Have you ever seen the trick where someone pulls a tablecloth out from under a bunch of dishes without breaking them? Have you ever wondered how this is possible?
This experiment is a similar and less expensive trick that will surely impress your friends and teach them about inertia at the same time.
MATERIALS:
1 pitcher of water
1 plastic cutting board OR post card OR stiff cardboard
1 cardboard tube OR paper towel roll
1 orange OR clementine
Inertia is a property of matter that causes it to resist changes in velocity (speed and/or direction). According to Newton's first law of motion, an object with a given velocity maintains that velocity unless acted on by an external force.
In this case, the inertia of the orange / clementine is so great because of its weight that it is not carried along with the fast movement. The light cardboard tube, on the other hand, flies off because its inertia is low.
