I love to ride. Live in Maryland and ride year-round. I started riding late in life and over the last few years I've learned a lot from personal experiences, TH-cam, and info from other riders; I'm definitely eager to share this information with you.
The beasts are my two bikes:
Beast #1 - Venom (named after the marvel comics and movie character) is a 2018 Harley Road Glide Special (Stage 3, 124 ci as of November 2020) with the S&S 124 ci Bigbore Kit, ThunderMax Tuner, Full Rinehart exhaust, RS 468 cam, S&S cam plate, and oil pump and other mods. This one is a monster with ~145 ft-lbs of torque and ~135 hp; not the fastest bike on the road......... but fast enough for me. It easily gets up to 90mph in third gear quickly.
Beast #2 - Carnage is a 2021 Honda Goldwing Tour DCT......The name speaks for itself.......my favorite bike for long trips.....not as fast as my Harley but faster than most Stage 1 and 2, touring bikes on the road. No mods to the engine or tune.

Americade 2024 Road Trip
Several of my fraternity brothers and I traveled to Lake George, NY, for Americade 2024. This was my first trip to Americade and my first visit to Lake George. Had a great time hanging out with my brothers, eating great food, checking out vendors, and test riding the 2024 Road Glide, Road Gilde CVO, and the 2024 Indian Challenger.
Will post videos of rides in the Lake George area and my reviews of the different bikes I rode during Americade.

Was riding from Maryland to Alabama on I-81 and took a quick detour to ride to Big Walker Lookout in Wytheville, VA. Discovered this location when searching for scenic, twisty roads to ride in Virginia. This scenic byway begins at exit 47 of I-77 and ends at exit 52 (I-77) in Bland. Barely twisted the throttle and the 124ci engine was ready to go! Didn't go over 3000 rpm and had plenty of power left, but I normally don't ride faster than I need to......in order to win. The Beast is undefeated at this po...

The Power of the Beast (140 plus ft/lbs of Torque)
Not as famous as the Dragon, but in my opinion much more enjoyable. Thanks for helping me relive some memories.
Love the music and the view 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
1h10min37sec should have overtake the white pick up truck while you had a chance . Anyway, loved the video, epic ride!! Keep riding!!
From a quick look at that segment, he was moving at a nice speed. I normally pass if the vehicle is slowing me down.....I was enjoying the views. That was my first time on the skyway....have rode it two times since then.
That is complete bullshit I've been down the Tail of the Dragon and he was done nothing like it
Not sure if you are trying to be funny or not. Guess you missed the end of the video where I pulled up to the Deal Gap General Store. I ridden the Tail of the Dragon several times.....including twice on this particular day.🤨
You have aftermarket bars?
Yes...those are the Horizon SST bars. Installed them myself. I'm 6'4" and couldn't ride this bike long distances without these bars and my Corbin seat.
pretty high revs
These road are pretty steep in places, and I am in the mountains....not sure what the elevation is for most the route. Also the bike is loaded down with gear, and I weigh 250 lb. Didn't notice any revs higher than usual unless I was riding up a steep stretch of the road.
Nice to just take this in without the gibberish on days when my DCT Tour has to sit in the garage!
Nice to see riders who know how to lean... No music sweeter to my ears than engine sounds. But I know it's hard to record without excessive wind noise. Why do all these darn roads have to have a name? When I say VA16 or PA339 or OH555, my friends know exactly what I'm talking about.
Clear sky days and open highways!!!! Chill vibes only!!!
Dennis looking forward to doing this route again....it was fun!
I have seen bear ?!! that is TRUE!!
Loch Raven is awesome! Prettyboy Dam isn’t too far away from there. I just posted a vid.
We rode through there on this ride. I normally visit both when I'm riding through this area. Very familiar with the roads in your video. Good stuff.
Digging that windshield. Can you share info? THANKS!
That's the F4 customs windshield; the stock windshield didn't repel water well and I didn't like the shape of the stock windshield. The F4 is perfect in my view.
I love to ride that area. 221 S to the Parkway, Boone, Blowing Rock area especially.
Just checked out 221 and just added it to my list. I ridden the Blue Ridge Parkway but not 221.
I stand corrected. I have ridden parts of 221 through VA, heading north toward Roanoke. Great road.
Hey man Nice video. I love the sound of your exhaust. What type do have?
That's the full Rinehart exhaust (Slimline Duals with the 4.5 inch MotoPro45 Slip-On; the RedShift 468 Camshaft also contibutes to the sound. The video audio is okay but the live sound while standing close to the bike or riding is like heaven. In my view, the Rineharts have the best sounding exhaust on the market. The sound is more subdued at higher RPMs which is great for riding long distance.
Thanks, i am going to check out Rinehart.
@@mrmerv3840 One note....not sure what kind of bike you have and if you have.... or plan to add performance upgrades to the engine. If you do plan to do performance upgrades toward the high end (Stage 3 or 4, with 150 plus hp and torque), I would recommend the Khromewerks comparible exhaust. From some other videos I seen and performance shops I've talked to in Maryland, at the higher end of the power spectrum, you will lose a little hp and torque with the Rinehart pipes. Some performance shops, highly recommend Khromewerks or the D&D exhaust for peak performance on Harleys. I made a choice based on sound and not focused on peak performance numbers. My Harley has about 135 hp and 145 ftlbs of torque and that was enough for me, so I have no issues with the Rineharts.
I have a 21 Street glide with a Rinehart header and Street cannons for slip on. I also have the Screaming eagle 462 power cam. I had to protect my warranty. I want the Wood Cam but that will void warrant. I am going to add the DBX 4.5 and see how it sounds. Thanks for the input. You are a cool dude.
@@mrmerv3840 Tracking and understand about the warranty. There are some Harley Dealerships that will do aftermarket cams, and allow you to maintain your warranty but not all dealership do that. The Wood cams are great.
Out all the videos I've seen this was the only one with nearly no one around 😂 .was this during week?
Had to look at the pictures from that day to confirm; this was a Sunday morning after a big rain storm in July last year. There were a few cars on bikes on the road but not many.
@@shurmanandthe_beasts that definitely makes it look more appealing 🤔
Excellent ride and beautiful road 😢
Yes it was. You have to be careful though. It is steeper than it looks and some spots on the road are in rough shape.
Wow! Where’s all that extra noise coming from? It’s like he placed a microphone next to the road surface. Or like he was dragging something.
You have to be joking...the video is dead quiet other than the sound of the bike. Yes the GW is quiet.....you learn to appreciate that more as you get older.
@@shurmanandthe_beasts ok, I stand corrected. Maybe 🤔 I was hearing things. I AM 76 years old, I’ll get a hearing test. 🤣
nice ride....
Thanks ✌️
I got to do this road with one of my bikes on a sunny 🌻 day Kawasaki Vulcan s 650 2918 or Suzuki burgman 400 2023 Kawasaki klx 230 dual sport with a Bluetooth speaker running that song 😅 they got a goldwing 2023 in black n red triming full touring manual in a showroom in my town ❤. 28.700 plus fees . Thinking about trading my 3 bikes for it ? But mines are all paid for 🎉 . I am in Tucson AZ but moving back to east coast ASP i miss the Atlantic ocean 🌊
I love my Goldwing. Without a doubt it is my favorite bike; thought about trading in or selling my Stage III Road Glide for the 2023 CVO but it doesn't have enough power for me. Not planning to spend that much for the CVO and then have to put another $5K in it to make it as fast as my Road Glide. Currently, waiting to see what the 2024 Goldwings look like. When they upgrade the GW console to a bigger screen, I will definitely trade up to that one.
This road is perfect. This ride was during the week, so not much traffic. Would not do it late in the evening or at night, since you are in the middle of no-where. Looking forward to ridng this road again in the fall. My GW is my favorite bike....especially for long trips. Very reliable and they will run forever.
Flew through the Tail on my Multistrada last year (at dawn to avoid traffic, your day looks much more civilized) but thinking of getting a Goldwing so interested to see how you did on these corners. Good video, thanks
My ride was right after a big storm that blew through the area, and it was on a weekday so hardly any traffic. I stared riding late in life and the black Road Glide in some of my videos is my first motorcycle. It is a Stage 3 with ~130hp and ~145 ft-lbs of torque. The Goldwing is my second bike and by far.... it is my favorite bike. The GW is smooth and has all of the power a rider needs in my view. In sports mode the GW is a beast. I spent $15k getting the Harley to match my riding style....no mods were needed for the GW as far as performance goes. The GW is smooth, with barely any wind noise. I'm fairly tall, so I had to change the handlebars and the seat on the GW. The center of balance is low so the GW feels really light at slow speeds and on curves. In my view it almost effortless on curvy roads. I could do most curves with one hand on the handlebars on the GW; I would do that on the Harley with sharp curves. Not familiar with the Multistrada but recommend test riding a GW. I didn't test ride a GW before buying one, and on the ride home it felt like a luxury scooter compared to my Harley Road Glide because it felt so light and easy to maneuver. It took about 2-3 before the scooter feeling went away, but I absolutely love the GW.
Nice! What is your bar set up? Looks really comfortable. I’m coming off a HD Bagger with 12” baby apes. Now I’m on stock 2020 GW dct
Those are the Horizon SST bars. Fairly easy to install. I'm 6'4" with long arms and legs, so the stock bars were too low for me. I can ride all day with the SST bars with no back fatigue.
Is your windshield tinted?
Yes it is. It's the F4 Custom windshield; they have a tinted version.
La bi ayi ciksa 😮
You were intour mode. Do you think it would be more comfortable in economy mode? I find that the less responsive throttle is better on twisties.
I ride in the tour mode 95% of the time. I've used the econ mode a few times, just to check it out but it is not responsive enough for me on twisty roads. My other bike is a performance Harley with a ton of torque, so I'm used to riding bikes with very responsive throttles.
I saw a pucker factor of 10 on a few turns. 😂
No pucker factor on any turns from my skill point of view…but I’ve seen tons of videos of riders and cars coming in the opposite direction crossing the line on blind turns….., so it pays to be cautious and alert to those risks.
This is the way a riding touring video should look. It should feel just like I am riding my own 2003 Wing and travelling that road. No unnecessary talk and no annoying background music....just the music of your exhaust. Well done sir !
Will likely do a mix of videos. Some with music and some without. Understand that some viewers out there, would prefer I not use music, but some rides would be long and boring without some music.
Because of all the sport bikes flying up and down the tail I won't ride it again.
Completely understand. During peak riding season, I would only ride it on a work day or right after a heavy rain storm. Otherwise too many bikes on that road. I did it twice.....that day. So it is not on my list to do it again, unless I had to ride it to get to some other popular road in that area. There are tons of other roads to ride without that much traffic.
Love the videos dude 😎👍 Subbed.
I have a ton of videos to edit and publish. That takes time though.
About to purchase my 2023 Goldwing DCT. Always been my dream bike. 🤗
The 2023 DCTs are sweet. Minor color changes from the 2021s but the changes stand out. Great choice. Just returned from a 1300 mile road trip on my Harley, and believe me I missed my Goldwing. The Goldwing is more quiet, smoother, and less wind noises. Great for long trips.
Very therapeutic 😌
Want to ride that route again in the fall.
😎👍
Awesome video I like looking at the homes that road you gotta keep your eye on the road. Good job.
Mike I like to enjoy the scenery as well but even some of the small “S” curve are like a blind hill where the road suddenly changes direction after the crest. You lose your focus and you could go off a cliff.
This is how you should ride the dragon very well put together what is the name of the track that is going with this video it is real smooth
Joseph thanks…..that track is Cherry Blossom by Steven Beddall. Got it from Artlist.
Nice scenic ride!
Yes it was!
Awesome video love the bike and the way you control it
Mike thanks. Control is easy after many miles on the road with both bikes (Stage 3 Road Glide and this one). Also spend a lot of time practing slow speed drills (U-turns, emergency braking, swerves, and etc.) and riding any twisty road I can find. Additionally, I watch a lot of motorcycle crash videos and try to learn from the mistakes other riders make.
Looks like a great smooth ride!
I enjoyed it..
What a ride just love the sound of that bike that Tennessee view is awesome.
I'm planning to move to North Carolina or Tennessee in the next few years to be closer to those amazing routes.
The big wing sound is a drug that's for sure.
Dang! Now THIS is how to promote a bike. Less blah blah blah and just shut up and ride on an incredible road. Thanks for the Zen.
Not promoting the bike but highlighting some great routes. Will eventually post a video about the upgrades I've made to both bikes to fit me and my riding style.
Sound of Goldwing and birds. ❤ it. Relaxing video! What a beautiful world!
Very nice footage
I have almost 2000 clips of rides in various places on the East coast. I need to find more time to edit.
Great day for a ride. Would you be able to reload without the overlay of music please? As nice as the tunes are, l find the tune of the bike better. Great vid.
Noted!
What kind of handle bars are those
Horizon SST made by Helibars. I'm 6'4" and the stock bars were way too low for me; these are perfect.....easy install.
@@shurmanandthe_beasts thank you for responding back
@@mikemielke2364 No problem. I highly recommend those bars; they provide several adjustments for height and grip placement that work for most riders regardless of height. Install is fairly easy if you take your time and follow the instructions provided and watch videos available online.
Hey Mr Shurman, I'm 6 foot even with a 23 dct. Curious as to the brand and height of the bars? I can only assume they're Heli bars... and aslo did you need to extend any cables? Have they restricted the view of your mirrors? Thanks for the video AND the tunes. Easy like Sunday morning vibes. Keep smiling and safe travels in your journey Sir.
Those are the Horizon SST bars by Helibars. I did the install myself and did not have to extend the cables. The details for the bars state the height increase over stock is 3 inches but I think I have about a ~5 inch height increase over stock. When doing a full lock with the stock bars, my hand were against my leg; with the SST bars, there is at least 8 inches between the grips and my leg. Bike handles better. The bars are perfect. Can ride all day and night with no issues. The view of the mirrors is restricted slightly when my back is against the backrest, but all I need to do to gain full visibility is to lean forward about an inch.....this is not an issue for me. These bars were one of the best upgrades I have made to the bike.
We should experience the ride and the bike not your music. Sorry
Understand your point of view, but I ride and record so that I can watch later. If I'm riding my music is on.....I may occassionally divert it to my helmet if I know the language may be offensive to viewers, but I'm riding for me.
I thought this was the Tail of the dragon 🐉 going backwards. Love the tail of the dragon, even recorded myself riding the tail with my 21 Goldwing . I thought I was loosing my mind. I Rode the tail approximately 20 times. While I was watching your video, I was like, I don’t recognize a damn thing here 😂. Looks like an awesome ride, hopefully I can ride here also in the near future. Nice video
Enjoyed riding both the Tail and the Back of the Dragon but the Back of the Dragon is more scenic and probably has a lot less traffic in my view. Did the Tail twice, going south and then back north. Would do them both again. Want to do the Back of the Dragon in the Fall. Will do Cherohala Skyway next month. I love twisty roads.....My biggest concern on the Tail was someone coming toward me crossing the centerline around a blind curve (I've seen dozens of crash videos), but there was hardly any traffic on the day I rode it. A rain storm had just passed through the area.....I'm sure that helped.
On my third video, look like you in the Maryland area where I am maybe one cross your path one day keep the videos coming

Joe.....lol. Harleys will roll. A lot depends on the rider as well. Bikers in my area that know my bike will find a reason to exit the roadway because they know they can't hang.
@@shurmanandthe_beasts I'm not sure but I was told when I bought the bike at a Harley dealer that it had a stage 2 kit. it also had Dynojet power vision tuner on it. It will roll. I met the guy who owned it before me and he said it scared the shit out of him and he was a good 100lbs heavier than me. I've been tempted to trade it but it runs so damn good I can't let it go.
@@joetroutt7425 Understand. Stage 2 is a remarkable change over a stock harley (20% or more increase in hp and torque) and for most touring harleys it puts you in the ~100 horsepower and ~118 ftlbs of torque range with the 107ci motor. You are probably close to that range with the 103; a lot of bikes on the market and on the road don't do those numbers....especially torque early in the rpm range. M8 engines with a good camshaft and tune will roll.
This. Is. My. Backyard. Great. Riding. In. Western. NC
Dennis that was my first time on the Rattler but some members of the group had ridden it before. Beautiful area and great roads. Will likely return to the area in the near future.
What time of the year you did this ride?
Hugo this was in July 2022.....after a heavy rain storm the day before. Roads were in great condition......there was a small tree that blocked one lane at one point but that was easy to get around. There are a lot of blind turns but not a difficult route in my view.
