch on the 2024 handbook changes. If there is confusion, I do apologize, but there isn't much I can do about that right now.

It's just a new spell now, but the old version still deserves to be talked about (as an example of how to NOT do action economy🤣)

It also has it's roots in our own real world. It has Greek roots and means "the performance of miracles" and specifies a magical origin. In 1971, Isaac Bonewits released a book called "Real magic" in which Thaumaturgy was defined as the science or physics of magic. This doesn't make it real, of course, but it's interesting how far the word and idea reaches.

This is a good point, I hadn't considered Warforged when making that statement, so the specificity is likely on purpose, but it can be hard to tell with some of the older spells. All the same, thank you for pointing this out, and I thank you for enjoying the video :)
