As the results of Maxine's achievements there are so many people who are now standing on her shoulders and breaking new barriers. 👏🏿 Maxine herself is standing on the shoulders of her father, who was one of the early Windrush pioneers working on Sheffield's buses. 😡 The extent of the direct racism faced by him and his colleagues is seldomly told and frequently overlooked. Such racism daily experienced by many from bus passengers, work colleagues and even their own trade union. . August 1956, saw 600 of their work colleagues voting to take industrial action to force the City Council to stop recruiting anymore 'colored workers' as bus conductors. 👍🏿 Sheffield's Council took a principled stance and resisted. ✊🏿 Unlike other councils and bus companies elsewhere in the UK. As 1963 saw a bus boycott by the 'West Indian' community in Bristol alongside other Bristolians. This eventually forced the 'Bristol Omnibus Company' to drop its colour bar and recruit Black and Asian bus conductors (Black bus drivers would take a little longer). 🤜🏿 The majority of our Windrush pioneers were involved in personal and at times collaborative struggles against racism and injustice. 🙏🏿 TODAY itis on THEIR shoulders that WE ALL now STAND.

As Sheffield's first Black female bus driver, on her shoulders so many stand. 👍🏿 Maxine herself is also standing on the shoulders of men like her father who had previously worked on the buses. 😢 He alongside many Windrush pioneers during the 1950s faced direct racism from passengers, their work colleagues and even their own trade union. 😨 August 1956, saw 600 of their colleagues in Sheffield Transport Department, voting to take industrial action, demanding that the City Council cease from employing, 'no more coloured workers' on the buses. 👏🏿 The City Council refused to be forced into this action. Other councils and bus companies throughout the UK were not as principled. ✊🏿 In Bristol this resulted with the 1963 bus boycott by the local West Indian Community and their Bristolian supporters. This four month boycott resulted with the Bristol Omnibus Company being forced to eventually recruit us. 🙏🏿 So many overlooked and forgotten Windrush pioneers, were leading personal and at times collaborative struggles against racism and injustice at work and in their everyday lives. It is on THEIR shoulders we ALL stand. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
