In 2018, I retired from a 29-year teaching job. That fall, I homeschooled my older son and on Feb. 24, 2019, we left Springer Mtn., GA to hike the Appalachian Trail to Maine. Unfortunately, we didn't go far enough, fast enough, and in early August we got off trail 1,325 miles to the north and just inside of New Jersey. We've had time to think about what we can do differently, and we're excited to be heading back out in early February for our 2024 Do-Over Hike! Please join us along our journey. My goal is to post daily vlogs, and I will also be blogging on my website.
AT Thru Hike Days 196-197: The Trip Home!
Day 196 of our trip was spent sightseeing in and around Millinocket. We made a family trip back to Abol Bridge so the family could see Katahdin. The next day we had a midday flight back to North Carolina. Thanks so much for following our journey. Please stay tuned for some other post-trail videos coming soon.

AT Thru Hike Day 195: Katahdin Stream Campground to Baxter Peak
มุมมอง 1.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today’s 5.2 mile hike to Baxter Peak at the top of Katahdin was brutally steep and rocky in places, but thankfully, we had adrenaline on our side. Words cannot describe the elation we felt when we passed through the tablelands and got our first glimpse of the sign at the peak. We took the Abol Trail down. It turned out to be a near-vertical rock scramble for quite a ways, but we made it down sa...

We had planned to hike into Baxter State Park and stay at The Birches, a site set aside for thru hikers, but we were gifted the use of a site at Katahdin Stream Campground by another group of hikers so we didn’t have to get up super early. Our next to last day was a fairly easy 10.2 miles and we got to the campsite in the early afternoon. Blog: robduncan.net Lighter Pack: lighterpack.com/r/cn4c...

We used today as a set-up day to position ourselves to enter Baxter State Park tomorrow. There are only twelve spaces set aside for thru hikers so we stopped at a campground after only 3.2 miles. That way we’d have only half a mile or so to go tomorrow to enter Baxter to hopefully secure one of those spots. Blog: robduncan.net Lighter Pack: lighterpack.com/r/cn4cp9 Facebook: robert...

The highlights of today’s 11.2 mile hike included lakes, streams, and more views of Mt. Katahdin. The trip was rooty, but very flat with the exception of a slight ascent to Rainbow Ledges. Today’s 13.7 is the longest hiking day of our last week. We didn’t rush to get up and get out and had a good day. We had several great views of Katahdin along the way. Today’s 12.2 mile hike was the flattest and least encumbered trek that we’ve done in Maine. We wound up at the shelter with friends of friends from home which was unexpected. AT Thru Hike Day 189: Zero Day at Shaw’s Hiker Hostel
มุมมอง 5302 หลายเดือนก่อน
Because of the weather and the. Red to re-plan the last days of our hike, we took a zero day at Shaw’s in Monson. We ate well, visited the ATC visitor’s center, and arranged a shuttle back to the trail. As best as I can figure, I hiked 18.2 miles in the remnants of Hurricane Debby to Monson, ME. Along the way I crossed several swollen creeks and brooks that are usually calf deep that, because of the rain, were rushing waist deep. Today’s hike of 18.7 miles started with a great breakfast of a dozen pancakes, sausage, and eggs at the Harrison’s Pierce Pond Camp. We had planned a 20 mile day but we got backed up at the canoe ferry across the Kennebec River which cost us two hours. We hiked 16 miles today to a gorgeous sunset at Pierce Pond. Today’s hike was the “flattest” hike we’ve had in quite a while. Even though we got a late start, we got to the shelter by around. 6:00. Today’s hike was 17 miles up and over the Bigelows. The West Peak and Avery Peak are our last 4,000-footers until we hit Katahdin. We’re finally out of “southern Maine” and our trail for the next several days should flatten out a bit as we make our way toward the 100-mile wilderness. AT Thru Hike Day 184: Crocker Cirque Campsite to ME-27/Stratton
มุมมอง 5262 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today’s hike was a short 7.3 miles. The first mile up South Crocker was steep and rocky. Getting over North Crocker was less arduous, but the trip down was rocky and rooty. I fell twice and broke one of my poles. We ended the day at the Maine Roadhouse Hostel, where I was able to cobble together a new pole until I can get a replacement piece shipped in. Not sure when you will even see this as I am aware you live in Western North Carolina. After the recent absolute disaster, your family came to mind. My wife and I pray for you and all your neighbors. We live just over the mountain in Bristol Va and were spared any hardship. If you happen to see this and there is anything we can do let us know. I feel confident that you guys can weather this horrific situation, as well or better than most. Prayers your way our friends.
I also thought of them and pray They are safe.
I have a question. While you were in the area did you see a black lab with/without a green pack?
Hi. This is important. When did you visit the Walnut shelter
YAY!!!🎉 what a feat!!!
Reading Walden? Bah, humbug. Read Thoreau's book The Maine Woods; it's fascinating and now that you've been atop Katahdin, will strike a few chords within you.
@@mink5 I’ve just downloaded it in audio format. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hey Man. Thanks for including me in your video and I hope you have enjoyed getting home and eating! Great journey and congrats on your summit. Rock N Roll!
Big Congratulations to y’all!🎉
Building memories...Congratulations!!!
Congratulations y’all! What an awesome accomplishment!😊❤
Sure going to miss tagging along with you on the AT every day, but so happy y’all made it safely.
Just like in The Wizard of Oz - "There's no place like home" - Very happy for you all. Thank you for doing this follow up video. Can't wait to see what you do next. I would definitely like to support your endeavors.
Congratulations 🎉😊
Enjoyed your daily videos. Well put together for being busy on trail. Enjoy your homecoming and post hike decompression.
Why in the world the flight taking off and landing made me cry?
Enjoyed your adventures enormously!
Congratulations on your through hike!!! I have enjoyed following along with you two on your journey, best of luck.
So happy you guys are home.
Nothing like home sweet home. 😊
I guess like PTSD you will be reliving this for years to come lol
I think it is amazing that our feet and our bodies and our mind can carry us 2k miles in under 200 days . Congratulations on the climb AND ON YPUR RETIREMENT! Pour yourself a second cup in the morning.
Do you need a permit to climb Katahdin? How much? When did you get it?
Glad you are sharing a video beyond your hike! I know you both are glad to be with your family as well as them being with you both! Keep us updated every now and then with a video beyond the trail when you can. I live in Georgia and originally from Greenville SC not far from NC Thanks again for carrying us along! Continue prayers for you all everyday!
So happy for you and Hawkeye. Congratulations. I truly enjoyed watching your journey. Best of luck.
Questions for a livestream? How have your bodies changed both during and a few weeks after? Teens require 2 to 4 hours more sleep than adults and also have newly minted youth. How was your hiking compatibility or did you both make amicable compromises? Would you do it again? Other trails in your future? What did you guys carry and what was your average pack weights? Why no Knife Edge? Best magic? Meet any scary people? What do you two think of each other now or, have you changed or grown closer? You guys have each other but what are you doing to avoid post trail depression? Do you foresee any changes in how you integrate back into "normal" life? How has Hawkeye's plans for the future changed?
As Dorothy said there's no place like home .I have to say again thanks for taking us along on your hike.Keep the vids coming and I'll keep watching.❤
❤
Months and months to hike to Maine and 2 1/2 hours to fly home to NC. There’s no place like home!
I love that I think it is SO amazing isn’t it !
I'm at school, getting ready for my first day with students. Love to watch now, but I'll wait for my wife tonight, so we can watch together. Congratulations.
So Thankful you all Are home safe. What a Journey. Look forward to your upcoming journeys to come… I enjoyed following you and Hawkeye . Wishing you all “Happy Trails” along the Way. 🙏💪🐾🦋🍄🐿🦌🌄🎉❤
Can’t wait for follow-ups! Rest and recoup, guys!!! (P.S. what was your summit date?)

Congratulations on completing your thru hike.
Congrats guys, I camped with y'all on Easter weekend at Jenny Knob Shelter when your friend hiked you in some Subway. I'm from neighboring Wilkes County. I've got some catching up to do on your videos but happy for you guys that you made it.
Awesome accomplishment!
