An amazing day on the Glen Ogle trails with my wife Alannah and a few Haddington Running Club friends. This was Alannah's third marathon+ event and her second ultra after John Muir Way Ultra and the Loch Ness Marathon. Huge well done to Alannah and everyone taking part and a big thank you to the organisers and all the volunteers.

    I’m doing this next year. How is the navigation of the course? I’ve climbed Cadris before but the navigation is the part making me most nervous

    • @mattjuchniewicz2243
      @mattjuchniewicz2243 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ashleyanderson7382 Hi Ashley! The course follows well established trails/paths and some sections of roads but it's not marked. You need to carry a map/compass and be able to use them in emergency but the organisers provide a GPX file, which will keep you right on track the whole way to the finish. If your watch does not have navigation feature on it, you can download an app and do it on your phone. Obviously it's more convenient having the route on your watch snd I'd recommend investing in a decent watch. GB Ultras also do recce events in the run up to the main event, if you want to familiarise yourself with the route. All details are on the Ultra Wales website, right down at the bottom of the page. Recce runs are really good way to check out the course, before the event and you get to meet a lot of other participants before the main event. Either way, this is a fantastic event and I'm sure you'll love it!!! Good luck.

    • @mattjuchniewicz2243

    • @mattjuchniewicz2243
      @mattjuchniewicz2243 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, the course is very easy to navigate. You follow the Clyde-Forth and Union Canals, so as long as you're running by the canal you're fine. Any turns you have to take are either marked or there is a marshal there to direct you. You cannot get lost. I had a GPX running on my watch, however did not have to refer to it at all. You'll enjoy it, it's a great event 👍

      @martinscofield7477 hi Martin, thank you - glad you liked it. Totally achievable without crew, between the aid stations and drop bags you'll have sufficient nutrition and kit to complete the Race. I did it unsupported last year. The only reason I opted for a crew this year was specific dietary requirements due to my digestive system issues. The aid stations have more than enough food, including hot food and drink to get you going. I could not recommend this race enough!

      Hi Martin, thank you so much and well done on completing your first 100 miler! I ran with a few people last and this year, who had never done a 100 prior to the race. Consistency or your training and your weekly volume with back to back long runs is key. Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I used the gpx provided by the organisers and had it running on my Garmin Fenix 6XPRO Solar. I do know most of the route but still referred to my watch a lot, especially at night. I recharged my watch half way through the course whilst taking a rest (battery charger pack with my support crew). No issues with navigation whatsoever, did not have to refer to a map. Some sections are quite overgrown and the trail just disappears, and it's hard to see the marker posts, which makes it more difficult at night, as I said. Vast majority of the trail is well marked and clear to follow. Hope that helps.

      Well done and thank you! The night section was tough indeed. That Beinglas to Rowardennan scramble was brutal and for me it was at about 70 miles into the race. Half way through it I banged my head on an overhanging rock, chipped my tooth and nearly knocked myself out 🤣... As for the Ben Nevis addition, you definitely feel the initial climb for the rest of the race!

      Cheers Ross, this was a toughie indeed. You can definitely feel the Ben climb in your legs for the rest of the race. Truth be told, I've never been so fatigued after a race before, even RAS. Off work for a while now, so plenty rest. Thanks again 👍

    Congratulations! That is an insane achievement. Could you tell us more about your training for 17,500 ft of elevation gain and that sort of distance?

    • @mattjuchniewicz2243
      @mattjuchniewicz2243 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, racking up miles and elevation in training. Nothing else for it. My cumulative weekly mileage is around 60 miles and includes back to back long runs on the weekend. I train in the hills, whenever I can, work and other commitments permitting. The hillier the event, the more hills you need to do in training (calculate feet of elevation per mile or meters of elevation per km of the event you're training for and then try to replicate it in your training). That's my approach anyway and it certainly works for me. Ultra running is a very individual thing though...

    Thanks for your video report, I did the WHW challenge race but fell badly at the bottom of the Devil's Staircase and DNFed. Would love to try the Nevis section in the future.

    • @mattjuchniewicz2243
      @mattjuchniewicz2243 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! Sorry about your DNF. There are lot of very rough/rocky paths on that section and on that particular downhill it's very easily done. Hope you'll have another go and I would definitely recommend the Ben Nevis option. It definitely is a toughie. The Ben climb stings and you'll feel it for the rest of the race. It's awesome 👌

      Easy it was definitely not 🤣 but it was certainly very enjoyable! Very flat and mostly runnable course apart from a little climb at the Falkirk Wheel. You will enjoy it, great atmosphere and, as with all GB Ultras races, it's very well supported!

    • @mattjuchniewicz2243
      @mattjuchniewicz2243 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lornamc5928 I'd say, wear comfortable shoes. Don't need trail shoes for this one. If it's your first one then slow down and enjoy it. Save energy for latter stages of the race. Run your own race, don't try to keep up with the fast ones. Only person you're racing is yourself. Don't be scared to run/walk early in the race - people start fast and burn out early. Stay on top your nutrition and electrolyte intake and look after your feet. If you feel a hot spot developing, stop and put a plaster on it before it becomes a problem (have a small roll of zinc oxide tape or kt tape type in your pack just in case). Divide the course into smaller, manageable chunks. Don't think about the full distance ahead of you. Just focus on the next checkpoint. Trust your training, if you prepared well, you'll be fine. It will be painful and you'll be exhausted but you'll manage. Just keep going. Good luck and enjoy!

    Hi Matt! When you go to every station, you asked for tailwind. Do you know the strentgh? I put 2 scoops on my 500 ml flask, and I will be running this race this year...so wondering if i can count of the tailwind provide by them or if i should take all from home. Any infor really appreciated. Thanks.

    • @mattjuchniewicz2243
      @mattjuchniewicz2243 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, truth be told I'm not sure. These are pre-mixed before the event starts. I also use tailwind on my long runs but I buy sachets, so unsure how much is in 1 scoop that you use. If it's any use, I dissolve a sachet in about 750ml of water as per instructions (I think the instructions say 500-750 but I don't like it too strong) and it tastes the same as the event one. I think 1 sachet is 54g. Hope this helps. I wouldn't worry about it anyway. Between tailwind and all the salty and sweet food options provided, you will not be short for carbs or electrolytes during the event. Good luck and enjoy. It's one of my favourite Ultras!
