Blacksmith Basics a Photography Story
My son was taking a basic lesson in how blacksmithing works, so I decided to work on my story telling skills after capturing the resulting footage on my GoPro and Canon T6i. Lenses used on the Canon were a 100mm f2 and a 35mm f1.4.

      It should. If you have any friends and family with prescription glasses (unable to see far away), you can try and test by holding them in front of the lens to see if it gets you closer to infinity focus. It is obviously a little bit of trial and error. My brother joked that I should take my camera to the optometrist, which to be honest would actually get you the best result with each lens if they are open to helping you.

    I just accidently found this video and I happen to own a broken yongnuo 50mm that always shows "error 01" on my canon 1300d... So its been in a drawer for maybe 2 years. I saw your video and thought "why not" and opened it according to your video. The 50mm is very similar to your 35mm. My apperture module was absolutely drowned in "oil" or whatever it was. I opened it and all the blades were stuck together and "wet"... The blades did look a bit different from yours but similar enough for me to figure them out. I put them on a paper and cleaned them using Qtips... I kind of just made them all "dry" again. It was not easy to put the thing together again... But after some trial and error methods I succeded. I did some misstakes when assembling the lens again so after first try I had aligned the AF-cogs wrongly so AF did not work. But after another dissassembly I understood how it should be put together and succeded. Now the lens works perfectly again. I love these videos where people share info. It was worth alot for me. Thanks!

      I made this video hoping someone else would find the details useful about the 35mm f2. There are not many teardown videos of these lenses, and it is nice to see what you are getting yourself into before attempting. I had to go in blind and hope I could get the thing back together. Whoever originally puts the oil in these lenses probably needs to watch. I imagine the blades work like a sponge once the oil from the other moving parts gets too hot (like in a delivery truck during the summer).

    • @thefunofphotography
      @thefunofphotography ปีที่แล้ว

      I used an inexpensive UV filter and just a small strip of electrical tape to attach the glass. UV filters are widely available at any size. You may even have one in the attic of a family members house that did film photography.

    I just bought one and JUST took it out of the box.... What do you know the aperture is stuck n not moving

    • @thefunofphotography
      @thefunofphotography ปีที่แล้ว

      When mine was stuck, I could at least hear a small clicking noise of the lens attempting to open/close the aperture. This was the gear motor turning but unable to move the blades as the were all gummed up and stuck together. Mine was stuck all the way open. If by chance it is stuck all the way closed with no visible oil on the blades, it may be broken.

      I had trouble finding videos and was ready to toss my 35mm. So as a last ditch effort when I attempted the repair, I thought I would film it since not much is available. I am not familiar with the 85mm lens, so I am not sure if that repair is similar. Mine was a victim of excess oil causing the blades to stick together. After researching, this is a common problem if the lens has been in a hot environment.

    • @thefunofphotography
      @thefunofphotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried some experiments a 135mm f2.8 lens and managed to get one to work. However the images were soft at infinity focus. When it comes to telephoto lenses I think it is more challenging for this to work. It is possible with the right focal lengths but may require some experimentations. The results may not be worth the effort.

    Do you think I can just tape the 75mm glass onto a 77 or 72 step down ring without a lens filter ?

    • @thefunofphotography
      @thefunofphotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That should work, but I think it would slightly reduce the effective f stop of the lens by a small percentage. Ideally you want a step down ring to prevent applying tape directly to your lens. It is easier to damage a ring than your lens. Also be aware that different focal lengths may require different strengths of a double concave lens. So some experimentation is required if you want infinite focus. A telephoto lens may only focus to infinity if the double concave lens is mounted far away from the front element if it is not strong enough. Macro focusing should still be achievable. Just get a cheap set of double concave lenses to try it out and see what works before finding an expensive set (small ones will work but lower the f-stop for learning what focal distance of the double concave lens works best). I almost wanted to buy a set of cheap lenses used by an optometrist to do further experimentation with this!

    I picked up the Minolta Celtic version of this lens about 4 months ago. It has a warmth, crazy sharpness, and on my Fuji body, it seems to still have infinity. But I paid 34 dollars for it. I own Fuji primes, like the 90mm 2.0, but when you get this charm and quality for that price...well, it's a favorite child. Two more oldies came in this week. The Nikon 105 2.8 and the Sears Ricoh 55mm1.4 . As soon as I get over this Covid hit, I'll be finding that winter light. You scored big on that butterfly. You could try wearing a huge sombrero..that might block the light up the flip screen...I would think using a long lens in sun, you'd use the viewfinder...

      It has been a fun lens, and the flange distance on a Canon (or Nikon) would limit it to close up photography. I am hoping to get a mirrorless in the future that will allow this lens to have native infinite focus (I tried it on a friend's Sony and it worked great).

    • @thefunofphotography

      I believe it was a small phillips (+) screwdriver.
