When possible, you want to have a few frames with drawn comb (or at least foundation) in the box before you knock the bees into it. That gives them a place to stay, is attractive to the queen, and feels like "home". It reduces the immediate attempts to migrate out of the box and go back where they were.
Thank you for the tip!
Two suggestions. 1. Rotate your camera so you are not shooting vertically. It makes for a better view for folks watching on a computer or tablet. 2. When inspecting frames, you should take the first frame out and put it aside for the duration of the inspection. It gives you more room to slide the other nine frames around when taking them out and putting them back in. They actually sell frame holders that hook on the edge of the frame for this but I usually just sit mine against the inner cover on the ground. Never had an issue with that. Congrats on the new girls. They seem very gentle compared to the Africanized bees we deal with out here in the southwest. Suits and gloves are absolutely required around here.
Thank you! I’ve already switched to widescreen filming, uploaded one today in widescreen. Going forward, all will be in widescreen. I do have a frame holder for each hive I guess I was just excited to do my first inspection and forgot to bring them out there and use them. I think I was also a little nervous about potentially the queen being on that frame and her dropping off the frame in the frame holder onto the ground. I’ll give the frame holders a try when I inspect this week. Thank you for the tips!
Very interesting, from someone who knows nothing about bee keeping. Do the beetles or their lava cause any harm in the hive?
Yes, they can do a lot of damage in a hive and if the infestation is bad enough it can cause the bees to abscond and leave the hive to search for a new home.
