Pressure washing is far too powerful for marble headstones. Marble is actually a soft stone and the grime and growth can get below the surface of the stone. If you try to power wash, you will remove more stone. The hand washing helps to get rid of the grime that is on the surface and the D-2 cleans and kills the rest.

I don’t understand. You would use a laser device to clean headstones, or you literally use a laser device to clean headstones. If it is the latter, I would be interested in seeing a demonstration of this on YT.

No need. The orvus and D2 are safe for human contact.

I use Orvus WP for the scrub and treat with D-2 at the end. There was an excellent discussion about products with Atlas Preservation that was posted on TikTok. There was some concern about the over use of Orvus as it is a surfactant as is D2, but if over used could end up harming or blocking what the biocide in the D2 would do. I have always had good luck in my limited experience with the combo, but I also use a lot of water. The idea of wet and forget was also raised and although it works, and no one seems concerned about the effect on the stone, there was concern about a persons exposure and long term health.

We don't. Although there are many advocates of Wet and Forget, it has not been approved by the cemetery conservators and National Park Service. As our goal is to do no harm, we use what we know is safe. If you are cleaning your family stones and you know they are granite, it is likely you won't have any issues. Marble is another matter and I would play it safe.

Like d2 wet and forget has been tested and approved by the American Cemetery Administration. If the headstone or marker displays biological growth (algae, mildew, moss, lichens), water with a product formulated for cleaning these growths may be required. Examples include: Prosoco ReVive, Cathedral Stone Bio-Cleaner, Wet and Forget, and D/2 Biological Solution.

@@davidgabrielsen2139 I wanted to follow up on this as there was an excellent discussion on the LadyTaphos tiktok about the use of Orvus, D2 and W/F. W/F is approved, with a lengthy list of precautions due to its toxicity to humans and the need for protective gear. That is enough to cause me concern.

We have the permission of the Town Board. I can sit on the bucket I use to carry everything, but sometimes the ground is easier!

This section of the old canal is dry. There are parts of the enlarged canal that do have water, such as in Camillus or the Dewitt section over to New Loundon. Out west the enlarged canal was used as the route for the current version of the Erie canal. It is spotty.

The original Erie Canal was built (1817 -> 1825) It was only four feet deep. Over the years upgrandes, new locks, etc. were built. Also, other canal routes were built that joined the Erie canal. These older sections are no longer used but since the local small creeks were often channeled into the canal; those places still have water There is a state-sponsored canal trailway that runs on top of the old towpaths. It is popular for hiking and biking. The " *Canalway trail - Erie Canal -Empire* (State) *Trail* "is easy to find on maps. (You might have to use the enlarge feature on the map) Empire State Trail[1] After the 1903 -> 1918 upgrades that widened, and deepened (to 12 feet) the canal. The canal was renamed the " *Barge Canal* " to differentiate the working canal from the old abandoned tracts of the orginal Erie Canal ..... *Since by the early 20th century animals were* *no longer used to drag the barges* A direct route from (south of) Rome, NY was dug directly to the eastern side of Oneida lake (@ Sylvan Beach, NY), making the Oneida lake part of the canal system (the canal resumes on the western side of Oneida lake, at Brewerton, NY, where the Oswego and the (modern) Erie canals join. In addition to using Oneida lake; upgraded channels were created that went to the towns (between Rome, NY and Syracuse, NY) where industries had requested to retain the canal. The current in use sections of the canal between Oneida Lake and Rome as well as the enlargement that went along the area where the old canal bed was located is marked as " *Pools Brook* " on modern maps. It is straight and wide. Check it out on Google maps -- Just type in Rome, NY and look at the southern section of the city. The now ERIE CANAL was no longer englarged and "modernized" since the 1970's. But the canals are still maintained. The canal's surviving sections are used for recreation. (You can even rent boats to take on the canal as well as booking trips on a tourboat) The closed sections have the " *Canalway Trail - Erie Canal -Empire* (State) *Trail* Working sections of the canal are part of the *Empire State* *Trail* [1] In 1992 the entire canal system was renamed the " *New York State Canal System* " [2] with each individual canal (still in use) reverting to it's original name.
