أيا مَن يدّعي الفَهمْ … إلى كمْ يا أخا الوهمْ
O you who claim to understand… How long will you remain in delusion, O brother of illusion?
تُعبّي الذّنْبَ والذمّ … وتُخْطي الخَطأ الجَمّ
You fill your days with sins and blame… And commit countless errors.
أمَا بانَ لكَ العيبْ … أمَا أنذركَ الشيبْ
Have your flaws not been revealed? Has your grey hair not warned you?
وما في نُصحِه ريبْ … ولا سمعُك قد صمّ
There is no doubt in His (Allah’s) advice… Yet, have your ears become deaf?
أمَا نادَى بكَ الموتْ … أمَا أسْمَعَك الصوتْ
Has death not called upon you? Have you not heard its voice?
أما تخشَى من الفوتْ … فتَحْتاطَ وتهتمّ
Do you not fear missing your chance? Why don’t you prepare and care?
فكمْ تسدَرُ في السهوْ … وتختالُ من الزهوْ
For how long will you wander in heedlessness… And boast in arrogance?
وتنصبُّ إلى اللهوْ … كأنّ الموتَ ما عمّ
You immerse yourself in amusement… As if death does not affect all.
وحَتّامَ تجافيكْ … وإبطاءُ تلافيكْ
How long will you delay repentance… And turn away from seeking forgiveness?
طباعاً جمعتْ فيكْ … عيوباً شملُها انضمّ
Your nature has gathered within you… Defects combined in one.
إذا أسخَطْتَ مولاكْ … فما تقلقُ من ذاكْ
If you anger your Lord… Do you not worry about it?
وإنْ أخفَقتَ مسعاكْ … تلظّيتَ من الهمّ
If your efforts fail… You burn with anxiety.
وإنْ لاحَ لكَ النقشْ … منَ الأصفرِ تهتشّ
If you see gold coins… You rejoice and rush.
وإن مرّ بكَ النعشْ … تغاممتَ ولا غمّ
But when a funeral passes by… You act as if it’s nothing of concern.
تُعاصي النّاصحَ البرّ … وتعتاصُ وتزورّ
You disobey the righteous advisor… And you avoid and deviate.
وتنقادُ لمن غرّ … ومن مانَ ومن نمّ
Yet you follow those who deceive, flatter, and slander.
وتسعى في هوى النفسْ … وتحتاط إلى الخمسْ
You chase the desires of your soul… Yet you only care about wealth.
وتنسى ظلمةَ الرمسْ … ولا تذكرُ ما ثمّ
You forget the darkness of the grave… And fail to remember what lies ahead.
ولو لاحَ لكَ الغيبْ … لاستحيتَ من العيبْ
If the unseen were shown to you… You would be ashamed of your flaws.
وبادرتَ إلى التوبْ … وقطعتَ غُرورَ الوهمْ
You would hasten to repentance… And abandon the delusion of pride.
أيا مَن يدّعي الفَهمْ … إلى كم يا أخا الوهمْ
O you who claim to understand… How long will you remain in delusion, O brother of illusion?
