Washington Irving: A Traveling American Author of Accomplishment
Washington Irving is considered one of the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe and substantiate writing as a legitimate profession. He was raised in Manhattan and cultivated a career as a short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian and diplomat. His best known works include Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Following the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, he arrived in Paris to lodge at the age of 38. His building was located next door to French dramatist and novelist Alfred de Musset. He would spend seventeen years abroad continuing his writings until returning to New York in 1832.
President John Tyler would appoint Irving as Minister to Spain in February 1842 following an endorsement from Secretary of State Daniel Webster. Spain was in the midst of political upheaval throughout his four-year term. He returned homesick and suffering from a crippling skin condition.
He resumed his writings and collected numerous honors while living in Sunnyside, New York. He frequently visited Washington D.C. and Mount Vernon for research purposes. He suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 76 on November 28, 1859. Eight months earlier, he had completed the final volume of his biography of George Washington. He would be buried under a simple headstone at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York.

Duke of Wellington: An Occupier As An Assassination Target
มุมมอง 482 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Arthur Wellesley, better known as the first Duke of Wellington proved a permanent obstacle to Napoleon Bonaparte’s conquest ambitions. During the Napoleonic Wars, he led the British and allied forces to victory at the Battle of Vitoria in 1813. During Bonaparte’s exile in 1814, he served as the British Ambassador to France. He returned to battle during Bonaparte’s Hundred Days resurgence in 181...
The Possible Murder of French Writer Emile Zola
มุมมอง 74 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Writer Emile Zola was at the height of his literary fame when he involved himself in France’s Alfred Dreyfus military scandal affair. He was outraged over a sham verdict favorable towards another French officer that he felt was guilty of passing military secrets to the German embassy in Paris. Zola had historically shared an affinity towards the oppressed and in his eyes Dreyfus’s persecution r...
A Week Of Governing Dangerously In Virginia
มุมมอง 27 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
During a single week of February 2019, a succession of embarrassments plagued the Executive Branch of the State of Virginia. The string of calamity began when a photo publicly surfaced from governor Ralph Northam’s 1984 Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook. On one page of the yearbook, an individual (presumably Northam) wore blackface paint and another (unidentified), a Ku Klux Klan outfit....
A Municipal Gothic Revival Architectural Marvel
มุมมอง 109 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
The former Richmond City Hall occupies an entire downtown city block rivaling any municipally designed executive branch within the United States and Europe. Designed by Elijah E. Myers, the trophy Gothic Revival design features a unique symmetrical appearance. The 195-foot clock tower on the left side of the façade gives an impression of asymmetry. The completed masterpiece functioned as Richmo...
The Esteemed Mother of The Father of Our Country

Mary Ball Washington, the mother of George, was an invaluable resource for him during his lifetime. She presided over the family plantation of 276 acres at Ferry Farm until her eldest son came of age. She lived to see George command the Continental Army to independence and become inaugurated as the initial American president in 1789. After learning that he’d been elected president in April 1789...
A Commanding and Surrealistic Downtown Train Depot
มุมมอง 1714 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Located in Shockhoe Bottom at the base of Church Hill, Richmond’s Main Street Amtrak station remains a dominating and towering downtown presence. Its ornate, domed clock turret crowns the depot completed in the Renaissance Revival style in 1901. The Possible Preventable Death of George Washington
มุมมอง 2821 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
One of George Washington’s closest friends might arguably be responsible for inducing his premature death. Medical quackery was at its prolific height and worst throughout his lifetime. Washington was still a vigorous man at the age of 67, only two years removed from the American presidency. On December 12, 1799, he spent the entire day on horseback supervising farm activities. The weather turn...
A Vanished Canal That Once Routed Through Alexandria, Virginia

Following extensive lobbying by local merchants, Congress chartered the Alexandria Canal in 1830. The waterway linked the city with Georgetown and required ten years to fully construct. It opened for service in 1843 enabling canal boats to cross the Potomac River without descending to the river level. Boats would chart their trips downstream via canal on the southwest side of the Potomac until ...
Historic Prostitution Industry Within Paris

Prostitution in Paris has consisted of periods alternating with tolerance and repression. Brothels have historically been an accepted institution, but sometimes a visible target for reformists. The sculpture is entitled La Grisette d...

Along with the question "why", is the "HOW“。 No car was found in vicinity that indicate she'd driven herself there, which begs the qestion "How did she make her way into that location?" Bus? Tax? A ride from somebody? And, was this somebody a relative, a friend, a stranger? And for over 25 years, why nobody came forward to clear up that they had driven her there?

Gunther was always very nice to me, well at least as nice as Gunther ever was. He even protected me from people trying to hit on me in the donut shop. I used to do my homework there after school. One time an older guy was trying to strike up a conversation with me. Gunther was washing the top of the glass case the donuts were kept in. I loudly told the creep that was hitting on me that if he didn't leave me alone, my dad would kick his ass. He said "Oh yeah, who's your dad?" I nodded toward Gunther. He looked at Gunther and Gunther slowly nodded his head. It was hilarious. The creep left me alone after that.

Did Stevens family ever take civil action against Terry Melcher or Dennis Wilson or mamma cass? without them Manson's family's would have never been their. Terry was a puzzy he should have stood up to Manson maybe kicked his ass. Hed been at the house several times envited, cass house lived with Wilson. Id stumped a Mudd hole in his little azz. Convicts like Manson will bully a punk but not a man. Cass was a horrible person with her Canadian drug dealer lover's. One story the Canadian grapes a man with a sex toy at cielo drive , tied to a tree .cass wasn't there in the hospital? but wanted a Polaroid of the assault. Its like celebrities so out spoken about Donald Trump when he became president. Before that they loved him. Does Trump know something bad about these people they are so scared they call him out a liar? Kinda funny if ya ask me. Hollywood is a devils playground . Chrispin Glover hauled azz from there pure evil is what he said

As a child i remember this. My dad a business selling tubes. In those days tvs had tubes. When the tv broke you’d take out the errant tubes and take them to a grocery or drug store with a tube tester with various tubes stored underneath. The owner of the store had these tubes on consignment.. test the tube, if broken buy a tube. I vaguely recall the store. I vividly recall the story as it was big news and my dad sold tubes to Mr zeiller and knew him a little bit

No offense to anyone living here, but this place looks so depressing. The grass is dead and brown. Sidewalks and pavement are overgrown and look like they haven't been redone since the 1970's. The houses look kinda ghetto and have paint chipping off. The trees and shrubbery are mostly ugly. Just looks like a very run down city. Reminds me a bit of my time in Middletown, Ohio. Another run down city. Wishkah river is ugly, too. The little park was kinda cool, but not much there. Downtown looks run down, too.
