Red auroras are caused by solar charged particles reacting with oxygen at high altitude. Red auroras are relatively rare and are associated with times of intense solar activity.

The northern lights were particularly strong on the evening of 10 May 2024 and were visible as far south as the Trottier Observatory at Simon Fraser University. This time-lapse of the aurora compresses about 8 hours of real time to a minute of video.

This demo of a mousetrap chain reaction is analogous to nuclear chain reactions that happen in nuclear fission power plants and fission bombs.
