Empowering Kids Through Personalized Learning: NaShawn Edwards on School Choice & Community Impact
In this episode of the Founder 2 Founder podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with NaShawn Edwards, the inspiring founder of Sunrise Learning Academy in Indiana. From her beautifully designed basement learning space, NaShawn provides personalized learning plans for every child, helping them stay on track with their peers in traditional schools. We dove into Indiana’s school choice landscape, the importance of raising children to become well-rounded adults, and how fostering kids in her community has shaped her approach to education.
NaShawn’s story is a powerful reminder of how one person’s dedication can create lasting change. I can’t wait for you to hear how she’s transforming lives, one child at a time.
Tune in to explore how one woman’s vision is transforming lives, one child at a time.

My name is Felicia Wright and I’m an unconventional homeschooling mom and teacher that stepped off the beaten path and now I help other parents do the same. After teaching for several years I discovered that school dimmed the light of so many children and I didn't want to participate anymore.
Now I help families as a family education consultant as well as share what I have learned as a business owner.
I believe that as a community we can create better educational outcomes if we work together. It is time to come together to create a better system for our children; even if that means bringing our kids home.

Thank you for making this video. It is so reassuring. I am a first year homeschool teacher for my youngest son. He is 7th grade and was finally pinpointed dyslexic and ADD after years of falling through the cracks. Our school system just couldn't accommodate well enough so we pulled him out. I was bombarded with ideas and curriculums but I really felt that buying something lock, stock, and barrel could prove not only too expensive but also counterproductive to what we wanted to do for him, which was to tailor a learning experience to his needs and interests. I wound up doing as you said, looking up standards, pulling from several resources, and creating our own, involving him all along the way. The great part is, though I have a daily plan written out for the entire school year, there is also built-in flexibility when something doesn't work quite as hoped, the unexpected occurs in our day, or we have to add in time for appointments, etc. That said, I have had my doubts and questions about if I am doing enough or going about it "right" . This really helped. Thanks again.
Great information. Thank you. I'm a former public school educator of over 30 years. I finally founded my own virtual school - Exceptional Village Academy. This is our 5th year and I still excited to see my students everyday.
Hello here watching thanks for sharing
Thank you for your help, I had one question, Where do I find the curriculum?
Hi Mummies I’ve admired homeschool for a long time before having a kid and did a year during the Covid time but got a tutor for her, now she’s in 4th grade, I will love to homeschool her again but really need help on how to start
I absolutely love this!!
Thank you so much!
OK, I love your advice! You're great!
I just started homeschooling my daughter in kindergarten with All About Reading, Spelling U See, & Itallic handwriting work books. These first couple months have been hard starting out, but I am finally seeing where my daughter is clicking with it. A lot is making sure I don’t over do it it with my time, because I can tell when the attention span starts to drain. However, there is something about this that I think would benefit from having Hooked on phonics added as a supplement in our homeschool as she is still trying to grasp how to sound out words.
School choice ALWAYS comes with strings attached to homeschooling. If you homeschool, you should naturally be against school choice as it WILL add regulations to homeschooling.

Ms McFadden is the best and the sweetest person ever she loves children if you have a child who needs to learn and grow please go tour her Academy
HI, I'm in California and want to homeschool my child through the private school option. When it is time for graduation from high school how does that work?
More like segregation. Biden said. “I don’t want my kids going to school in a jungle.” If you’re illegal you can pick whatever
Please do you do online live class so my child can join
Felicia, thank you so much for this video. I just found you today and I’m 3-4 videos deep and this one really resonated with me. I appreciate you.
I homeschooled. I found it very rewarding
In Nevada and also interested in reimagining school ❤❤
We started the first two years with curriculum. After the stress and finding myself building our 'school time' around what our child wanted to learn and how she learns best. We went for this "outside of curriculum" school year this year. Also, we were blessed with text books for free for this year that I am using. We are doing school in a somewhat similar method as you mentioned this year for Second Grade. For our child is more of a 2nd grade learner in most acedemics but we are still at a first grade level reader. This has allowed us more freedom in the 'classroom' and when we have days where she wants to explore outside we will base our learning around that. We also LOVE to read books from the library a lot more than those that were required with a curriculum. Basing our learning around subject matter our child enjoys indeed helps in not only the learning but also keeps it interesting and fun.
Evan Moore and critical thinking co. Are amazing! It gives guides to how to teach the lesson. Also, TH-cam videos are an amazing tools. Thankful to those people that take the time to upload those videos.
New friend! Thank you for sharing this! Yes, fearing the gaps & than we spend hundreds on curriculum that we don't even get through! Brain Quest is awesome❤
Thank you for this honest review. I appreciate it. My daughter is 3. She is on the purple level. She is doing well with HOP.
Do you have to pay? If so how much is it?
Thank you thank you THANK YOU!! every other video I watched was absolutely ridiculous! Like they only made it for content profit. But THIS was actually helpful!! Thank you so much!
Does brain quest has teacher guide??
I have a daughter that is 12 she hasn't been in school we're homeless im scared they take her away from me. I don't have family to support me i was molested and abused at the age of 9 if been in a deep depression .I just want my daughter to know what it feels like to be a kid 😢😢😢 I need some help and guidance 🙏
My 6 year old knows how to read well, she started reading when she was 5 and only used hooked on Phonics which I think was aggregated foundation. We didn’t use it religiously because either didn’t want to push her so we used it maybe once/twice a week and she still learned!! Highly recommend ot
I really enjoyed your video! Is it possible to still get a copy of your homeschool planner?

Thank you for the reassurance. I was becoming overwhelmed with all the programs out there. This will be our first year of homeschooling with our three boys.
I felt that so much when the shapes fell in😂😂
Yeen lying 😂😂
This was very helpful. I’m only 21 but I grew up being bullied in both public school and non-public school as a kid growing up and all my life, I’ve wanted homeschooling even in high school which I only graduated when I was 19. Not that long ago and anyway, so I’ve wanted to do homeschooling for my children in the future just to prevent all of that from happening to my kids and I’m in California so this was really helpful. I think I might do the private homeschooling option over the tutor or the other option just because I am capable of teaching. I used to teach some of the special ed kids in my classes that couldn’t understand their schoolwork and after each class, I would be like a little teacher. I also have wanted to be a stay-at-home dad that homeschools my kids because I never got the opportunity to be homeschooled when I was a kid and a teenager and I hated it. So this was really helpful. Thank you again. I don’t have any children right now, but I plan to in four years when I’m 25 because by that point I can legally start fostering and adopting at that age which is what I want to do on top of having biological kids of my own. Three biological and three adopted sound good to me. I honestly have the patience and capacity for taking care of kids and same goes for homeschooling. I just know I don’t want my kids going to school with other children from other families and risk getting discriminated against and bullied and attacked. And also the thing with school shootings nowadays have me even more scared. Like I do not want my kids going to public school or private school because I’m not religious and I’m not teaching my kids that stuff and non-public school wasn’t really helpful for me in high school so I’m just not taking the chance with my own kids. I also was adopted so that’s how I know I want to have adopted kids and biological ones. I had siblings who were my adopted parents biological children however I always wanted an adopted sibling who understood what I went through as a kid, I never got that opportunity and so I plan to do that for my kids. Anyway thank you again! This was helpful! ❤
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this program.
Thank you for this video. My 1st grade daughter is behind grade level in reading and I really want to help her this summer figure it all out. I wanted to find a program that will cover it all as I’m not sure where to start her. I feel so bad that I didn’t start sooner. I don’t know why I assumed the school/teachers were going to help her. It is my job now.
My granddaughter is struggling to read. She's going to Second grade. Where should I begin with the Hooked on Phonics? Thank you in advance.
Just wondering is Connection academy (I think it change it’s name to California Online School) would be consider to be a satellite program?????
I’m looking into Acellus Academy and doing the PSA and using them as the curriculum…. I’m in California as well moved from LA to Riverside County. Anyway what did you end up deciding?
Thank you
Thank you. I feel like I can do it.
So glad I found your channel!
Does anyone know how much it costs? Monthly, yearly?
I have a question what if we want to homeschool our niece or nephew into our home can we do that or do we need a teachers degree in order to homeschool a family members child
check into your state homeschool laws. generally I don't belive it's an issue, but double check
What if I don’t do the PSA but she is homeschooling
I would suggest you go and file it to cover yourself just in case… it’s simple and takes less than 15 mins. I did it this year with my two. If you are filing the PSA in California for the first time, you can do it anytime during that first year. (I know this because I pulled mine out of public earlier this year) After that, it has to be filled out for each subsequent year thereafter between October 1-15th. Hope this helps!
Thank you for the review
I ended up doing this for my Kindergartener to start. Scholastic workbook and some dollar tree flashcards and supplies. I still use it but have added Easy Peasy math and learn to read program which are free ❤ Workbooks and library books are definitely a great starting point or even a great way to have work samples of subjects.I plan to use Evan Moor spell and write until middle school to meet my states Grammar and spelling requirements. I prefer to focus on reading and handwriting in younger years.
Give all books
Thank you. Im working full-time and just started homeschooling a Kindergartener. We also have a toddler and want another baby 😅. Independent work and utilizing Weekends sounds like a plan!
You got this momma! I work Mondays 10 to 7 T -F 7 to 4. We have 6 kids and have been hsing for 11 years now 🎉😊
