Simple Solid Liquid Manure Separation | Water Reuse on Dairy Farms | Hillcrest Farms (Dearing, GA)
A flush dairy barn with a sand settling lane (to separate sand) and a weeping wall (to separate manure solids) maximizes nutrient use and protects the local water supply. See how brothers Mark and Andy Rodgers employ an elaborate cow cooling system and high-quality rations to maintain high milk production on their southeastern dairy farm. In addition, their small family farm has implemented the following practices:
• Robotic milking machines create highly skilled job opportunities.
• Strip-till farming and year-round crop rotation for greater carbon sequestration
• Riparian buffer protects a local stream and sequesters an estimated 26 tons/acre of carbon annually, offsetting the farm’s GHG emissions

    Can i be totally honest? I have been watching these videos about cows be acting like puppies that are actually friendly. And quite frankly i am guilty now because I eat them. What i want to do now is prepare myself to never again eat their meat, but before i do that i want to stuff myself and eat as much beef for the last time as possible then never again eat beef for the rest of my life. It's kind a like saying goodbye to beef for the last time.. Is that okay guys? Do you guys agree?

    • @andreiirimia327
      @andreiirimia327 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cows will die anyway so there's no reason. If you won't buy it the beef will have a bad taste and will get thrown away or given away to other animals.

    • @cebruthius
      @cebruthius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you feel morally burdened by eating meat, nobody is going to say that you have to stop eating meat altogether. But be honest to yourself when you have the choice. You decide. No sense in doing something rash or radical if you can't keep that up.

    • @fin4204
      @fin4204 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vid was in February, Simple answer is that Grass doesn't grow over the winter and Cattle get cold so they **want** to stay inside. In theory you possibly could keep them outside during the winter but that complicates things unnecessarily as you'd have to feed them a bit more due to the energy loss which comes with their bodies trying to heat up and you would have to haul that food into a feeder In a field at a time of year when the grass and ground is likely to be Very soft due to the increased moisture which leaves ruts and wheel marks in the ground. You would also have to build them shelter anyway as cattle don't like to get cold. Farmers have a solution to this though, they will cut some grass, gather it up into a Silage pit and preserve it to then be fed next year so the cattle will still be eating grass just in a different form. Other farmers do the same with maize etc.

    What happens to the calf at birth?

    • @justforfun4623
      @justforfun4623 ปีที่แล้ว

      At birth calves are separated from the cow, then the colostrum is milked from the cow and fed to the calf, most dairies will feed the colostrum to the calf for at least 2 feedings, the more colostrum the calf gets withing the first few hours of birth the better for the calfs health, then the calf is put into a hut and fed cows milk until weaning, very well taken care of. Bull calves are treated just the same as heifer calves. They are taken care of better than the cow can do.
