I remember watching Roche's post-TDF parade in Dublin from my office window in Ely Place. My first job - I was 18. Thousands of fans everywhere and Roche was on his open-topped bus. Sean Kelly had made cycling huge in Ireland by then but Roche stepped it up a level in 87 and even Kelly knew he was in his shadow. Great memories.

The only time the irish don't insult people who live or were born here is when their skin is a different colour. That's the only thing the so called traitor irish worry about is the magic spell word "racist" even if it means they sleep on the streets which the irish do, go to dublin its like an outdoor camping festival of irish homeless. Stephen put my country on the global stage, have some respect for him and his legacy.

@@neilplatt1111 I alwayr s wished Roche would have stayed just one more year. Carrera had offered him a good contract for that season. He still had a lot of fight in him. But i believe the drugs in sport was getting worse. That explains why the racing was so fast. Cycling was exciting back then. Its utter, utter, utter shit now. Disguising looking racing bikes that look like mountain bikes and skinny gay men who survive on a diet of peanuts and soya milk. I guess thats to save the planet 😂. Remember Merkx and Freddy Martins eat steaks before a race. Not like the snow flakes today.

A cheat, a liar, a doper. 59 years old with 4 kids and lying to their faces every day. He played that whole jolly leprechaun with a pint of Guinness image for all it was worth. When it came down to the real test of character, the decision about what kind of athlete he was going to be - he caved in and went the way of the needle like 99% of the rest in his filthy sport. The guy was a Conconi client, he didn't come cheap and riders didn't pay what they did for advice on nutrition or tyre pressures. Roche is a complete fraud who hides behind the same old excuses. He's fortune to have competed in a era with limited testing and minimum IT records. He's welcome to his fake World title and his Tour along with all that La Plagne nonsense. It pays the bills eh Stephen ?!
