I’m from Indianapolis and went to school just south of Indy at Greenwood High. While I was in HS in the 90s several Indianapolis survivors came and did a presentation at our school. I respected them because my grandfather had served on both Block Islands and I knew more than the average kid about WW2 just from taking with my grandpa. But I didn’t have any real idea what the survivors of the Indianapolis went through. I still remember one of the survivors got really worked up and angry and was screaming at us about how we didn’t appreciate what we had or what people of his generation had done for us. At the time I just thought just thought he was an angry, mean old man. We hadn’t been disrespectful during the presentation or anything, he just seemed to have lost it and started ranting and screaming at us. Now years later after reading many books on WW2 and the Indianapolis and seeing documentaries about the hell those men went through I understand why he was so angry. He probably wasn’t much older than a HS kid when the Indy went down. God bless those men for what they did. It’s incredible to me that they could survive that and then go on to live normal productive lives. I just wish I had known then what I know now about their experience. I would love to be able to talk to those men and thank them today but they’re all dead except for this one man. God bless him.
