Hugging trees for the holidays; The Social Gospel Worship and Learning Center; Minister Paul J. Bern
It's true. I hug people, pets, and trees. I have no children of my own, but I dote on everybody else's. I go out of my way to treat them all well. I make no bones about it. Call me a 'tree hugger' and I'll thank you for the compliment. If you would rather not hug me right about now, it's OK, I understand. I don't expect people to reciprocate anyway.
If God Can Create Trees 300 Feet Tall, How Much More Will He Do For Those Who Ask for His Help?
I once tried to hug a tree in California that was alive during the time of Christ. I couldn't resist. I had to get next to such ancient life. To walk among that grove of redwoods was to walk in the hush of a cathedral, only one far more ancient, more holy, than any church. An ancient habitat still alive with flowing juices while busy sucking moisture from the ground and giving it back to the sky. These trees were busy drawing energy down from the sun and giving it to the earth. I couldn't help looking up in the presence of such enormous trees. If God creates living things of such magnificence as these trees, how much more will he do for those who ask Him for his help?
Atlanta Is My Home
But California isn't my home, Atlanta is. While Georgia may not be California, we also have trees that are worthy of hugging.... (story continues)

Well people, it’s now a done deal. Donald Trump has been reelected, with a sense of ‘deja vu’ sinking in to the American electorate since we’ve been here before. Or have we? Right, I know, this is Trump’s second term, but something is different about this time around that wasn’t present before. President Trump is a convicted felon 27 times over. If any of the regular folks like us were to run f...

I came to the conclusion many years ago that one of the main events and biggest attractions of capitalism is the Holiday shopping season. This week we will be finishing up Second Corinthians chapter 5. When we left off at verse 10 last week, I elaborated on the fact that “we walk by faith and not by sight”, ending with the warning that we will all someday stand before “the judgment seat of Christ”. We can't always trust our human instincts and senses. They can and do deceive us. But we can always trust Jesus completely. Today as ...

Yes create fear and you own them! A real man of a god would Never need fear to rule, he would have utter confidence in his own righteousness. Fear would not be needed and threats of hell would not be tolerated as a weapon to use for submissiveness. Makes this god look weak and ineffective as a leader. This god is everything he preaches against…he’s racist, misogynistic, jealous, a mass murderer and a slave monger! Satan killed 10 people in the Bible…god killed 100 million….who’s the bad guy? And Satan killed those 10 because god tricked into doing it….i think the bad guy is god and he’s the only one who should be going straight to hell!!

Oh look! Its the synagogue of Satan once again deceiving the flock. With one neat trick I know that you only offer me poison. This is why I left the Church, because it is completely compromised. I had a prophetic dream, I'm now reassessing my opinion of the Church. And isn't it just a "co-inke-dink" that some Americanized shabbos goy, is immediately here to remind me exactly why I left. I am 32 this year. The voice of the Holy Spirit has always been with me, and when it speaks I always hear even if sometimes I fail to obey. But all I am hearing right now are the words of an Ancient Canaanite cult as they shove infants into ovens. I'll wait for the Holy Spirit to guide me further, but I know I don't need to listen to rabbi or their shabbos goy and their deception. Brother you need to get right with our creator. Doesn't matter if you're 99% preaching Christ. It is that 1% of deliberate willful evil that really matters. And to be clear, my intuition is not that you are mistaken, that would be understandable. I'm seeing the well being poisoned. (again) I will pray for you brother. It is never too late, not even on the cross is it too late.

I agree with many of your points. I would add that people all around the world are struggling too see a good future of any kind. Birth rates are collapsing everywhere because they dont want to bring children into a world so divided, run for the benefit of the super rich and corporations, whilst the eco system is collapsing, and there voices are mocked. How bankrupt has the world become that even in affluent places, people no longer want kids (now abortion is becoming illegal, more will just get sterilsed)... what does that view of the future do to young peoples spirituality, whether your version or mine?

The reason why people in general are leaving churches is because they do not have or relate the true gospel of Yeshua (Jesus). Churches have been handed lies and heresies about who Jesus was, and what his mission was. He came here with a message of unconditional love, nothing else. The reason for his death was also solely about love, not a sacrifice to appease a cruel, unjust "god" who demanded blood sacrifice. Yeshua also was warning his followers and disciples that the "god" the hebrews/jews worshipped was Satan/Yahweh/Jehovah. This is the reason why the religious leaders sought to murder him. They also couldn't have a man (son of man) walking around doing things among the common people they themselves could never do (except through dark occult means). The Cross is the ultimate symbol of unconditional love, and in reality, Jesus had spent upwards of 30 years on the cross of human suffering and sorrow, amongst the common people, healing their pains and addressing the injustices of the tyranny they lived under. It had NOTHING to do with a "blood sacrifice" for supposed "sins". Let me ask you - Is ignorance or sin a larger problem in our world? I apologize if I sounds harsh or am 'ambushing' you with information, it just really riles me when people do not understand something they claim to. My purpose is simply to share these facts. Jeremiah 16;19: " O Lord, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit." Our fathers have inherited lies. Yes, they have. God Bless.

They are leaving churches because 99.99999% of the churches are teaching a false gospel. 85% are Zionist that have no clue what the scripture says, another portion are people that want to speak only of faith and not repentance and the last little bit see it all as an academic exercise as opposed to spirituality. Now the government has firm control over what can and cannot be said in the pulpit with their 501c3 registrations, at some point they will use it to make churches bow to their agenda, if they have not already.

There is an ancient commandment in Judaism that dates back well over 3,000 years ago. The people of that day and time set aside 10% of their crops or livestock and gave it to the Temple priests. Since there was no money or banking as we know it today, this is how they made their annual contributions (or "tithes") to support the priests and uphold the Temple. But modern churches twist this teaching so they can command their congregations to "tithe" 10% of their weekly incomes. Yet the Bible is clear that this was only done on certain feast days as outlined in the Old Testament. It is not necessary to donate each week like what is being taught today. That's why I call out modern religion over this issue.

i agree, i believe there should be two types of establishments that use money, one that offers a good or service based on supply and demand that can naturally make its own profit. and certain establishments that run at a deficit and cannot or should not make a profit based off of their nature, but benefit the community well enough to deserve to be propped up exactly as much as it needs to run (parks, clinics- once we renegotiate all drug prices based on their real scarcity, churches and community buildings)@@RevPaulBern

Now continuing on from my other comment, the Bible tells us about the resurrection and the three heavens that man will receive because of the judgement of God on them. You can read this in 1st. Corinthian chapter 15. Paul describes that there are three degrees of Glory, ( Heaven), and there three are three types of bodies that all men will be divided into. There one Glory equal to the brightness of the sun, then two more with lesser Glory. The Bible teaches the eternal life comes through Jesus Christ, Salvation. The Bible also teaches us that God will reward every man according to their works. The church teaches that this is exhaustion. Faith in Jesus Christ and your faith made strong buy your good works, Exaltation. There is so much more the church teaches us how to prepare to meet God. Wishing all of you all the treasures God has in store for all those that follow his teachings.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may have what you may spiritually be looking for. The Bible has God's message to you about all aspects of your life. As a a breef introduction, the church teaches about the Plan Of Salvation from the Bible. In Genesis Chapter One all the CREATION takes place and ends with the creation of Adam and Eve. The Bible then teaches us in Genesis Chapter two verse five that all the things created were done before they were in the world. Then continuing it tells that God formed man from the dust of the earth. The church explains that the first creation is the spirit world and the creation of our spirit Beings. The forming of man is the way the Bible describes the forming of the physical earth and the physical man

I grew up going to the First Baptist Church. During Sunday school they taught me that prior to the flood the earth's landmass was in the form of a ring, a perfect circle representative of God's love, perfectly level, without mountainous terrain, with one ocean inside and one outside. They told me that earth's land reformed in the way we see in maps today as a result of the flood. In 7th and 8th grade I attended Catholic school, where I learned enough about that organization to know they engage in blatantly hypocritical idolatry. Funnily enough, I had a brief interaction with their new Magisterium AI. (Special thanks to Discord for retaining my report of this.) I asked "Is praying to any entity other than God heretical?" It responded saying, "Praying to any entity other than God, as divinely revealed or definitively proposed by the Church, is considered heretical according to Catholic Church teaching." I then asked "What is the Catholic Church's stance on praying to saints?" It replied that "The Catholic Church teaches that praying to saints, specifically asking for their intercession, is a valid and encouraged practice." Between this and the hatred being spread under the guise of faith, like holding signs that says "God hates f@gs" for example, I can't seem to find any value in going back unless something drastic changes from within. So please, as I genuinely wish I could cease with this attitude, pardon my sarcasm as I scoff, _Forgive me if I don't trust these so-called churches._ Since reading the Bible for myself I'm seeing that so few self-proclaimed "Christians" actually have _anything_ to do with the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. No one has done more in recent history to deter people from the faith than fair-weather Christians and false witnesses who wear the label because they're afraid of being abandoned by an unloving family or even excommunicated from their entire community. For them, this is not a matter of faith alone. It's also fear of potentially life-threatening repercussions for being honest about it. People like Dawkins and other blow-hard atheists have capitalized on the doubts of this marginalized group of people and turned their fear of community rejection into a widespread community centered on the rejection of Christianity as a whole. Springing forth from this we see various extremist groups again repeating this process. It's no longer only the doubtful children of churchgoers but larger groups of people who have grown up with disbelieving parents, people whose only knowledge of Christianity amounts to "hate speech" and "archaic sky daddy". They have little to no insight into the reality of the gospel or any of the nuance. They simply reiterate what they've heard from people they respect and admire. And this perspective is precisely how any denomination needs to approach current cultural issues. Nothing is new under the sun, but these are not isolated pockets. We're talking about multiple generations of neglect and misguidance being allowed to spread like a plague. When lifelong held fallacies are abolished, there's not much left of a person's identity. It's hard to come back from that. Instead of tearing away at what they think they know, teach them what they don't. They'll shed that skin naturally. I firmly believe that man is not to be trusted, but God alone. There are none on Earth in whom I can confide in, none to rely on. This is probably why I post lengthy comments like this aimed at total strangers, like some sort of digital distress beacon that I send out just hoping that I'm not the only one. Been doing it for a long time now. Anyway, the Lord led me to purchase my New American Standard Bible when I was too concerned with finding an "accurate translation". He's stuck with me in spite my utter contempt for literature as a whole. I'm certain He will guide me to an appropriate community if and when He wills it. Not like I have much of a say in the matter anyway. I was basically given an ultimatum. Quit my job, stop relying on money, and have faith or suffer immeasurable torment. Like everything in life, I just stopped partway in getting rid of my possessions. I pleaded for the Lord not to take away my love of computers. He told me He wouldn't, but I feel I'm losing interest anyway. I feel as though my level of Biblical knowledge is insufficient to determine whether specific church is worthy of teaching anyone. Nor do I have sufficient confidence to enter a situation where I might be roused to address a congregation's extra-biblical or even anti-biblical teachings in person. I fear that I would walk away shamed and defeated. I'm actually so bad at convincing people of things, I've lost arguments which were simple matters of fact whilst being verifiably correct. Human beings simply aren't rational creatures when it comes to belief. They aren't convinced by evidence, nor are they swayed by logic. Even if you can get them to agree on a premise, then agree on the reasoning, they're still too emotionally attached to accept the natural conclusion. 'Course, I'm no different. There's nothing but self-doubt stopping me from walking away from the life I know. Only my lack of faith is preventing me from leaving everything I own and everyone I know to follow the Lord wherever He may lead. I'm fully aware that this insistence on relying on myself rather than on the Lord is immensely problematic. I just can't seem to help it, as if it were something _I_ could help. I'm fundamentally broken in ways that I doubt even God Himself could fix. Maybe my lack of drive, inability to focus is akin to Paul's thorn. Perhaps my absolute inability to function is a blessing in disguise. Either way, until it proves beneficial I'll continue to despise myself. The way I see it, all of these nonsensical political extremists are a symptom of our cultural betrayal of the family unit. With so much deception in popular culture, families have been torn apart. Children grow up without strong leaders and seek parental guidance from elsewhere, whether it's friends, neighbors, entertainers, etc. All people who are equally as flawed as they are. Few, if any, actually have an honest desire or ability to mentor another person. So what we're left with is a culture full of vultures picking meat from from the walking dead. An entire society built by never-grown children in adult bodies being coaxed into progressively more unsustainable houses built on sand masquerading as "love", "acceptance", and "support". As far as the thing about alcohol, the Bible simply cautions against intoxication and things that arise from the lack of inhibition which excessive drinking can result in. Moreover, I've come to learn that the reliance on substances in place of faith can be problematic in and of itself. Thoughts like "I could use a drink" or "I need to relax" then turning to a substance is such an example. This manner of thinking is extended not only to any psychoactive substance from sugar to heroin but also to pleasurable activities. This makes it particularly difficult to ascertain what is acceptable and what is not. Couple this with the fact that God is in no way restricted by human decisions, it _almost_ seems like a moot point altogether. (I can see the danger here.) Again, the answer seems to be "have faith" as the problem is not the substance or activity but the inherent rejection of God which comes from loving the world and the things in it. (Edit. Now that I'm thinking about it, if we're getting into technicalities, the Spirit of God occupies His church, which is comprised of followers of Jesus His Son, which means every Christian is then the dwelling place of the spirit of the living God. Still, though I can see the reasoning, it sounds like sketchy territory. That'd be having someone mail a letter to your neighbor. Yeah, it arrives at its destination, but it's addressed in a very strange manner. Still, I suppose that clears my most prominent issue with Catholicism.)

It’s not that complicated. People are turned off because Christian’s are acting like Job’s friends. Job’s friends were 💩heads that even got rebuked by god in that story. Then there’s the hypocrisy of Christian’s behavior toward immigrants and the poor vs what Jesus taught.

People are leaving the church because we've come to understand that everything we think we know about religion was ripped off from the Sumerians and Arkadians. We were created by beings from another world. The stories of that creation and the events of the next 1500 years of the historical record were picked through and re-crafted into the Abrahamic religions for the purpose of controlling man. Everything in the Old Testament is a modification of the truth.

You make a few good points but you often only partially explain things like alcohol. You are right, scripture doesn’t forbid it, but the Lord does not want intoxication, drunkenness and the like which is sin. You also make points on porn which is clearly out, if a man looks upon a woman with lust , he has committed adultery with her in his heart. Scripture does say don’t offer to pull the splinter out of someone’s eye before you pull the beam out of your own eye, so indeed it should be done. The hypocrisy of which you speak presumes Christians to be finished works when they are always works in progress. Young people should be taught to understand this. There are no perfect leaders. If we waited to hear only from perfect leaders there wouldn’t be any. Leaders who put themselves aside and let the Holy Spirit shine forth are doing the right thing. I could go on but it seems the millennials want a cuddly god that can be in the image of their own desire more than Jesus. Oh there are some who seek Jesus and it’s because He has sought them and they become willing to see the joy of the Lord. As to science, the scripture is not its opposite number. They are one. The reason many leave or avoid church today is they have been taught to do so by public education systems. If you are truly a pastor, please pray for wisdom and guidance and recall the scripture which speaks to the greater judgment upon teachers. Abortion is as much murder as any failure to take care of all people, but people must work if they want to eat. Naturally those who are truly unable, the Lord knows and He will provide. Jesus is the way, now I must return to the Word for I hardly know a thing compared to the study to come. The Lord is not progressing, He is complete. Revelation warns us not to add or subtract from the Word.

Pastor Paul, I don't know how youtube decided to show me your video but I'm glad it did. I had begun to lose faith for your generation. As a millennial I am greatly heartened to hear you speak of the Jesus that loves his neighbor, helps the poor, accepts and lifts the leper, treats the foreigner with dignity and respect and welcomes them to his house as his parents needed as they traveled to have him. I left the church because of all the things you mention. I have read the bible a number of times and this Jesus that I learned about was like the above not this image that loves money above all else, and hates immigrants, and hates the poor and stops at nothing to block aid to those in needs, and hates people who are just trying to live their life and find their own love. It is hard to reconcile a "prince of peace" when the actions of the church seem to only be full of hate and chaos. Anyways, thank you for giving me a little hope for your generation. I hope you are able to spread your message more to others and that they can re-find in their hearts the kind of selfless love for their neighbors that Jesus has for us all.

You are not good at hiding that you worship woke - and have no interest in Jesus. You throw "hate" at those that disagree with your alternative ideologies. Nice try. You probably think trying to stop sexualizing kids in school is "hate".

Society is sick of an unproven god. 1. Telling them they are sinners/worthless 2. Promoting bigotry / mysogany 3. Telling them how to run their lives 4. Pushing theism down their throats. Can you blame them?, Your faith is your own, but not yours to dictate to others

Each of these points is addressable. Firstly, you must first understand the perspective which you criticize if you wish to be taken seriously. Just because someone _says_ they're a Christian doesn't mean they are. You will know them by their fruits, or in plain language you will know who is a Christian based on how they behave. And if you don't know what Jesus Himself taught us about how we should behave, you couldn't possibly know who is a Christian and who is lying. If you did, you'd see that Christ does not promote bigotry nor misogyny in any way. Condemnation is specifically for unrepentant sinners. People who are good do not require salvation from sin. But who is without flaw? Who has never done anything wrong in their entire life? Have you ever met or even heard of someone who had never done wrong and is entirely without blame? Jesus's death was the punishment for all of our sins. He Himself paid the price by selflessly accepting death on the cross without fighting back. We human beings quite literally killed God, and He loves us so much that He begged for our forgiveness while we he was in agony and gasping for breath, just so we might remain alive in Him, just so that we don't have to face the judgement for sin ourselves. He conquered death itself 3 days later. We need only believe in Him and the Father will look upon us as He looks upon His Son. The judgement is done. The law is fulfilled. He will remember our sins no more. Does that really sound hateful to you? Pretty sweet deal, I'd say. As far as telling people how to run their lives goes: He instructs us how to live as we were intended to when we were designed. There's a right way and many wrong to go about doing things. You can hammer a screw and say "Well, this is how *I* do things. This is *my truth*. Don't tell me how to live my life." Doesn't really go so well though, does it? I'll make an analogy here: What if you have a child, you bring them into your home, show them affection and provide for them, then they start slandering you. They tell all of your friends how you hurt them. They put holes in your walls, destroy your belongings, lose your prized possessions, and tear apart family photos. Are you a bad person if you tell them tell them to stop doing doing these things, or is that a perfectly reasonable request? What if they keep doing it? How long can that last before you get angry? How long until you stop caring about them? That's how we live without God, whether we can see it or not. Yet, in spite of this, He still loves us. Human beings, who disobey almost constantly for our entire lives. We who not only disobey ourselves but actively encourage others to join us, just so we don't feel bad as about doing it. We who also teach our children to disobey. We who spread lies about He who loves us more than our friends, more than our parents, more than our pets, more than husbands and wives. He loves us so much that he doesn't punish us right away. He gives chance after chance, time after time to repent. He has done so for millennia, and will continue to do so until the very end. There is nothing stopping His constant flow of love beyond our own rejection of Him. So you see, what you interpret as "pushing theism down their throats" is not so. See things from the other perspective. It's the cries of people who don't want you to face punishment for your sin. It's people pleading for you to accept forgiveness.

Do you not realize you're perfectly describing liberal/leftist ideology? You don't think that sick, carcinogenic ideology isn't being forced down people's throats from pre-school on up? Comply or be cancelled! Whatever one's thoughts on God, and only a willfully blind fool would deny it 0:01 , it CANNOT be argued otherwise that the march down the drain of secularism parallels the societal decline. It's undeniable. The disintegration of the family, of moral thought and action, of consequenctial responsibility, and on, and on all stems from a break with God and religion. Nobody wants to live a life of accountability to or for ANYTHING. THAT'S why they embrace secularism. And, a society will not survive that way. It's akin to living in a city like SF where stealing is no longer punished. Steal 1k a day and not get in trouble? Ooh-Rah! And, we see how that's working out. People DO NOT WANT TO BE ACCOUNTABLE. They don't want to work to be more than a POS. And, that has not been serving us well at all. There's not a single, positive measurable that can be pointed to. By every single metric, things have dropped off a cliff since the 1960s. The tree has yieled no fruit. But, secularists will never acknowledge it's their failed ideologies, because once again...accountability. They have an allergy to it. I was raised Catholic. I have not been religious in my entire adult life, though. Religion produced more questions than answers for me, so I left it. But, after 9 years of Catholic education I can say that not once were we ever taught to hate anybody. Not once. Not ever. Never were we taught misogyny. Being taught mostly by Nuns, that would have been a riot. My Catholic school class had white kids, black kids, Asian kids, even three Muslim and two Jewish kids whose parents wanted their kids getting a better education than they would in public school. And, you know what? We all got along. We all went to eachother's birthdays and played together and slept over eachother's houses. So, before you regurgitate Pavlovian talking points you've heard vomitted from the perpetually ignorant and eternally outraged, learn what the Hell you're talking about. Ignorance isn't a virtue. Open your eyes. All the hate, division, and violence in our society is coming from the secularists.

Your "personal reflections" aren't facts. There have been numerous studies done about why people are leaving religion, but you choose not to do that homework and find out what people are saying about why they have left, and prefer to make unsubstantiated conjectures. Yes, there are quite a few reasons. The top reason in a recent study was the bigotry toward LGBTQ folks. Younger people especially know gay folks or trans or whatever. Hell, I'm a cis 66 and I know two trans persons in their 60s. And the hate that has been proscribed by the church misaligns with what people's experience has been: That these folks are simply human beings who are trying to get along like everybody else. The church is shooting itself in the foot by accepting the politically expedient purity funnel. But carry on. The sooner more people walk out the church back door, the quicker it'll be a non-starter.
