My key role in Scotsport's demise - Graham Spiers
มุมมอง 2.3K12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Graham Spiers writes: I loved Scotsport as a child, I watched it religiously every Sunday afternoon after church in the 1970s, and lo, I began to appear on it as a regular pundit in the 1990s, having blundered my way into sports journalism. I also, I believe, played a key role in the programme’s downfall, as I painfully recount here.

I’ve never heard such cloth eared crap ever , so by this guys logic because clubs couldn’t agree on tv revenues everything else becomes negligible….except it was only the governance of the game …tax free EBTs ..unregistered players..unpaid tax on a massive scale..all resulting in an unfair advantage . Shamefull comments

It’s so so obvious what’s up with Brendan. He hates the fact we loved Big Ange’s football more than his that’s why he weirdly went out his way to try prove to the press last season that we wa still playing the same football as under Ange when clear to anybody we wa miles off it. That’s what’s up with him. Absolutely fuming when he practically stated fans don’t have a clue about football. The moans at Celtic park aren’t for ‘recycling’ ‘changing the point of attack’ it’s when there’s clear forward passes on and they don’t get played it’s always happened there can’t still remember the boos when Lenny passed the ball to the keeper from the half way line.

The Bunnet sowed the seeds, for the sustained dominance, over the rest of Scottish football. A stadium, that year on year, provides the club with a significant financial advantage. At the time many felt Fergus had lined his pockets handsomely. I sincerely hope he did, as his vision and tenacity, where worth every thin dime.

"... he bent rules, he wasn't going to be shackled by things that football was about in those days" - WTF? You mean constrained by financial and sporting regulations that every other club was subject to and observed without exception? Roger Mitchell - what a walloper. Basically suggesting that Murray's cheating of the tax authorities and their cheating on the field (when fielding "imperfectly" registered players for many years) was an acceptable unfair sporting advantage, and it was good for the "marketing" of the game in Scotland. "David was a pirate", not really cheating, but was just because "... he was a great character of his time". The NewCo are not going bust in the same manner as OldCo because their creditors have them on a short leash, and you can guarantee that the tax authorities are closely monitoring returns and remittances from Ibrox. The Club and the Board are well aware of their limitations, however, the fans have learnt NOTHING! The Board know only too well that funding their Club to meet their unrealistic aspirations is done exclusively at the expense of their modestly wealthy directors, who collectively have sustained the average annual losses of £10M since their formation in 2012. Hilarious to then see fans protesting over a lack of ambition, criticizing the Board and staging a half-assed walkout at today's game. Priceless. What do the fans think can be done to make a meaningful change? Push the directors to throw away more money? There is a structural difference between NeWCo and Celtic courtesy of the Fergus McCann rebuild, and the disciplined management of the club ever since. Fergus was cautious and pragmatic in his process, developed a business model that was always intended for the longer term, and he certainly was not box office. This has created a gulf between the two clubs that is not easily bridged! If fan pressure is successful, then it could be the catalyst for change. Either a reality check for everybody of a Rangers persuasion, and an acceptance of their position as perennial runners-up - Espanyolification, or, the driver behind new investment. Their problem being, that there is no money to be made in Scottish football, consequently there is no credible interest from serious investors absent more certain revenues from participation in UEFA competition. NewCo cannot leverage debt, and it is highly unlikely that significant investment will materialize - quite simply, the club cannot demonstrate a reliable return on investment. As pressure builds, NewCo will doubtless be at risk of poor short term decisions, and the greatest concern for Scottish football should be that the Ibrox outfit again find themselves in jeopardy. Faced with a catastrophic event, it's hard to imagine how well prepared the governing body will be, when led by a CEO of Ian Maxwell's calibre. The SFA have watched NewCo accumulate losses of £120M without challenging them on their strategy, so the next chapter of this story could well already have been written.

2001 EBTs started , confirmed here , by a Rangers hater- Spiers . So whats your excuses now for Rangers 9iar ? Supposedly was built on money didnt have , false. Ironically , Walter's record in Europe in the 90s , apart from 1 season , was horrific . Still haunts them - to this day that Walter Smith done 9iar and then came back to win 3 on the bounce with no money , on the back of a European final . Its funny to me , that since 2012 , Rangers have won 3 domestic trophies and reached a European final - Celtic have won everything and done NOTHING in Europe . But are obsessed , utterly obsessed , with Rangers.

In the long history of Celtic FC there are many people who done great things for the club ,some achieved legendary status but only once we're we in need of saving . Fergus saved our club and I will forever be in his debt . We were one hour from the end, and he put his own money on the line with others it should be said, and should never be forgotten.

We also NEEDED saving back in January 1952 & in the weeks that followed, when there was the most evil, Masonic, anti - Irish, anti - Catholic plot to put Celtic Football Club permanently out of business for flying the Irish tricolour at Celtic Park & it was very much a close run thing that we didn't go out of business for good & we didn't because of the strong, principled, stance then Celtic Chairman Robert Kelly took on the matter & although he was not the most popular figure amongst the then Celtic support, they knew just like him, their very Irishness & their Catholicism & who they were as a community, were sought to be permanently erased by evil, hateful, Masonic bigots & so both unpopular Chairman & fans were totally united...

We were never 1 hour from the end, despite the narrative that’s been doing since. We were 1 hour from BoS applying to put Celtic into Administration, which takes about 2 weeks, and we would have come out of Administration, as there were many people waiting to help. Fergus was our best option and we’re much stronger because of him, but we were never folding as a club.

I agree with Alex, the trophies should have been stripped. However, instead they were given a 250k fine and a transfer embargo that only started after they were allowed to sign players and the transfer window had closed. The whole lord nimmo smith review into rangers use of ebt was a sham. The ruling was based on a false pretext, i.e. Rangers did not break the law and any other team could have used EBTs and DoSs without breaking tax laws. It wasn't true at the time as the DoS scheme was deemed to have been a violation and the EBTs were later proven to be operated unlawfully as well. All that being said, the worst part of this scandal is that there were people at the top of the SFA who were aware of the cheating and allowed it to continue. I should also point out that the crux of this issue is that Rangers did not declare these payments when they registered players. This meant they violated the registration rules, which meant they fielded ineligible players for well over a decade. It was a disgrace then and is still a disgrace today.

Sometimes in football, in business, in life - it's the very thing that you don't want to do that you must do to avoid the reality you dread. Fergus professionalised Celtic, he made the club into a business first and foremost. This to many was heresy and you can understand why. We feared capitlisitc change because we understand how capitalism erodes culture. And often, it felt like this is what Fergus was doing. But he had the vision to remake Celtic FC without first killing the club. It took immense sacrifice from everyone, it meant cherished principles must be shed in order to protect the primary principle, Celtic FC's flourishment. It's a point of immense irony that Celtic's tormenters at the time, are now the tormented. And now they are reckoning with their culture, their existence and their future. Now THEY desperately need a leader like Fergus, but where do you find a character so rare? I have no idea, but i'll tell you where you don't find him, in a local masonic social club with any of the current ownership group.
