    Just got my grandpas 50. He bought it new. Runs and works as it should but the plan is to restore. He had a 40 I bought when he died that I left unrestored and still work it around the house. I have become enamored by the old two cylinder JDs. Yours is beautiful.

    • @MusicandTractors
      @MusicandTractors 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That will be cool to have one restored and one still in working clothes. The best of both worlds! They really did a great job on the paint. Only issue is it drips a little bit of oil. My dad kept saying he wishes he would have had that fixed before the paint. For now we live with it. I agree with you, there’s just nothing like a 2 cylinder JD!

  • @keltonwright7
    @keltonwright7 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not a big fan of the rain cap, understand the functionality, but usually get a tree branch caught into and twists them up. I personally dont like the way they violently flap on the 2 cylinders, 4-6 cylinders are much smoother.

    • @MusicandTractors
      @MusicandTractors 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most people mount the cap the other way, so the flap opens towards the driver to prevent that. I don’t mind it. I’m too short to reach the top to put a coffee can on it.

  • @keltonwright7
    @keltonwright7 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Its almost like the chrome straight pipe was made for the 2 cylinders. But I will gove you my opinion. Chrome straight pipe sounds way better for limited use, but if you ever plan to use it for hours, the stock is so much easier on the ears. I got a straight pipe on my 820, and boy does it bark. Sounds great and can be heard for 5+ miles away when its working hard. But you sit on that thing cultivating or hauling wagons for 4, 6 or 8 hours its really starts to wear on a guy.

    • @MusicandTractors
      @MusicandTractors 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally agree with you. This tractor is only for show now. But if it was used on a regular basis, I’m pretty sure the stock muffler would go back on it.

    I worked for my Uncle in the 70's and he had this very same tractor. It was his favorite for baling hay, planting, and other lighter work (He also had a 730D and a 4010D) His tractor had nearly the same level of shine and the wide fenders. He was a master on the machine able to back it up, along with the baler and a 4-wheel wagon. I remember him smiling on his tractor as well. So glad you have these videos of your father and his JD doing what he loved. Thanks for sharing!

    • @MusicandTractors
      @MusicandTractors 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is such a great memory of your uncle! We have several tractors, other JD's, Allis Chalmers, even a Farmall cub. This one here is my favorite to drive. The sound, the hand clutch, the power steering and the fenders so my family can ride on it safely. I love it so much! I can see why it was his favorite. Although the 730D is the cream of the crop on those 2 cylinders! But the 630 had enough power to get the job done.

    • @larrybolhuis1049
      @larrybolhuis1049 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MusicandTractorsWithout doubt the 730D was my favorite. It had no 3-pt so you mounted easily from the rear, making hooking and unhooking wagons much nicer! It also had the wide fenders so you could ride along easily. He even had duals for it for some parts of the year. Due to the hand clutch and brake placement you could drive these 2 cylinder models easily while standing, which was a big bonus when disking plowed ground for example !

    When I was young we had an old G John Deere that we used around our farm. I was cutting and hauling silage from a rented farm about 5 miles away. I pulled two full silage wagons back to our farm each time. Once, on the way back to our farm a bolt in the steering worked loose and got stuck on the hood of the tractor which turned the tractor to the left and into a ditch. It broke the tractor in half. The two wagons pushed the tractor sideways blowing out both back tires on the tractor and damaged both wagons. I was lucky enough not to be hurt too bad but I had two sore legs after nearly being thrown over the steering wheel.

    • @MusicandTractors
      @MusicandTractors 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh my gosh what a terrifying situation! I'm glad that you ended up ok. I have seen and heard too many horror stories from farming accidents. The average person doesn't understand the risks made to get food on the table. I don't remember the details if it was my dad or my uncle but one time they were moving the elevator from one farm to the other and someone in a car wasn't paying attention and hit the wheel of the elevator. Bent it all up and their car pretty badly. I was maybe 12. He told me I was never allowed to drive a tractor back and forth from one farm to the next.

    • @davidepool5884
      @davidepool5884 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MusicandTractors You are absolutely right. The average person doesn’t have a clue about how dangerous it is to produce the food they eat. My father in-law was killed a few years ago while trying to start his tractor. It wouldn’t start with the key so he was standing beside it jumping the starter. He must have left the tractor in gear and didn’t lock the breaks. He must have opened the throttle a good bit because it started and took off running over him. The neighbor found him because the tractor hit a post on his shop and the tire kept spinning causing smoke. I know of many other incidents where farmers I know have been seriously injured.

I was 7 when my dad died, mom sold the dairy farm soon after because my older brother at 13 couldn’t run the farm. Mom had 7 kids to care for and obviously couldn’t run the farm either. I am now 59 years old and those events have affected my whole life, I know it’s wrong but I’m jealous of men who had their fathers until adulthood. Two of my friends came to the funeral who lost their dad well before I lost mine. My tears immediately shifted from my sorrow to theirs. I could sympathize with them. In that regard I was thankful for the 37 years I had with him. Then on the other hand I think about my kids and how he’ll miss every milestone of their lives. And it just makes me want to cry again. Everyday has been this constant battle of mixed emotions like this. And you are right. It will affect me every day moving forward. Just like you. I’m glad your brother still has the 70. It’s the worst feeling in the world. If you lost yours unexpectedly like I did. There’s no closure. There was so much more I had to learn from him. Actually last summer I helped him for 3 days around the farm and getting tractors ready for our annual show. He said to me. “One of these days we will have to sit down and I’ll go over everything I know about these tractors so you can write it down”. Things like oil changes, where spare parts are. 😢 Well we never got to do that. I have so many questions still. Fortunately his brother, my uncle, is still here and very knowledgeable. So I’ll be leaning on him for help. And vice versa. I really feel robbed of the whole closure thing. I just feel like I was watching a movie and never saw the ending. Nobody likes that.

    You said he was in a pit. Was he overcome? Before I retired one of the things I did was taught safety. Both fall protection and confined space. I really feel for you as that could have been prevented.😢 Near where I live just a couple of years ago 3 brothers died cleaning a manure pit. One was in it and was overcome, the others tried to rescue but were overcome as well. 😢😢😢 By the way I love the 2 poppers. We probably had 7 or 8 of them over the years. ❤

      @MusicandTractors 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Joel, I’m not 100% what you mean by overcome. Basically from what we understand, he reached down in this pit by laying on the shop floor. I’m assuming he got too much body mass in the hole and slipped in upside down. The coroner said he most likely couldn’t breathe and suffocated within minutes. We hope and pray he didn’t suffer for long. As we have no account of him from 9am that day until 3pm. I know he missed a call on his cell phone around 12. And I texted him around 10:30. So I’m assuming he was gone by then. I agree with you this was 100% avoidable and now we sit here suffering from what could have been. My heard breaks the most for my kids. They are 1 and 3. He loved them so much. He only got 3 years of being a papaw.

      @@MusicandTractors I am so sorry for your loss. I really feel for you and your family as loosing a loved one too soon is very hard as I lost my wife of 36 years to a massive stroke about a year and a half ago. What I mean by being overcome is passing out due to the lack of oxygen. It can happen very quickly in pits and confined spaces. Many things can cause depletion of oxygen from work being done, decomposition of something in the space or even just being in it too long without air being replaced. I hope I was able to answer your question. Hopefully other readers will see this and know how dangerous confined spaces are as it may only take a matter of seconds to become unconscious. Basic air monitors can be purchased for just a few hundred bucks and will let etrents know if the air is good or not. Again very sorry for your loss.

      @@JoelMahlman you are absolutely correct. That is what they said he didn’t have oxygen. Which I guess is why they said he didn’t suffer long. Upside down with his whole body weight on top of him not able to breathe. Thank you for the suggestion of an Air monitor. We are going to get a plumber out to look at the situation to see if we can modify it so no one ever has to reach down in that pit again.

      @@MusicandTractors I believe your father and my wife were the same age when they passed. Far to young. Let your children know that Papaw is now their own very special angel watching over them. If you haven't already you could use his tractor as some sort of tribute to your father honoring him.

    Wow!!! Thank you for doing this video. I lost my Dad back in 2019. Only had him for 62 short years. I recently did a video on my channel about our farm soon to be reaching the century farm status. Made mention of my Dad several times in that video / slide show. New subscriber to your channel here

I miss him every day. I’ll check out your videos too! I’ve been watching lots of farming videos lately. It’s how I connect with him.
