Loose Article Policies Need To Change at Major Amusement Parks!
Safety regulations are often written in blood, and enough blood has been spilt at amusement parks over loose articles. It is time for major parks to ban phones, keys, wallets, ect on guests entering lines for major attractions. Every passholder and ticketed guest should be provided a locker, free of any extra charge, and movable, for their valuables going forward. This follows a grisly accident where a guest hopped the fence to Banshee at Kings Island and got struck by the train while trying to find his car keys.

The Six FUN Coasters at Indiana Beach and the TERRIBLE All American Triple Loop

The worst ride queue, Steel Vengeance and a greater discussion on metal detection at Cedar Point

Loose articles and cell phones on amusement park rides is a growing issue. To combat this, Cedar Point has implemented mandatory lockers and metal detection on Steel Vengeance and Top Thrill 2. Michigans Adventure - Cedar Fair's Neglected Park
มุมมอง 56ปีที่แล้ว
Michigans Adventure is commonly cited as the worst Cedar Fair owned amusement park. I have visited multiple times, but I primarily want to discuss my visit from June 10th 2023 and Cedar Fair's mind boggling lack of investment in this busy park. There is so much that needs done here, from deferred maintenance on rides to a new coaster, something they haven't seen for over 15 years.

    I agree with the safety concerns but not with requiring riders to store belongings in lockers before they get in line. Velicoaster at Universal and Tron at Disney have lockers at the end of the queue, just before you enter the station. This way you can have your phone with you in line and then store it when it's time to ride. Nobody wants to wait an hour or more without their phone. They have attendants ensuring guests don't bring loose articles onto the ride with this system as well. And the lockers are double-sided so you exit on the opposite side and retrieve your belongings. All the advantages of lockers without forcing people to part with their phones.

    • @TheCoasterSerpent

      I am looking at this from the perspective of my home park, Cedar Point. Universal and Disney work like well oiled machines, Cedar Point has consistent staffing issues. I do not believe that park would be able to staff many of their rides during the spring and fall seasons when their seasonal labor isn't available. Another problem with that is space and redesigning existing line queues. They have done a poor job with this in the past with Steel Vengeance, and their implementation of in line lockers on that ride leaves a lot to be desired. Metal Detection often can't get guests thru fast enough, resulting in dispatches with empty rows while lines are over an hour long. That is why I suggest just giving attendants at the entrances to lines wands, and with instructions to yell out locker instructions to guests coming and stopping those who obviously have phones and other stuff on them.

  • @GoodEnoughEngineering

    Steel vengeance "SteVe" has lockers you can pay for across from the entry way of the queue. I support the use of upcharge lockers. We go for 12-13 hour days in just about every park we go to. The only thing on me is the unlimited drink wrist band, a locker wristband (depending on the park), and a credit card in a zipped or buttoned pocket. The person I normally go with, we are normally on our phone all day type of people, so going to the park and leaving them locked up for hours is kind of nice to be honest.

      I have a better experience when I use the paid lockers rather than the free in line lockers. TT2 made me realize that metal detecting at the entrance to rides was the way to go. Folks. Fast pass doesn’t mean front of line. The line design doesn’t matter It is the number of people in line. Metal detectors take time. I had a metal belt buckle and got the wand. The wand is the issue. Just rode it 6 times last week. Do a take about maverick. That is the worst I have ever experienced plus it breaks every few hours and screws the people waiting

    • @TheCoasterSerpent
      @TheCoasterSerpent วันที่ผ่านมา

      The fast lane join being so far back is a minor annoyance, but all the same it is the furthest back join in the park for really no good reason. The main issue, and the reason for the video is the constant dispatches with empty rows due to metal detection not getting guests through fast enough. Also, the area around metal detection is a nightmare with people trying to go every which way, jostling by to get to and from the lockers. See the diagrams in the video. Maverick has been terrible this year, with even the fast lane getting over a 30 min wait. The capacity is terrible on that ride.

    • @RNC-7-15
      @RNC-7-15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheCoasterSerpent I understand. I do believe it is the metal detector placement. When I rode last week there were no empty seats on trains. Maybe just inexperienced staff at detectors. It is confusing at detectors but that didn’t create empty seats. There are at least 100 or more people after detectors waiting in line. And fast pass doesn’t mean first in line. I get it is back aways but for those of us regular paying people. It works out fine. Gatekeeper is not to the front either. If you are advocating for fast pass to the front. That is a different argument. I was there three days so I saw it all. I paid for one time fast pass only to find out only 50 folks were in line on Stevie at that time. So I got a bit annoyed. And you don’t even mention that right lane as you go up steps holds twice as many people. So right lane gets screwed. If you didn’t notice that. You are not a seasoned rider. Sorry. My two cents. Maverick is still the suckiest ride wait in the whole park. Broke every single day and one day the ride was closed most of the day. After we waited 1 hour and 30 minutes in line. I love the ride. Hate the wait

      This is my home park, and what I see quite often. I don't mention the left line, because that line extends into the locker area with the guests waiting to get to metal detection from using the lockers. They seem to want to keep the left side for in line locker guests and the right line for those not needing them, though I don't believe there is anything keeping you from hopping over to the other line.

    SFGAdv in 2016 had a system where employees would check pockets and if you didn't have at least one pocket that is zippered, you were sent to the lockers unless there was nothing in your pockets. There should at least be something like that because not having your phone is bad like what if a friend or family member gets sent to the hospital or an emergency comes up like if I'm out of town and there was an earthquake that damaged my town?

    do you know where you do NOT HEAR about lose articles? Island's of Adventure and Universal Studios!. Cedar Fair needs to adopt this 1- lockers need to be free and large enough to hold Fannie packs, cell phones and keys for riders. 2- this needs to be enforced by a ride attendant Once people know what to expect with no loose articles, they will abide and honestly, i didn't miss the articles while waiting. Furthermore, the one thing i have always been afraid of losing, my keys, i have never actually had happen but would be horrified to experience. Steel Force at Dorney Park has a unique bin system with shelves that coincide with which train you are riding. A shelf for the red train, one for the blue train, and one for the black train, and most of the time Steel Force is two train ops. Once the guests put their belongings on the shelf that coincides with their train, the ride attendants slides the door that is covering the train that is approaching the final brakes, to the train that is about to leave the station. As someone who worked at Six Flags New England last season as a ride operator while I was attending technical school in the area, I can tell you how many times people still lost their phones due to them being so dumb enough to take it out after the train has left the station, thinking that the operators and attendants wouldn't notice. I can stress enough of how the security team must have felt overwhelmed of getting reports from ops saying that guests were taking phones out mid ride or jumping the fences to retrieve lost items. One such case last year at that same park while I was attending as a guest, when I was about to get in line for Wicked Cyclone they had to shut the ride down due to someone jumping the fence to retrieve a season pass card, YES, A SEASON PASS CARD WHILE YOU CAN ALSO HAVE IT ON YOUR PHONE, like, you had to shut the ride down just for a card for your season pass which you can have through your phone.

Those who are on the rides when these things happen have mental scars forever as well, and someone other than the parties witness to these horrific events need to be made aware of how dangerous this has gotten, and how bold and "safe" people think they are. One vid about this alleged that the man was warned not to go through, entered through an employee door, and was struck. If this is so, ALL DOORS ACCESSING THE RESTRICTED AREAS OF THE RIDE NEED TO BE LOCKED DURING OPERATION.(emphasized only.) Regardless, those employees have to deal with that for the rest of their lives as well. Its a loss for all involved.

    Yukon Striker has the perfect solution, I hear. I was talking about a moveable bin, that corresponds with the trains. Its there right before you load to put your stuff in just before you board, then it rotates so no one can get to your stuff, and it allows for the next train. Then its on the exit side of the platform when you pull back in so you can grab your stuff. The person said "oh so just like Yukon Striker?" Its perfect. You carry everything up on the platform with you, and you dont ride with anything, knowing that no one will have access to it until your train comes back to the station.

They write your boarding time down and add whatever the current wait time is after that so it was 2 hours. We proceeded to wait and tried to get her on two trains and the ride ops said let's get this block off for extra leg room to get her in .. The ride ops got the key stuck, called maintenance and the train was put out of service for the rest of the day, come to find out that they only have ONE copy of the key which I told the supervisor is just dumb because now she can't get her on ANY of the trains... So I told my wife, I love you and I'll help her on every ride except Steel Vengeance.... The part you didn’t mention is how they try to scam a few extra dollars off you by scaring people into paying for a locker before entering the line. If I remember correctly there is no clear statement that free lockers are available in the line queue.

    I respect the Lose article policy at these parks, matter fact they need to enforce this policy on every coaster well!!! the more extreme one's. I remember losing my car keys on superman ultimate flight and great adventure, all because I decided to place my car keys in my jacket button pocket and some how, they manage to fall out and I think they fell out during the bottom of the pretzel loop. The ride ops told us that we would have to wait for the park to close and someone will go back and check but, I used to be a ride op decades ago so I knew these new breeds of ride ops was not going to do no such thing. After waiting almost 2 hours in the ran for another friend to head back to the park and pick us up, I had to leave my car in the parking lot, go to the dealership the next day and get a new key fob which cost me $200, and ever since then, I purchase a locker and place EVERTHING in it. Lesson learned. I do like velocicoaster locker system, it's pretty efficient. Steel Vengeance whole queue system if horrible and I dreed it every time I get in line ugghhh. I skipped it last year because of the long wait time, downtime and f**** up queue locker system.

    First off it takes one bonehead to ruin it for everyone which has already happened. 2. CP is liable period. If they weren’t then you would be able to take whatever you want on the ride. 3. CP knows that due to the intensity of the ride anything on a person is LIABLE to fly off! CP tells you this before even entering the line. Plan accordingly!?!?! 🤦🏻‍♂️ o and the metal detectors yea they do what they are supposed to do. Metal belt buckles yup. Piercings visible and none visible yup.

    Yes the queue design as a whole is horrible ...However if people followed the rules,obeyed the many signs stating no loose articles the line would move smoother....Seriously why do peoole ignore the signs and show up with phones,key,bags etc etc..Empty your pockets as instructed..it's not hard

    I left my wallet and phone in the car in preparation for this policy. And I secured my rental car key fob to a belt loop on my pants using a key ring. While the fob did set off the metal detector, the Cedar Point employee looked at how I secured it and let me go through. Overall, it was a bit of a nerve-wracking experience.

  • @justinvinyard440
    @justinvinyard440 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Even the fast lane line has the worst merge point on Steel Vengeance and Millennium Force. What makes it more worse is that Cedar Point is overselling too many fast lane wristbands and not severely limiting them to be sold out causing fast lines jammed to 30 mins or like a hour wait and its not worth it. I'm not going to Cedar Point until they find improvement for their fast lane. Cedar point must severely limit fast lane so their sold out, must build new stairs, paths to the stations so longer merging for Raptor, Millennium, Magnum, Rougarou or modifying the tunnel line with two lines for normal and fast line to the station on Steel Vengeance. If they make those improvements then people would be waiting lesser in the fast line and instantly walk on to the attractions with no more waiting even marathon a ride. I wouldn't be surprised if Cedar Point gets rid of the PLUS option just like Kings island, Carowinds, Kings Dominion and Dorney Park.

    If they put the lockers in a better location for SV, it will be much further from the station and you will be without your phone for a longer time. The line works fine enough and FREE enough, the way it is other than metal detectors. Obviously, they can't use the same ones as the front gate unless those could be set to a much higher sensitivity since those allow keys, cellphones and wallets to get through. As far as TT2 goes, another object flying from the ride that nearly killed someone would be worse for the park than listening to people whining about paying for lockers. The only system I see working, easily, for TT2 would be a Yukon Striker system. The location of the track and the exit for TT2 limits, greatly, where free lockers could go and be easily accessible once the ride is over.

    • @TheCoasterSerpent
      @TheCoasterSerpent หลายเดือนก่อน

      The diagram I showed of the modification to the queue keeps the lockers in the same location, it gets rid of the tunnel and feeds guests directly to the lockers after the current fast lane join. The way TT2 does things, lines move faster. There is no metal detection right before the station to slow down the movement of lines, resulting in rows being dispatched empty while there is over an hour wait in line. I haven't been to Canadas Wonderland, but I could care less about not having my phone in line when things are moving faster and I am at an amusement park to enjoy rides, not social media.

    I think as long as you have zippered pockets, you should not have to get a locker. I've been getting on rollercoasters for many years now and never lost anything that was secured in a zippered pocket.

    • @TheCoasterSerpent
      @TheCoasterSerpent หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wear zipped pockets too, and same, they have been a wonderful investment. Have known a few people who have had their stuff float out of their pockets on rides. They learned the hard way. Cedar Point could make a killing by putting their brand and coasters on zipped pocket shorts and spreading the word.

  • @Duffster115

    Personally I think there should be no other loose article policy then the typical loose article bins or a free locker just before getting on the ride, for I know loose articles are a huge danger, but a phone is not going to do any damage in a queue line, so why ban it there? Also what’s more simple then putting your stuff that isn’t secured in a bin? No metal detectors needed, no makeing up charge attractions by makeing people pay for a locker that stupidly is required, and no loose article problems, honestly why did parks ever switch away from those older, and way better loose article policy’s

    • @TheCoasterSerpent
      @TheCoasterSerpent หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see a couple of problems with bins. Firstly, they slow down operations. Having guests immediately board a train and get secured at an extremely busy park like Cedar Point will immensely help with keeping those lines moving. I know Knotts has a terrible reputation with Ghost Rider and how long it takes trains to dispatch. I even see it at Cedar Point on rides like Raptor. People often complain about how that ride brings you to a sudden stop at the end and faster operations with no bins would help with the trains constantly setting up. Secondly, there is an issue with theft of guest items. Once were being asked to put our wallets and car keys in a bin, I immediately don't trust that situation.

    • @Duffster115
      @Duffster115 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheCoasterSerpent there are ways to solve those issues without implementing worse policy’s for the theft one just throw a cover and a lock on it like what have been typically done for coasters with 2 trains, if only one train is running you should be able to see it if someone tries and yell at them or whatever or call security or whatever and get the problem solved. For the slow down on operations, from my experience with Kennywood it’s not that much at all or at least it doesn’t feel like to me that that process takes that much more time to be a big deal, and if it is then put those bins, or even more secure free lockers just before the station, or just before getting on. As long as up you can have your phone and other loose articles for the queue, and you don’t have to pay for something like lockers, it’s ok. I mention the bins most because it’s simile, cheap, easy, and effective, and lastly it’s what I have experience with and it’s way better than throwing everything in a locker that may or may not cost money and waiting hours with nothing, and better hope there isn’t some reason you need contact somebody or somebody needs to contact you, for that’s not happening when you can’t have your phone in a place where having your phone isn’t going to cause any harm

    • @TheCoasterSerpent
      @TheCoasterSerpent หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Duffster115 Kennywood is actually the park where I was with a friend who had his stuff taken after putting it in the box by Thunderbolt. Then the ride ops have to deal with that guest, having to call security and deal with that when guests are waiting in line to ride. At a park like Cedar Point, I really feel the antics of the stupidest 1% come back to bite us all in the butt. I visited last Thursday and in the 5 hours I was there, I saw Magnum stopped twice on the lift and a phone was lying on Raptor's stairwell halfway up the lift. People just don't follow the rules and its a detriment to us all. As for not having a phone while in the line, I can deal with this even as a single rider most of the time attending without a friend. We are all too attached to our phones, and I fully understand that many people have issues going on at home, but people were able to deal with that before cell phones were a thing. Using Raptor again as an example, the ride came out and featured a mid course brake run so that they could run 3 trains, keeping them continuously moving with one on the lift, one finishing the 2nd half, and one loading. The bins stop the ops from efficiently loading trains. The ride regularly gets over an hour wait.

      In a lot of cases, its all about the $$$. But in some, its safety and theft related. Im sure the parks get a lot of complaints every day about the locker situations.

      Never once did I argue that there shouldn't be a policy, in fact, I advocated for a stricter policy using movable lockers. I argued for better operations by having guests board with nothing on them, resulting in faster moving lines and a policy that isn't different for every ride.

    My first and only visit to CP was just before the strict loose articles policy - had no issues taking my phone in the queue. I did do a "roaming locker" for the day though to drop my goods off before getting in line - would it be more effective just to not deal with the SV-specific lockers and just use my normal locker? Still sounds absolutely terrible, bunch of humans in a cage (with the night time spiders)
