I searched in other books about shm and their books said x(t) = Acos(wt), why do you use sin instead of cos?

For the approach you utilized, which requires finding the value of "b" that would make the derived parabola a perfect square or one whose multiplicity is 2 and whose discriminant is 0, sort of requires additional thinking or an application of "completing the square" method. This to me is sort of an additional computation time. Won't using tge derivative relationship of the original parabola to that of the tangent be more efficient and faster. Since we're given the original parabola as: y = x², then: f'(x) = 2x Considering we've already found the slope of the tangent, we can get tye coordinate point of "x" by equating: Slope = 2x since f'(x) = slope of all possible tangents of the parabola at point 'a'. Since slope -> m = 2 then, 2 = 2x x = 1 This means -> Tangent(1, y) By substituting x's value into "y = x²" you'll get that the second coordinate point is 1. Therefore, Tangent -> (1, 1) with slope equation of 'y = 2x -1'. Isn't this approach much simpler and less computational?

This is a great explanation, and tree diagrams will always work, but I would hate to write that all out. You can do this much faster with some basic combinatorics (not sure what academic level this is supposed to be) ABCD = 6*6*6*6=6^4 total possibilities We only need consider 5 cases : Where a 6 is rolled, if at all Case 1 : D = 6, then ABC can be anything. ABC6 = 6*6*6*1 = 6^3 Case 2 : C = 6, then can't get to origin unless we double count a previous case Case 3 : B = 6, then C+D=0. +1 has 3 ways, -1 has 2 ways. There are 2 permutations, and 6 possibilities for A. So, 6^2 *2 ways to get to origin. Case 4 : A = 6, then can't get to origin unless we double count a previous case Case 5 : No 6. Then A+B+C+D=0. So we have 3^2 * 2^2 * Permutations. For permutations, we have 4!/(2! * 2!) = 6. So case 5 has 6^3 ways to get to origin. Add them all up, divide by total and we get : (6^3 + 6^2 *2 + 6^3)/ 6^4 Divide out a 6^2 : (6 + 2 + 6)/6^2 Simplify : (14)/36 If you know combinations or permutations, this is a 5 minute problem
