Neil Hawkes World Values Day 2024 Video Greeting
Neil Hawkes World Values Day2024 message to Merriton International School in Thailand.
This year's World Values Day theme is 'Bringing Values to Life.'
The school have chosen to focus on cross-generational values celebration this year using "Across The Generations" as the single topic and asked the school community to reflect upon and share. This is in an effort to engage the school community in the mentoring and reverse-mentoring opportunities that sharing older and newer wisdom informs when bringing values to life.

A deep and engaging conversation about the importance of values for us all, and bringing them to life. If Ines and her Values20 team can get the attention of the G20 world leaders at their summit in November so they embrace values-based policy-making how transformative that could be.

I had the perspective 20 years ago, so I dropped Marketing studies and became a Psychologist; However being a psychologist in a "non first world" county puts you in position very close to poverty (even house keepers are better paid). I had to complement my studies with organizational and marketing studies, so I could afford a life according to the world standards (in any first world country), making a career in market research. I think your analysis should also consider other social and economical contexts, that push people to find ways to avoid poverty (following Maslow's needs). By the way, across my market research career I had used very little of my psychological background. Analysis of motivation is an important topic but in market research other topics are even more relevant.

Notes and qutoes: 00:59 “I’ve been researching values and goals and their relationship to various forms of well-being for over 30 years,” ***4:22 “Very early on I stumbled on to the finding that people who said that one of the things they valued was making a lot of money and having a lot of possessions, that those people actually reported relatively low levels of well-being compared to people who had other sorts of values that they prioritized. And that became the basis for a lot of my early work and ended up spinning into why I ended up writing books about consumer culture, and materialism, and capitalism, and eventually also getting interested in topics beyond personal well-being, also things like social well-being and ecological well-being.” 5:20 It’s particular values that promote happiness 5:55 “Intrinsic values are values like your own personal growth, or having good relationships with family and friends, or contributing to the community. And we call those intrinsic values because from out theoretical perspective they are intrinsically satisfying to pursue. You’re doing them because they matter in and of themselves. And they meet intrinsic psychological needs that all people have from our theoretical perspective. So just like a plant needs a certain amount of water and sunlight, people have psychological needs too that have to be fulfilled for people to thrive. Extrinsic goals and values on the other hand are values which are focused on rewards and praise. And the three main extrinsic goals we’ve studied have been for money, for image, and for status. And those are all extrinsic in the sense that you can see they involve some external reward or praise, but they’re also a pursuit as a means to some other end. So why do people want money? Well, the money in itself doesn’t do anything, it’s good for some other reason. (***7:05) So after establishing this distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic goals what we found in our research and what has been replicated dozens of times in lots and lots of different nations since then is that the more that people prioritize intrinsic goals relative to extrinsic goals the higher their personal well-being, the more they treat other people in ways which will facilitate other people’s well-being, and the more they behave in ways which facilitates the Earth’s well-being. On the other hand, when people focus on those extrinsic goals for money, image, and status, what the research shows is that they have lower personal well-being, they treat other people in more manipulative, less empathic ways, and they behave in ways which are more damaging to the environment. And that’s’ been replicated for things like how important are these goals for us. We also find that attainment of those intrinsic goals provides greater well-being than attaining the extrinsic goals. So if you get your intrinsic goals that actually improves your well-being. If you get your extrinsic goals there’s probably a little short ‘Oh great. I got this new car.” kind of feeling. But in terms of really being nutritive and supportive of people’s well-being it actually is not helpful for well-being.” (8:30) effort and goals 9:33 “What the intrinsic values do is they satisfy people’s needs. What the research shows is that the extrinsic values end up frustrating people’s needs and that’s part of why their well-being is lower.” 10:08 “The 3 needs that we talk about are needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.”… more to quote. 12:40 Meaning of “well-being”? Subjective well-being, expert Ed Diener, more to well-being than that. Hedonic well-being. Eudaimonia: purpose, meaning, vitality ***15:45 “One of the things that I and others as well have argued is that when we’re talking about well-being we need to talk about personal well-being, we need to talk about social well-being, civic well-being if you will, and we need to talk about ecological well-being, the well-being of the planet. This is one of the things I’ve found really fascinating about the intrinsic/extrinsic values distinctions is what we find is that the more the people focus on intrinsic values, they have happier personal lives, they treat others in ways which are more facilitative of those other people having happier lives, and they live in ways which are lighter on the planet. In contrast, when people focus on extrinsic values they’re less happy personally, they behave in more manipulative ways which undermine other people’s well-being, and they behave in ways which destroy the planet.” 17:05 Studies on intrinsic/extrinsic values and physical health. People with more extrinsic values report more stomachaches, and headaches, smoking and drinking more 18:40 “One of the interesting things we’ve found is, and this has been shown in other research, so Sonja Lyubomirsky and others have found that when people are happy they tend to act in more prosocial ways. And my colleagues and I have found, and this has been replicated multiple times, that people who are happier also live in ecologically more sustainable ways.” ***24:05 care about particular kinds of values, intrinsic vs extrinsic: data shows, psychological needs are better satisfied, more positive emotions 25:15 intrinsic values higher levels of well-being quote …In Contrast, think about a person who cares about extrinsic values. Well, they need to make a heck of a lot of money so they work a lot of hours. They go into debt in order to buy the things that they want but they can’t afford. They’re very focused on their image so always have to be paying attention to what’s new, what’s not new, so they can have the new thing so then people can tell them how cool they are. Then the people don’t always tell them how cool they are so they’re not always feeling really great about that. And they always want to have status but there’s always somebody who has higher status and not everybody thinks they’re all that cool. Right? So the day to day experience of the person who focuses on those extrinsic values, in contrast to the intrinsic values, those in the extrinsically oriented people are having momentary experiences which do a bad job facilitating those needs. Right? And therefore, they’re feeling lower well-being. So that’s how it works for personal well-being. That’s what the research shows. 27:30 extrinsic values, does not work well for other people’s well-being, research shows this: tends to objectify other people. To turn other people into objects for me to manipulate, for me to get ahead. Also leads to big house, big car, flying a lot which is bad for environment ***32:07 Is Consumer capitalism viable? Based on extrinsic values “The tale I just spun you, from my perspective makes one have to deeply wonder whether consumer capitalism is a viable way to actually promote all the forms of well-being that I just described. Cause consumer capitalism is based in extrinsic values. It’s based in getting people to work a lot of hours, go into a lot of debt, buy a lot of stuff, economic growth, the development of natural land into a resource that can be used for somebody to make money off of it, competition, winners and losers, all that stuff is extrinsic values. Advertising people try to sell us that stuff as though it will help our personal growth, or in our friendships and such, but the data just don’t bear that out. If you dig deeply into what it means to organize an agenda around values and you buy the narrative that I just spun, which to use a capitalist or advertising metaphor there, then that is a direct challenge to the dominant political economic social system, and one that calls for a deep rethinking that almost nobody is willing to undertake. And almost nobody in power is willing to undertake. Why? Because it’s not good for business as we can currently conceive of business. It’s not good politically because most politicians especially in the United States are in the pocket of big business whether they’re Democrat or Republican. It’s all the same. It’s all the same. (34:14) …So you’re talking about a fundamental rethink here of the way that the world is organized. In contrast, saying ‘Oh, you’re unhappy? Well, take this selective serotonin and reuptake inhibitor. That’s actually completely consistent with the current narrative and makes a heck of a lot of money for big pharmaceutical companies and psychiatrists. Or, “Well, you want to be happy? Do some mindfulness meditation.’ Well, mindfulness meditation is great. I meditate. And we know that more mindful people care more about intrinsic values and less about extrinsic values. But to get people to sit for twenty minutes and pay attention to their breath is not actually, especially as it has been used by corporations in the US, it’s been swung and framed as ways which can facilitate effectiveness and productivity. Right? That’s what it’s about. And this is true of any system, what I’m about to say. Any system wants to maintain itself, whether it’s your personality, or a religion, or a political system. And it sets up things that make it easy to maintain itself. And it makes it difficult for people to do things which are a challenge to it. “ 38:25 under capitalism: education system turns out good little workers, turns out thousands of people with psychology degrees, and anthropology degrees who work in advertising to figure out the best ways to manipulate us to want more stuff.

I love Prof. Tim Kasser's perspective that acting on certain values over others leads to wellbeing. And I agree that the Bible supports that view. However, his understanding of how one goes to hell is incorrect. We don't end up in hell because we do bad things, for all have sinned, but rather because we reject the one way to heaven. That way is God's plan of salvation, which is through faith in His Son, Jesus. We show our faith and give evidence of our trust in and love for our Savior by desiring and valuing doing good and not harm, according to God's standard.
