PETER LINDBERGH : Master of LIGHT – LEARN His ICONIC Beach Lighting Setup for Portraits
One of the Greatest Photographers of All Time. The genius of Peter Lindbergh.
Peter Lindbergh redefined Model photography, capturing the humanity and vulnerability of his subjects in a way few others could. His work with the supermodels of the 1990s, like Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford, remains as powerful today as it was then.
This video celebrates Lindbergh’s timeless lighting techniques, with a focus on his Beach Tent Lighting setup, a method that allowed him to craft beautifully controlled light even in unpredictable outdoor settings.
Key elements we cover include:
Subtractive lighting (Black Tent): Reducing harsh sunlight for softer tones.
Arri lighting: Adding subtle, constant light to enhance the scene.
Strobe techniques: Bringing dramatic, yet natural contrast.
For me, this was a deeply personal project-Lindbergh’s work has always been a source of inspiration, and it’s been a fun journey to study his techniques in such depth.
I hope this breakdown not only teaches you new skills but also gives you a fresh appreciation for the genius of Peter Lindbergh. Contains Archive Peter Lindbergh footage from various sources.

GODOX pro 400 : STUDIO LIGHT EPIC FAIL - My BAD experience with these lights.

love this
Thank you for this excellent video on Lindbergh’s lightning techniques. I’ve been thinking and wondering about how he did this for at least 25 years. I’ve always been fascinated by his images. And sorry to divert off topic but when Lindbergh started delivering from Nikon Dslr cameras, how did he convert from a color sensor to black and white without color noise? His Dslr images looked just like Tri-x. Thanks again. I watch all of your videos!
Best Lindbergh lighting tutorial on TH-cam 😃🙌🏼
Ha thank you! I am stoked that people are into it so far.
thanks you so much, that is useful for lean difference style。and would you mine tell me how to got so many pictures of he.i want college all of his picture for growing
Please do Mario Testino! 🙏🏼
Ya kno tbh I’m not a big Testino fan so it might be a struggle for me. Let’s see how far I get on the epic list so far 😅
These videos are incredible. Thank you so much for producing them, I am learning so much.
@@elliotwalker4182 that’s brilliant to read, thank u for watching and commenting.
the effort thats gone into this video is MEGA. Well done, i love it!!
@@oliviabossert thank you sm Olivia it’s really appreciated as honestly I spent faaaar too long on this 😅

Thanks 🙏🏻
Yr welcome. Thanks for watching.
This series is amazing! Keep goin!
Thank u sm
I’ve seen pics just as nice under a $60 beach tent hehe
Ofc great photography is rarely about how expensive the gear is! It’s a good point.
I loved watching you on tiktok but have been off tok for about 3 months (not good for my brain) and have missed your videos so much, happy to find you on here - please keep posting! I would love more of a deep dive on how to light with direct flash outdoors - i loved your video on elaine constantine and her method !!
Glad you found me again. And yes I know TikTok rewired my 🧠 😅 Now I’ve figured out how to make outdoor simulations I have more planned!
Are you making these Set.A.Light models available for study?
Lindbergh was one of my favorite photographers. Nice use of Set.A.Light!
@@davidpalermo4695 thanks, none of this was made with set.a.light tho. It doesn’t have the location and outdoor options I needed.
Oh!? What software are you using?
@ this is UE5/TwinMotion
thank you for these nuggets of knowledge and our analysis of his and other photographer's work ! really enjoy each and everyone as they cover the basics of the styles as well as go into details that just make it authentic
@@xaviermurillon7269 thank you. I really do appreciate it, this was an enjoyable one to make for sure.
Found you on tiktok awhile back. So glad you’re here at YT. Your content is absolute gold to me.
Ah that’s really good to hear thank u for watching

Was hoping you'd upload something today! thanks!! :)
thanks for watching, currently working on a few more, they take me so long tho 🥲
brilliant!
thank you, hope it was useful!
Can you use these techniques outdoors?
@@lilslugger98 hmm yes and no. You need quite a lot of light to overpower daylight but you could use additional lights around the model and daylight as main. It’s sort of hard to describe without visuals
You articulated your point well. So mixed lighting (anything but keylight if it's not the sun)
love your videos!! thank you
thank you for saying this, its great to know
you are the best
ha thanks, just doing what I can do help!
Im growing a lot as a professional photographer with your videos. Thank you!!!
That’s so rad. Thank u for watching!
@@easystudiolighting do u think it is necessary to use a external photometer ?
Absolute legend for creating this tutorial!
Hope it’s useful for you 💻✍🏻
Love it
I bought my very first light and its a godox ad400 pro. Wish I knew about this earlier. Could you do a video on the lights you recommend purchasing when you start acquiring equipment ? It would be really useful.
Yes I will be making this, and I also am setting up an Amazon storefront which will have favourite equipment etc
Thanks for doing these.
no problem, they are fun to make!
This particular video is a master class. It's really helpful to see what you are doing as the solo lights, makes it crystal clear in my mind. And awesome teaching move to lock the lights to the circle!! Bravo
@@jcccheung thank you so much. That’s a really encouraging comment to receive!
lovely to learn from you! would love to work with u one day
thanks, I am glad you like it!
Would you do an analysis on Jeremy Soma´s style of lighting and editing? He´s one of my favorite photographers and I´d like to undertand his technique even better, and I know you´re quite good with this sort of things, so I´d be happy to see you analyze his style any time soon
Your tutorials ROCK. Thanks for all you do.
@@jackdixon-gunn385 ah that’s kind. Thanks for watching !
Hey, love the videos, do you use set.a.light as part of your pre-production planning for a shoot or just to illustrate lighting setups? I've used it on and off but haven't bought a license, unsure as to whether its worth it and viable as a tool for planning shoots. Thank you!
hi, yeah tbh I rate it a lot. Ive used it for commercial clients, and it really helps, esp with basic set plans and developing kit lists. Ive also found it really accurate if you know the studio dimensions you are working at.
i love your videos so much I could watch them all day long thank you!
@@miateresa365 that’s so kind thank you sm
amazing. does photoshop have a similar function?
I stumbled upon your channel yesterday and I’ve been binging it. This is the quality of content I’ve been missing.
@@SixSpeedSeven appreciated! Glad you are here.
Would it make a difference to do this same setup with profoto strobes vs aputure constant lights?
this shoot is INSANE and it literally was everywhere this week
Amazing content man, (@victor_boccard there), I can’t find the link to the app « satellite » you’re talking about. If you can help !
Thank you so much for your knowledge ! as a starting photographer, passionate about light this is gold.
Am so happy to read this, thank you
Great channel. One of the very few that breaks down lighting in a clear concise way. Thank you sir. Could you please do Thibaut Grevet's lighting ?
MORE OF THIS CONTENT PLEASEE - so helpful <3

Golden hour is a Light Hack
another instructive video... thank you
Thank you for sharing for those of us not on Tik Tok (maybe a lot more soon if the current law holds- which it seems it will!) Probably better visually NOT to have the 2 vertical feeds- it is IMHO a bit distracting to the eye (especially with Pavarotti's colors of course!) - a single feed - even though it does not fill the frame- would be visually clearer...
Thank you for the considerate feedback I was really wondering on this also! I’ll add a single version today and see how it goes. Genuine thanks!
